Into the world of bangernomics I go...
Discussion
Nice work!
I recently went back to bangers from my 330ci ( wanted a van for bike trackdays so spent all the money on that )
I bought a p plate polo and in 9 weeks I've done nearly 3500 miles in it... It's awesome and crap all at the same time it's already payed for itself being so much cheaper to insure and run. Keep looking at classifieds though as I would really like something better.....

I think its about time I posted in this thread as I am an avid follower of Bangernomics. I do over 10000 miles a year to work and back and I flat blank refuse to spend big money on a car. Since venturing into bangernomics I've had the pleasure of owning the following:
- Renault Clio 1.4 Maxim, not a bad car, kept this one well over a year. Cost was free from a family member but eventually one of the CV joints failed in a big way and It went to scrap.
- Fiat Punto 1.9D (non turbo), pretty hateful car but it worked. 5 doors but usual fiat fault of power steering not working. Still returned over 50mpg and I kept it for the best part of 8 months before it refused to turn over. I changed the alternator and battery but it was having non of it. Paid 525, scrapped for 180.
- Peugeot 206 1.9D (non turbo), didn't last very long. Bought off ebay for 450, lasted 4 months until the day of its MOT it refused to start. Garaged diagnosed fuel pump. I diagnosed the scrap yard. Got 200 back.
This brings me to my latest conquest.....A 1994 Nissan Micra 1.0 Petrol. It is awesome. (awesomely bad!). 215 from a guy at work. Underpowered, battleship grey, windy windows, tape player, non-intermittant wipers, single speed heater and no power steering. As basic as basic can be. So far I've put 6000 miles on her and she seems to be going strong, its also quite light and checkable if your feeling brave. Once on the motorway she will sit at 85 all day long and return a good 50mpg. Despite these relative plus points I still find myself looking at ebay for V6 beasties....it can't be that bad on fuel...right?

Well the little Agila is earning its keep!
Everything works. Well, the drivers electric window needs some coaxing to work sometimes. A couple of times I've had to leave the window down overnight because it wouldn't come back up again. Think it's the switch. It works perfectly most of the time. Seems to be worse in the hot weather.
Aircon works nicely, BUT, you have to rely on wind power for propulsion if you use it.
Engine sounds, um, interesting. But every other corsa with the same engine sounds the same after they get a few miles on, so I don't think I'm overly worried. Oil remaining a golden colour, but it is using some water. Think I may have a slight leak somewhere! Not going to look into it unless it starts drinking loads, or other HGF symptoms come to light.
Other than that it's doing all right! Will do 0.9 leptons and maintain it ok, but it does feel a little scary. It's VERY easily affected by wind.
Off to see a nice 75 up for £550 today, so we'll see what comes of that. Might end up with my own minifleet!

Well the 75 was a dog.
The little Agila has had its first problem today though. Went to unlock it but the barrel just span round without catching. Tried to pull the key out to go and use the other lock on the passengers door... Key won't come out, stuck fast, tried pliers and big beefy blokes. Didn't work. Got the end of the key (rubber bit) off so the immobiliser chip isn't. With the key which is currently protruding from the drivers lock,
Have had the door card off, and can loosen the barrel but can't seem to get it out

I thought I was doing well by couriering in a £400 van with 210,000miles on the clock (I've done 75,000 of them).
£50 is an epic purchase. I'd have been tempted to scrap it straight away and get something more expensive, but your mum's friend would probably have been upset.
I bought it because I needed something quick! Seems silly to scrap while it's still got ticket.£50 is an epic purchase. I'd have been tempted to scrap it straight away and get something more expensive, but your mum's friend would probably have been upset.

You're right. You have cash in the bank come MOT time . If it passes - more almost free motoring . If it fails - carcashback value-£50 . You can't lose.Bangernomics rules OK !

Cost me £250 from a family member.
It's got a dent on the wing which was done about three years ago, which makes the drivers door squeak every time you open it.
I know it's not very 'PH' but there does seem to be a bangernomics following on here
I'm loving it. If you have any column switch issues I have a brand new set you can have. It's got a dent on the wing which was done about three years ago, which makes the drivers door squeak every time you open it.

1) It's definately PH.
2) The wing adds to the effect. Get one from a scrapper in the wrong colour for the maximum effect.
3) That family member is a bit "tight". We have a tradition of giving and receiving free cars in our family. Saves the hassle of selling them/scrapping them/offering a 'family warranty'.
Sister in Law gave my wife her first car Suzuki SC100, my dad gave my sister her first car Seirra Estate, my wife gave her friend a mini 850, my father in law gave me a 27K mile mk3 cavalier (which I've had 12 years, and in last 4 years have offered to 2 nephews, and 1 neice, but hey it's not cool). My Sister gave the sierra to a family in her church.
^^ Bit late, that one's gone to the big scrapyard in the sky. Out of interest, you didn't used to be on MK3OC did you?
Anyway. I have fixed the key / lock issue with a hammer and lots of WD40. I also found a cobra alarm fob in the glovebox. Put a battery in but it didn't do anything. Spent two minutes googling how to reprogram it to the car and I have working Remote Central Locking! The keyring bit of it is broken too, so it's attached to my keyring with a rubber band.
But hey... means I don't have to use the dicky door lock.
Bangering at its best, this is.

If the lock was playing up, I'd not bother locking it!
I've got a 2001 D4D toyota avensis. Was £350.
Electric windows all round, remote locking, climate control....
Everything works bar the rear wiper which kept blowing the wiper fuse, so I unplugged it.
The lock problem wasn't evident until it grabbed by key and wouldn't give it back! It's taken 3 days and various techniques to get the key out of the lock barrel.I've got a 2001 D4D toyota avensis. Was £350.

Might as well use RCL while I've got it - and if all else fails I can unlock the passenger door and shuffle across.

having written off 3 mk3 astras (astri?) in 8 years I may have been their once or twice.
These days it's Mx5nutz for the MX5 and mk3cav.com for the cavalier
Thought I recognised your posting style. I remember you posting something about Lagunas on there too, but I can't recall the details! These days it's Mx5nutz for the MX5 and mk3cav.com for the cavalier

Scarey that I have a style. I think it might have been one about the mk2 astra. the place I worked had a laguna pool car, and I may have posted about following what looked like a mk2 astra merit (apart from some very subtle mods like an XE) onto the motorway, me struggling to keep it in sight in this gutless but comfortable laguna.
