I went to look at a Fiat 126 this morning, I've had various dealings with the seller both buying, selling and swapping.

The plan was to swap my Lada estate for it but when I went to see the Fiat and actually sat inside it I started to have second thoughts, I spent the afternoon mulling over what to do and someone else swooped in and bought it before I had made up my mind. I've now listed my Riva for sale on a retro blue forum and a generic beige car forum so I'll see what happens...
The 126 owner also had a brilliant collection of cars helping to bring down house values in his neighbourhood...

Here's the wiki link for the film, looks like it might be out for release in April 2020.
It's certainly a film I would go to watch especially now with the PH links.
Top drawer as Geoffrey would say. Excellent thread!
Check out another film called "Our Ladies" which is going to be out at the same time. I had a bunch of cars in that. It's certainly a film I would go to watch especially now with the PH links.

A little bit more progress on the Chevette.

Lots of difficult to make time consuming shapes.
Also got the 305 running nicely.

I replaced the fuel filter housing, reconnected the coolant pipes to the housing, fitted a clear fuel line and bled the air of the system and now the car starts instantly and idles smoothly. Also changed the belt which was a little bit worn and now it has stopped squealing.

I went out to look at an automatic car this afternoon, I was unsure about it after the initial test drive because of the lack of leg room compared to a standard manual one but the seller knocked a few hundred off the price so I ended up just buying it.

It drives quite well, a lot better than the other Chevette and isn't too uncomfortable, it's got a wider transmission tunnel which makes it a little bit awkward if you have big feet and want to fit the left foot beside the brake pedal - there isn't a lot of room there.

Love the recent cream 305, it would look ace with the 205 GTI wheels that came with the Berlingo...
I sold them already, I prefer running 14" wheels on these old cars without power steering for a more comfortable ride and easier to steer. I'd prefer a set of 1.6 gti pepperpots than the 15" speedlines.Fermit and Sexy Sarah said:

Yeah, it looks higher than the other one anyway, how do I get the thread into legendary threads?

Thanks for the kind words, I'm trying to keep my youtube channel updated along with some of the stuff I'm writing about on here. I just put a video up of the automatic Chevette.Today I said goodbye to a Corolla I bought a year ago.

I've lent it to my cousin who is a couple of years older than me but has only recently started driving lessons and has chosen to drive automatics instead of learning to drive a manual. The mot expires in a month so I've said she can have the car until the mot expires and I'll take it back, mot it and if she wants to keep it she can buy it or if she doesn't want it I'll have it back.
It's been a decent and reliable car over the last year or so and should be decent enough for a learner driver to wreck/learn in.

I also sold the Peugeot van today, it had been difficult to start and hunting at idle, initially I was thinking glow plugs with the cold starting but yesterday when out in it, it started hunting quite badly then losing power and eventually just conked out when I pulled into a petrol station.
It would briefly fire for a few seconds then die.
A random passerby helped us push it onto the forecourt then I used the starter and left it in first gear to make my way towards a free pump.
I was confident I had either run out of fuel or there was so much air in the system it was just refusing to start so I filled half of the tank with diesel.
I found the priming pump next to the fuel filer housing, I pumped it a few times until it started to feel a little bit stiffer to push, I couldn't seem to see a bleed screw so just popped one of the hoses off coming out of the filter housing and a load of air came out followed by some diesel.
I reconnected the hose and the engine started fine.
This morning the van started instantly meaning the difficult starting was just air in the system. I chucked it up on gumtree and within an hour of placing the advert it was sold.
Tomorrow I'm going out to buy another red automatic Corolla...

Interesting thread, thank you for showing your collection and your endeavours. I do see the point of salvaging vintage peugeot, mercedes, saab, citroen etc. But honestly the early Tata, Ladas, scodas etc is just a waste of energy imho.
Nothing is a waste of energy if you get enjoyment out of it. I really quite liked the tata pickups, I'd have another one. These days old Ladas and Skodas are worth something so I can see the point in preserving them.

Sir, your approach is awesome.
As are you welding and photography skills!
I’ll enjoy this thread for months to come.
Thanks, I was having a discussion with a couple of workmates about cars and they admired my approach but could never actually do what I do, I think mostly out of vanity or worrying what people think. As are you welding and photography skills!
I’ll enjoy this thread for months to come.
One of them has a new audi tt either on finance or bought with a loan, it's quite a nice looking car if you're into that kinda thing but he now has very little spare cash and no savings. I imagine people look at him in his audi and think wow, he's made it in life and living the dream and they look at me in my old boxy cars and think I'm failing at life and poor but in actual fact I could afford to go out and buy an audi tt with cash if I so desired.
I just don't really like the look of new cars and see them as a waste of money. The only new car I like the look of at the moment is the new suzuki jimny...
As for my photography skills, I used to do a piece in retro cars magazine about classic car graveyards, it ran for about a year or so. I do enjoy learning how to use a camera which I've learned myself over the years through practice, I've never been on a course.
The welding on the other hand I learnt at college then went on to do a welding apprenticeship and currently I'm working as a time served welder.
Welding on cars is totally different to the kind of things I'm doing at work so I'm still learning along the way.

I haven't done any serious car welding since the late 70s and back then it was all oxy-acetylene. Depending where the patch was going I'd braze as often as weld it.
Nowadays I'm told that's a no-no and everything has to be MIG. Does anyone know if that's true?
I have access to a MIG welder, but I've never really done much. I've done loads of pipe welding and structural stuff; even pressure vessels, so I'm fine with TIG and MMA and I've been talking about going halfers with my mate on a small oxy-acetylene rig (we share a garage and tools already) but if I'm not allowed to use it for patching I don't see much point. Will I just have to bite the bullet and learn MIG at my advanced age and general decrepitude?

He's got a Facebook page where he does a lot of advertising.

It's not a very good tool for advertising, my lada advert has reached over 100k people but hasn't had a bit of interest.Same username
Mostly I just advertise on the places I'm buying them from such as ebay, Facebook marketplace, gumtree, car and classic, and various forums, if I'm buying from these places then so must other people.
I think people have issues selling cars because of the types of cars they are selling and the type of person they attract.
I'm selling to mainly enthusiasts who know a thing or two about old cars, I usually have a good filter from the first message as to whether the person is likely to turn up and buy the car.
Looking back through last years cars a lot of them were sold on retro car Facebook groups, a few of the higher value ones through car and classic, I don't think I sold any through forums and I sold a few on gumtree.

Fantastic thread. Loved the early comment about only space for 16 cars !
Acquiring all these motors obviously takes a fair effort. I can only imagine the hassle of selling though. From personal experience and all the threads on PH, private selling can be a huge pita. Let alone some people who want to mess you about, sometimes even well intentioned plans go astray. I'd lose patience tbh. Keep up the great work.
Selling can test my patience at times but as long as I'm not in a position that I need to sell a car I can afford to wait a while for the right buyer to appear.Acquiring all these motors obviously takes a fair effort. I do sometimes choose who to sell to, I can usually sense if someone is going to be a tt.
I see a few people from here are joining the retroste Facebook group, I wouldn't bother, there's very little activity on it even with over 1k members.
There's also a page with over 10k followers but I'm not really bothered if people choose to follow it or not.

It was really just the double standards, I've seen various other threads on here which mention the point in the thread was to create YouTube content and then I've seen people like yourself bending the rules and posting links to the OP's channel but when I made a mention of YouTube recently without posting links my post gets edited by admins.RR as FOAD you will know it's all about the cars - ie no politics etc

I know I have been warned in the past about posting links which I have stopped doing.
I have a website which most of the content I've posted on here is on but I've never made any mention of that until now, I've put a lot of effort in here writing about my experiences and sharing my photos.
I didn't even bring up the topic of social media but somebody asked and I thought an honest answer would be best.
