King of the Rank!- 51 plate Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi purchased..

Hammered this down to a Classic Car show near Chester a couple of weekends back-
performed without fault, and papped a happy 63.08mpg for the 766 miles covered
To this end, I'd decided that I should actually see what she is needing to see her MOT in Dec.
All the brakes have been done, so my focus was more on the suspension and exhaust.
All 4 tyres could do with replacing soon-can get them for circa £35 a corner (Uniroyal rain experts) in super comfy 195/65/15.
Onto the suspension then..
Front arm rear bushes
Balljoints
the front bushes seemed fine too- no real deflection when a jemmy was applied- so it looks like both front arms are in servicable condition.
The CV boots were spot on, as werr the track rod ends. That said, the front tyres are feathering on the inside edge so tracking could do with being done - likely pick it up when doing the tyres
The ARB droplinks looked ok, but are so damn cheap they may get done regardless
It seems the big issue with the suspension is that after 190k miles the dampers are pretty much done..
this was the best looking of the 4.
Replacements come in at circa £150 for 4 Bilstein B4-not too bad. Big buggeration will be trying to get the 13 year old bolts to shift from topmonts and the lower mount points.
They seem to be a common failure point- but replacements can be collected from the dealer.

Next up was the exhaust -
Been blowing really badly since I got the car- turns out it was due to the fact that the front section of pipe was in no way, shape or form attached to the rest!
it had been previously bodged with jubilee clips and a roll of metal.
Nae stuff in stock to fix it today, so faffed it back together as well as it could be.
A replacement appears to be about £50 - again, swearing at bolts is the likely issue

As part of the general going over I did the usual fluid level checks.
Coolant/brake fluid all spot on, jowever the Oil level was ABOVE maximum..
This is a sign that the WVO is getting past the piston rings- and collecting in the sump.
The car is still running well, no obvious running issues and no MPG drop
Obviously this is not ideal! I took the most sensible path possible, based on the fact that it is a supercheap beater -
I dropped some oil out the sump and topped it up to max with fresh oil.
Over the last 4000miles it appeared to be approx 500ml- will keep an eye on it.

Had this out for more 1/4 mile antics- Ran a best of 17.32 at York a week past on Saturday. It really is great fun for the running costs- the cheap WVO meant that driving down to York Raceway and back (via Barnsley)was less than £30
Also managed to get a race against a stock 140bhp Superb- and was victorious!

I have run 4 of TDi engines albeit the AFN, over about 50k on veg oil, new and used. My conclusion was that its not worth the hassle, the engine will break or the turbo will go. Others say different, but if you have increasing sump oil I would think carefully before continuing. I filtered my veg with a centrifuge and mixed with petrol, and was pretty careful, to no avail. Got fed up replacing the cars although I actually made a profit strippping them for parts. And diesel is cheaper now too.
Fair comment and thanks for the observartionsI've spent hee haw on it and it owes me nowt- So I'll keep running and see how it goes
5000 miles in so far
Had this drag racing again at the weekend and ran a PB of 16.677 @82.4mph
this was in part due to some lightening by removing the rear seats/emptying boot/removing spare wheel etc.
Another thing that contributed was swapping to front tyres with some actual rubber in them- meaning it can actually get off the line!
I'll upload some pics when at the PC

I've pump been playing with the pump voltages on the map. The voltage controls the rate of fuel delivery - I.E. how close the pump gets to the theoretical 51mg of fuel max.
Apparently the highest you can set is 3.99v before you get into limp mode.
I built a version of the map with the pump voltages turned up, loaded it on and went for a run.
7The onboard logging showed that it was delivering more fuel, more readily, and the car certainly seems more responsive.
I took it back off as the throttle response was bloody sharp, and would likely be a hindrance in day to day running.
Will keep it for the drag strip, as I think it may help

this ran really badly when last drag racing. fuel filter was at fault, so swapped it out, and all was well.
now it is drawing in airand stalling.
Changed the valve on the filter for one on my brothers car (which had had new seals etc)
fuel is still frothy.
cant get the top screwed off the tank pickup/level sender.
gah!

Well known for killing dampers
I think they were well on their way out when it came to me at 187k..I was going to buy 4x Bilstein b4s and a set of eibach springs, but that would have exceeded the cost of the car. Luckily the air/fuel issue showed up the night before I ordered them.

What are the figures then ?
To buy
Parts
Fuel
Miles done ?
A gentleman never tells;)To buy
Parts

Miles done ?
Purchase price was very very cheap
Parts totalled £63.49 (oil/filter/air filter/pollen filter + Front Discs/Pads + tuning cable)
Miles covered circa 6000
Average fuel consumption was 58mpg, and an average tank (90/10 WVO to Derv) was approx £25. WVO was 35p/L and fuel averaged about £1.109 a litre
suffice to say it was cheaper than walking!
I bought a Pug 306 to replace this..
