Volvo V70 cab looks slightly awkward at the rear of the roof IMO.

What do others think?

The Audi one is really neat.

I also like the short, more rounded style soft tops, like a TT convertible or z3?

I prefer the Audi roofline, but I like the Saab's more upright and curved screen. To me, it's just raked enough to look like a 1930s roadster (when standard cars' screens were fully upright) whereas the Audi's is too close to looking 21st Century.

Can't think of much more save a 3 series cabrio but to be honest I think that's the same as the Audi more or less (E36 onwards, E30 looks way too 80s with the quarterlights).

Beetle Cabrio?

The Audi is still one of the more beautiful and well balanced designs they've made IMO. Nice rake to the screen and a very good looking hood when up.

The roof is electric, but i'm pretty certain you could make it manual by disconnecting a few things biggrin

The more of them off the road the better.

So, just to clarify, this thread has been running since July 2013 and the Design & Planning Stage hasn't yet progressed beyond "it'll have a Meteor engine and it'll have wheels (not sure how many yet), but beyond that I haven't decided on anything".

It may seem mad to chop up a car for just the screen, bulkhead, doors and roof

Not at all. In fact, get a crashed one, that has been written off after a frontal, and you will get the whole BIW to chop up as you see fit!

Yep, it's awesome isn't it! Like one of those chats you have in the pub when you start thinking about what you'd really like to do if you had the time, money and permission smile

I think the angle of the C70 roof at the back would be more fitting to the long bonnet style bodywork that you are aiming for.
Especially if its to look like some of the previous 30s car pictured, or Captain Nemos car from the Legue of Extraordinary Gentlemen biggrin

I must admit it's looking unlikely 'Thor' will ever get built. All this talk of modern-ish cars as donors for the project - it'll end up looking like a ghastly caricature of a 1930s car. Either do it properly or don't do it at all. I'm sure someone else could use those Meteor engines...

Ignoring the hideous remainder of the body, the shape of this screen, roof , door hinge position might suit the project better?

Agera R screen is one of the best looking screen and has a 1 in 4 success so will be tad out of your budget I think as a donar car! smile

I actually wasn't thinking of butchering anything. I'd have thought there were replacement parts available from whole body shells and glass houses. But that is a guess.

Funnily enough I haven't been past recently. The kids are back from uni and have been walking him when we're not off shooting. Also, that path is a bit muddy so I've been off taking advantage of someone else's land (mainly the RSPB at Fowlmere).

Apparently the housekeeper took him over to your farm and there was a shoot going on. She told me she had to drag the dog away as he was convinced he could/should stay with the guns.

Sounds like you are near Great Chishill, used to live there many moons ago, my house was the highest point in Cambridgeshire....(wow)

Agree with this.
Do you have any examples or a pencil sketch of where you think your design is going?
If you still plan for just 2 seats then the position of the doors will be restricted by your double rear wheel plans. This in turn will make the design of the rear body shape very difficult. I suspect an almost vertical rear body and folding roof would work best with a 'Trunk/boot box' behind it sitting at about the rear axle line.

Here are a few of the cars I am considering all together to view.

No drawing of what it will look like yet as that is still a little fluid.
I like the art-deco look of the first picture for the front end and rear wheel cover(s). Then add the extra wheel and slope of the rear of the Captain America car.
The XKR roof would be my favourite and might work similar to the look of this roof...

If I knew how to do photoshop (or could be bothered to learn) I would try to create a design model to play with and test ideas. Maybe I will have to try!

For the nay-sayers.
I have two businesses to run, a family to keep (reasonably) happy, other cars to work on (or modify), I make a lot of the tools/equipment I use, have a few other hobbies as well as a social life.
Sometimes finances cause a change of plan, sometimes it is the law/bureaucracy or practicalities. Spending a bit of time on the planning can save a lot of problems in the future too.
If any others on here would like a Meteor engine I am happy to sell them one. Just pm me.

I have spent the day sanding down the filler primer on my new front clip for my Ultima and there is still a bit to do tomorrow before I can add the colour, hopefully tomorrow afternoon. The 6 coats of colour will then need flatting (1500 wet and dry) before I add the 4 to 6 coats of clear and then flatting that (2000 wet and dry). The flatting will take at least a day each time. The finish should end up 'show quality' metallic silver.
I intend making a new rear clip too and this will be happening alongside Thor progress. I want it finished before the Le Mans Classic.
Thor (or whatever I call it) will take quite a while and cost a fair bit (probably in excess of £50k), so if you feel you could complete something similar faster, then be my guest.
Feel free to remove this topic from your watched list.

For everyone else, please keep the suggestions coming.

Well said Paul.

I think the Audi roof will be better suited than the XKR, the XKR roof might look at touch lost on what is going to be a *very* long car.

Closest roof & windscreen I can think of to this....

...is (and I'm ashamed to even know this) looks like the Plymouth Prowler, although it doesn't extend so far back it's got the low roofline and small windows. Though given the scale of your project, it might be a bit small.

And where on earth you'd find one in the UK is anyone's guess (you'd be doing the world a favour if you were to chop one up though).
