I’d have been excited tbh and certainly would have expected a good quality car based on the advert I’ve seen. “Not the actual one (he crashed) - this has fewer dents and complimentary clubs in the back”.

I wouldn’t even want to take delivery of the car being offered, sounds an expensive (for you) nightmare - let them keep it in their car park, phone webuyanycar and get it sold - book a weekend away.
Sensible strategy, and also without resorting to insulting the OP like a some people have. If I couldn't get it insured, I think this is what I'd do, too. It's a couple of grand in the pocket maybe, so better than nothing.

I don't think there's much ground for complaint to PP on this given the wording and presentation of the compeition, and given the public image that they like to present in all their marketing activities, but I don't think some people giving abuse to Soup Dragon is necessary given he's been perfectly polite to everyone posting in the thread, even if he doesn't agree with them.
Thanks and also, the insults haven't been too bad considering the thread title and the inevitable issue of a lengthy thread not being completely read through.

Really pleased with everyones contributions, its been helpful, useful and it would be quite foolish to only think of my own point of view while dismissing those that don't agree. The fact is - I'm a bit unsure about the whole thing if I'm honest.

OP, I just read the Ts & Cs posted above and you're screwed as far as trying to say it's wrongly advertised as a 2009. It clearly states it's a 2003, but...

you should have mentioned in your e-mail that you have found insurance for 2006-2009 Escalades, but that nobody will insure a 2003.

How much does it weigh? 2.5 tons? That's got to be worth a couple of hundred in scrap, collected from your driveway.

Don't forget to complain if the clubs are just loose in the back, and not in a bag smile
What are you saying here - there isn't a caddy in the boot to carry the clubs for me? That's outrageous!

I agree. Very few people read t’s & c’s.
But they’re also the people who look a bit silly when they start getting upset after people point the truth out.

PP are not a small company. They know what they’re doing. They’ve got plenty of previous for dubious prizes.

I’m not having a go at anyone - I think it’s funny. I probably would have looked through it in depth before I started throwing my toys out of my pram and sending emails to Paddy Power.

OP should make light of the situation - it’s cost nothing, it’s worth something.

I’d love to see what PP say back.
Bang on Pidsy - I am trying to make light of it. Yesterday (quite a few pages back) I described how excited I was to be getting the car today as I know my kids are really excited about it too - only to discover I can't insure the thing. That was sort of like a 2nd kick in the balls knowing that ok, its not as new as I had originally thought, but I'll still be able to have a bit of fun with the prize at least. But no. Can't do that either! Its just a matter of expectation v reality for me.

Will be interesting to see what happens next but you are right - if I let myself get upset over something like this then I deserve a kick in the balls smile I'm definitely not upset or emotional about it.

Do this:

Take the car.

List it on an eBay auction, 99p start, no reserve.

Don't fluff it up, just list "2003 Escalade, colour, engine size, MOT until XX, buyer to pay and collect within X days of auction end"

Let the auction run to the end (unless someone offers you £30k hehe)

Report back.
Might just end up doing that. Couple of other suggestions in the thread too, definitely weighing up all options right now.

By strange co-incidence - by creating this thread I've already got myself quite a large 'watch list' if I do end up listing it on ebay* biggrin

  • this is entirely co-incidental and I did not create this thread to try and create traffic to my upcoming advert (T's and C's apply smile )

All those individuals exercise a choice. Do you feel the same about distillers and brewers? Road builders and car manufacturers? Where do you draw the line?
Not quite the same though. Brewers don't send out free samples of their product to alcoholics who've not bought anything for a while.

Shambles isn't it.

Soupdragon, if they had put 'for illustration purposes only' at the bottom of the promo pic would you still expect a 2009 model?
The problem with this is the Escalade is not very familiar on these shores, so to many people, including most car enthusiasts, an Escalade is just an Escalade, no matter what generation/year it is. I suspect PP fell into this category and didn't realise or think anyone would know any better. So while I can see why people are calling out the OP for being ungrateful, flip it around and say the competition was to "win a BMW like XYZ celebrity drove/stole/crashed", then put up a computer generated image of something looking like an F20 M3, only for the winner to be told they were actually winning a ropey old E46 320i with a dodgy bodykit, I suspect more people would be sympathetic.
I hadn't a clue either. I just seen the ad and obviously, a big yank tank that Tiger Woods chooses to drive is obviously worth a few bob so lets have a punt.

Next thing I know, my phone bleeps and I get a link to the prize draw - low and behold, I've won a £30k car. Happy days! Put the link of the prize draw and the image of the car in the advert on WhatsApp to share the good news. Later on, you wonder what its going to be like. Google Tiger Woods Cadillac Escalade and things like that and considering Tigers car matches the one in the ad - that's what I think I've won.

I ask them for the car details within a couple of days of winning so I could get insurance quotes (so that was last month) and finally, I only get the details on Monday 19th Aug, nearly 4 weeks after I asked for them. Only then do I find out what I've really won. That alone makes me scratch my head. The car comes in 2 days and I've limited time to find insurance (which I still can't find) and its not the prize I thought I was getting.

Anyway, sounds like I'm whining now - I'm not - just trying to describe the chain of events from my perspective smile

If I could insure it, I would drive it no question.

I've never had a V8 before so that is obviously something that would be good fun to have for the 1st time.

My plan was to tax and insure it, put it up for sale but to put a few miles on it while I wait for a buyer.

I'm going to have to think differently now but if the car is SORN, that's going to limit the catchment of buyers even further. Most would want to drive it before buying it so that makes things a little more awkward.

Would be an ideal caravan towing car, could maybe sell it to some caravanning enthusiasts, lots of them in Ireland, isn't there? wink

Plus they likely wont worry about little details like insurance etc... whistle
Very good! Although while you jest, it has got me thinking. Might be possible/easier to get insurance in the Republic of Ireland than in Northern Ireland - and I could possibly advertise it for sale there. Someone also mentioned exchange rates in favour for someone buying in Euros....hmmmnnn….something worth exploring.

I'm not 100% sure however it's the only one of a very small number that sold in the UK and the only one I found that has the same style wheels and also happens to be 2003. If it is the one the reg even nearly spells "Lucky" LU03 KVY jester
Changed my mind, I don't want it anymore. Being owned by the mob was cool but being owned by someone who writes like this is not..
Relisted coz of couple of time wasters.
price reduced for quick sale.

reg no is LU03 KVY as few ppl asked.

24" alloys.
Very clean through out.
Electric leather heated memory seats.
7 seater.
Very spacious.
Turns the heads around.
Sounds good drives smooth.
61000 kms done.
Mot till feb 2019
american muscle imported from japan.

Air con would need re gasing.
Rear parking sensors stopped working.
So many posts, can't reply to all but my God, you guys are good. Yes, this is the car I won.

Top sleuthing once again.

PP have serviced it, fixed the aircon, order parts from America, fitted them, valeted it all in getting it ready. Top marks for doing all that by the way - I just need to find a way to get it insured.

As mentioned earlier, plan was to tax it, insure it, advertise for sale but drive it while awaiting for a buyer. Still would like to find a way to do that but struggling.

I'll certainly cut a good deal if anyone on here wants it. When I see that pic (thanks to whoever found it 1st) it looks a lot better than a typical mk2 car. If you Google 2003 Cadillac escalade they dont look anywhere near as good as this one. Alloys make a big difference I guess.

Suggestions of a possible insurance co. are welcome.

After 2nd look, the alloys are upgraded, front lights, rear lights, grill, door mirrors - all upgraded. I'm now wondering if the interior has had a stereo mod or any mods under the hood.

Christ...the emotion of the last 2 days....brilliant car, st car to now, funding out it actually isn't st, it seems to have been a labour of love for the previous owner....kind of sexy in a way looking at that pic.

But still cant insure it .....aaarrgghhh!

Could the OP go and get an independent valuation done, take that to them and ask where they got the figure of £30k from as well?

I didn't see in the T&Cs that it stated the details of the car and that it wasn't worth £30k as they're implying that a 2003 Escalade is worth that.

All seems really off. Been an interesting thread this one. smile
The PH team have found the actual car and with an 8995 asking price so we're right on the ballpark of true value now.

It's been interesting thread for me too as well as really helpful. Seeing the actual 1st pics of the car I won for the 1st time on PH isn't something I was expecting - how on earth did that happen!!?? You guys seen it before I did!

I'm all excited again!

Look up the definition of ungrateful it would direct to this thread.

Free competition, throw away comment 30k (could be worth that who knows not even turned up yet).

For me it just smacks of pure greed, doesn't want the car just wants 30k, I don't think PP has done anything wrong just someone ungrateful won it.
To balance off the ying and yang of the thread, it's important for me to acknowledge that there is an element of me pushing for more despite winning a free to enter competition. I cant deny I've come across like that.

I've also said I'm level headed and not got emotional about it. That's probably wrong - I have been a bit emotional about it. Its been quite a rollercoaster looking back over the last couple of days.

The fact they've went ahead and fixed it all up and valeted etc is pretty cool too. I just need to forget about the 30k dream and just remind myself I've won a cool motor which didn't cost a penny to enter - that's awesome!

That's where my heads at right now. Back to feeling good and those pics from earlier have cheared me up no end - thanks for that!

It was never advertised as a £30k prize, that was a throwaway comment after the draw had been made. Neither the advertising, nor the T+C's, made any comment as to the value of the vehicle. Aside from 1 computer generated image, which incorrectly used a mk3 instead of a mk2 car, the prize was clearly shown from the start. It would take a proper anorak to notice the differences between the mk2 and mk3 anyway, I suspect 90% of PH couldn't even tell you which was which if shown a photo of just 1 car, let alone the general population.

What really happened was the OP bragged to all his family and mates that he had won a £30k 2009 Cadillac. When he found out what he had won, in order to save face with his friends, and to try and get something of higher value he created this thread, contacted the ASA, and sent snotty, legal sounding, emails to Paddy Power while being roasted by 26 pages of posts who think he's a greedy bd who had time to google the exact make, model, and age of car Tiger Woods was driving, but not enough time to read 5 lines of T+C's for the competition he won.

Edited by Condi on Wednesday 21st August 19:47
Condi, some of that is right. Literally over 100 people either friends family and work are asking me when I'm getting my flashy motor. I'm not going to lie, I am embarrassed about that. I can handle that though, just a slightly bruised ego!

If the only time £30k was seen or mentioned was an off the cuff remark whilst the draw was being made, I can't see how you have a claim to 30 grand.

If the original advertisings said it then you can argue you only entered because it was worth that. You clearly can't do that here, you'd already entered.

if they used a pic of a slightly newer model then they should give you one of those. Given its presumably an error I think they should give you the one you have, and the cash difference to what a newer one could have been. Whats the difference value wise between yours and the cheapest one of the upgraded model?
I would say maybe £10k difference roughly.

Giving PP the benefit of the doubt, probably just internal comms a bit out of whack or something which is where the 30k came from. It is an unusual car after all so I can understand fully that side of the coin.
