Just thought I'd ask if the Insignia is still running?
She hasn’t killed it
Might have done now tho........................

"Apparently it's "rattling it's tits off" and "loses power" on a regular basis

It failed to proceed 12 miles from home and 4th emergency service came to the rescue - the garage it was recovered to thinks the cambelt timing is out.........

Second opinion will be provided when I get hold of it - I'm getting mixed messages on what is wrong with it

It was serviced in May (not by me) which was a surprise (both the fact she got it serviced and I didn't get asked to do it)

Oh no, on the plus side it shows you're getting through to her. Check the tensioner.

Yes first port of call will be cam belt and tensioner and probably a look at the top end to see if the rattles are toppy or bottomy

With a bit of luck it'll be on my driveway this evening and I can have a look at the weekend.

Revised Plan - garage mumbled stuff about possible cam belt a tooth or two out yikes it's an interference engine so that wouldn't be good so - they quoted her unhappy and said £450 to do belt, water pump tensioners and idler but wouldn't give a guarantee that it would stop the engine noise (To be fair I wouldn't either) it definitely sounds top endy but then again a big end failure resulting in a piston contacting the heat would sound top endy.......

Drop the Oil and Filter and see if that tells me anything - if we have Gary Glitter in the oil then game over (I'd rather find another lump and throw that in the hole than get involved in full engine strip down, block and oilway clean plus crank regrinds)

If the engine doesn't "wanna be in my gang" then I'll look at belt timing

If the timing is out - gates kit for the engine is £200 and they job isn't too bad (it was done before purchase - 30K miles ago) and to my simple mind there would have to be a reason why the belt has jumped a tooth or two and I'd like to find that before belt replacement. So I'll be looking for play in tensioner, Idler wheels and water pump as well as camshaft drive (apparently these can get wobbly)

If timing is OK then I'll take the valve cover off and see if it's got any broken or damaged rockers

Weather forecast doesn't look too bad for a day working on the drive - cool but sunny with 3% chance of rain

Of course it means I'm not going to finish my insulation project (under the ground floor) but hey ho that's the way the cookie crumbles

Thanks annoyingly the insignia issues means NN is missing college course time and I need to resolve it's issues quickly.

Up to a few weeks ago I had a nice little 1.4 diesel 307 with MOT (must update that thread) she could have borrowed if I hadn't sold it.....

Oil is of course as black as a cat but no glitter so a good sign - just need to get the filter out and check that

Daughter in law bought a 62 reg "eco" diesel model about six years ago for 6k on 60,000 miles.

Now worth bugger all, but at 150,000 miles it just goes on and on, it's been a great buy and sips fuel.

Spent very little on it other than routine stuff, brake linings etc, although she had the cambelt changed to be on the safe side around 120,000 miles.

Averaged out around £20.00 a week plus running costs and still going strong.

Even better the filter is clean as a whistle - not a trace of anything that glitters or even bearing white metal

Plot thickens - garage that looked at the car said cam timing had jumped - arch liner I had to take an angle grinder to the fixings….. needs to be removed to access bottom pulley to remove vibration damper and see crank timing mark….. hmmm

Well having turned it over a few times

The only timing that looks out is the fuel pump and I’m not sure that matters on a cdti

Have you identified a top end rattle or does it seem lower down in the engine?

Pretty sure it’s top end now and not a piston tapping the cyl head

Going to get a belt timing kit to make 100% sure it’s timed up correctly - if it is then I’ll pull the cam box off and see what’s going on in there

Sorry missed this post on a phone

I think generally they aren't bad cars (cheap for what you get metal wise) cheap tax, economical for the size of the car, roomy inside (not exactly a quality interior but it's functional)

Mileage on this one is 135,000 and it had a cam belt when purchased (writing is still readable on the back of the belt and it runs the waterpump with the back side of the belt so I'd say with some confidence that the parts in the boot we were shown as evidence of water pump and timing belt change were genuine evidence of a change.)

From what I've heard they're always in need of fettleing but of what a car to have in the garage.

Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious biggrin - having said that it's actually never failed to get me where I wanted to go or home but a memorable trip back from Le Man Classic at 55 mph max speed wasn't the finest end to a long weekend.......

Coil Pack decided it had had enough of providing sparks under load to 2 cylinders and left me with 2 functioning ones providing sparks to 4 out of 6.

Anyway not a thread for that car and it's currently partially broken and waiting fixing - the fuel lines decided they don't like ethanol in Shell or BP fuel much so are letting valuable gogo juice escape without protest and the turbo seals have had enough of sealing so when it does get fuel to the engine it smokes more than I do......
