The struts will need to be removed, the rust removed and new plates welded (I think), the 'misting' on the strut assessed and the 'visit workshop' display diagnosed through STAR.
Oddly enough, there's a thread about what looks like the exact same thing on the MBclub site.
IIRC it's caused by blocked drainage holes and the fella had a quote for £400 of welding.

Nuts... I visited the indy today and was told that the E500 isn't going to go in for welding work until Friday -- basically, no likelihood of Magnus being ready in time for the holiday for France. At the same time, Grayson is in today for an MOT and a diff fluid change -- additionally, they're going to look at the door lock.
If Grayson is ready, then it's time to see what the big lad is like on a two thousand five hundred mile trip, clockwise, around France and Switzerland! The average speeds'll be lower, that's for certain. Should we make it across the channel and back, it may be time for me to consider my future with Magnus -- it'll be some lucky bugger that takes stewardship (it's old enough to hold enthusiasts' status now), that's for certain.

Blimey - that's a surprising twist after all the titivating, your RR experience to date hasn't exactly been without its foibles!Sorry to hear about the unexpected rust issues - at least you have the RR to fill in, running two old cars for redunancy purposes does in my experience often pay off.
Sad that you've fallen out of love with it a bit due to this, but looking on the brightside, there must be something out there that you fancy fettling for a few years....

It's just backside covering... "I didn't inspect a lot of the underside as the undertrays obscured my view".
But they're normally excellent and thorough. DVSA said:
In respect of undertrays, these are common fitment, particularly on diesels, and can't therefore be considered 'a peculiarity of the vehicle identified during the inspection' as maybe they once were. The fact that they may prevent a proper inspection of certain items is no more relevant that the fitment of interior trim or carpet. If a vehicle has been modified, for example as a track day car, and has undershields such as a sump guard or fuel tank shield which are not standard, then it would be logical to advise on their fitment.
I'd say your tester is being thorough, but outdated.Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
