Well that went rather well. There were two power/weight classes above us but nobody had entered the highest class so we had three cars in the class above us and three more in our class to compete against.

I had no idea what to expect from quali, I knew a couple of the guys in our class were experienced pedalers but that’s about all so I was surprised to find myself on the front row alongside a car from the higher class, all be it over a second off their pace but a couple of seconds clear of the cars behind!

The race was a rolling start so no opportunity to do my rocketship standing start unfortunately and I dropped a place off the line into turn one but made two back up at turn two which put me in the lead for a few laps until the Lotus that had started on pole managed to get past again and slowly gapped me by a few seconds.

It was a 100 minute race which had two mandatory three minute pitstops so we planned to do them as late as possible in the pit window (20-80mins) so we could take advantage if there was any safety cars or rain etc. In the end it was a totally clean race and as we competed the second stop I went back on track with 20 minutes left to run and found the Lotus about 5 seconds behind me in my mirrors clap.

I figured they must have had slightly long pitstops as ours were about right, (below 3 minutes attracts a stop-go penalty but anything over 3m is a waste so accuracy matters on the timing) but I also knew they were ultimately faster than me so although the class win looked secure I was at risk of losing the overall win which from a lower class would be a great result.

10 minutes of “quali laps” followed and I was keeping the gap acceptable but then got balked by traffic that cost me some time and the Lotus was within 1s of me but then he had a turn to be unlucky with a backmarker which pushed the gap back out to a couple of seconds and I kept the gap and took the flag woohoo .

There was coverage on YouTube so if anyone fancies a look we’re the last race of the day on here -

https://youtu.be/buIypL7enfs

The start looks ok and the last 20 minutes of the race is worth a watch, just avoid the interview afterwards paperbag

Thanks, and yes! An overall win from a lower class is a great feeling.

We are definitely getting more on top of the car now and while the grid wasn’t huge on Saturday the Lotus was a tough thing to beat.

We are back out with SuperCup in two weeks at Silverstone which I’m sure will be a very competitive race so we’ll see if I’m getting any closer to the front there scratchchin .

What was the black smoke after the bomb hole, last lap?
Not sure on the smoke scratchchin, I saw the same on the video but had no running issues I was aware of during the race.

Well done on the win!

What was your power to weight for that race? I'm not surprised there weren't many in the higher categories, there can't be too many cars that powerful about.
Thanks!

We are still pretty heavy so 270/ton was the class max (flywheel v car without driver).

The Lotus may have had slightly less power but weighing in at just over a ton instead of our porky 1340kg.

Thanks!

We’re out again on Sunday, this time on the Silverstone GP circuit.

It’s a GT Cup meeting so plenty of good racing to watch, if anyone is coming along please pop over and say hello or timing and commentary will be on TSL if anyone wants to follow from home.

So last weekend’s race was a lively one!

There was about 50 cars on the grid and I managed to quali in 5th place. Got a good run off the line so was leading into turn 1 but before getting to turn 2 red flags were out frown .

Three cars had come together at the start line and ended up in the pitwall so I led the train back round and because we were the last race of the day we were re-gridded to our starting order and restarted under safety car to save time. This meant no lightning starts but there was some good battling for a few laps then the SC came out again just as I passed the pit entry. This meant some of the cars behind were able to pit under safety car and gain a load of time but the leading pack all had to pit under normal running.

The race was shortened to fit the curfew and I crossed the line 2nd in class and 5th overall behind a couple of lower class cars that had (quite rightly) taken advantage of the opportunity to pit under SC conditions.

In some ways a scrappy race but pace is still improving, the cars I was struggling against earlier in the season are now within sight and we’ve podiumed on the last three outings cool .

Next scheduled race is with 750 Motor Club at Oulton in their Enduro Championship. I’m currently on the reserve list but hoping they will be able to get me in which would mean we’ve been out with three different clubs in our first year.

Thanks Matt, I was about 25th reserve back April when I went on the list getmecoat

I think there’s a lot that will be no-shows when it comes to confirming their slots but we may need a conversation about that amongst things thumbup

Back at it again we have got the entry confirmed for 750 Club Enduro at Oulton on Oct 9th. It’s a live streamed 2 hour race with one fuel stop and for this one I’m sharing the car with a mate so we’ll see how we can make that all work.

We went to Oulton this week for a trackday because Paul had only done a few laps in the car previously so we figured it would be wise to get his eye in. It was also a chance to see how the car has progressed over the season as I tested it out there in April. It was a busy event so lots of traffic all day but the car went perfectly and the data shows that pace was almost 2s/lap faster than in April which tallys up about right with how things have progressed on the race days.

This will be the first race with 750mc in this car so to make sure we are compliant with the power to weight regs I was straight off to the dyno the next day for an official power run.

Tegiwa are the sponsors of Club Enduro and are quite local to me so they are the ideal choice to get the numbers but it turned out the numbers were a bit different to what I expected.

The map we’ve been running all year is looking about 20 brake down on what I expected and I already knew we were overweight for our class in MSV SuperCup so it turns out I wasn’t far off correct for the class below! I’m looking on the bright side for this though as it means we got two podiums despite some notable handicaps!

The map we need to use to get the right power/weight ratio for Club Enduro is doing the opposite however and running slightly higher than I was expecting so we are trying to get a tweak done to it this week and failing that I’ll have to add a bit of weight to get it correct.

So still plenty to do over the next week or two but I can’t wait to get back out with the club I’ve done most of my previous racing with woohoo .

Thanks Julian, I can’t wait to see the new purchase, it looks gorgeous on the pics coolcoolcool but I won’t give anything else away wink.

Yesterday’s race was great fun and I will update properly but for now lets say it was a successful day out tongue out

I was really pleased with the coverage, they don’t always look enough at all the different classes but I think we got a decent amount of camera time.

Excellent racing.

Decent section of video with the chasing Lotus starts at 3:42:46.

When I was watching it live I thought you were a bit bouncy, but watching it again, it was a bump on the track.
Oulton is a mega circuit to drive but not particularly suited to a heavy car like ours against lightweight stuff like the Lotus so that was a great battle.

So a quick rundown from last weekend……..

This was my first race in 750 Club Enduro since I won the championship in 2018. I didn’t want to rush back in while we were still getting the teething issues sorted on the car but it is one of the top options for next year and this was a chance to see how things have moved on in the last few years.

They’ve moved on a lot!

When we raced at Oulton in 18 pole time for class B was a 1.56.5, I managed a 154.6 in quali on Saturday and that was third in class! The time I did would have put me 4th on the overall grid in 18, on Saturday I was 17th eek . In fact on the grid I was one place higher overall in 18 despite being in a class C car then.

2018

2021

The good news was that the two cars ahead of me in class B were only a few 10ths off and I got caught by traffic on my flying lap so my optimum time would have put me ahead of both of them by a couple of tenths.

This was my quali lap -

https://youtu.be/1EYVDNAf09U

I could see on the timer that I was over 2s up on my previous lap which was a 1.56 dead so I should have hit a high 1.53, the car at the last turn did nothing to actually hinder me but I had to go off line to pass him and that cost enough.

So, to the race. This was a 125 minute race with a single fuel stop which has to last at least three minutes. You aren’t allowed to stop in the first 30 or last 15 minutes of the race. We were also doing a driver swap as this was the first race where I was sharing the car.

The car isn’t quite where I want it yet on the power/weight balance so we knew we needed to be carrying around 30ltrs of fuel at the end to be safe on weight which meant our effective pit window didn’t open until about 50 minutes into the race. You alway try to pit under safety car where possible so what we really didn’t want was a safety car between 30-50 minutes as it would mean our competition could pit to take advantage at a time that we couldn’t.

So I was in first and we started the race with a rolling start. I got boxed in for the first couple of corners but finished the first lap up a place despite getting shunted from behind by another car and continued to press on for a few laps getting myself up from 17th to 12th overall and 1st in class by lap 10.

There had been an early safety car which wasn’t a big surprise but it was before the pits opened so nobody could take advantage of it. But then about 40 minutes in there was a second safety car called out banghead, just when we couldn’t take advantage of it.

Almost the entire field pitted leaving me and a few other cars rolling round and I was then showing as 2nd place overall but we knew that I still had to pit and would lose all the time. When it went green again I kept plugging laps in and just after the one hour point I saw a car pulling off the track at the exit of Knickerbrook chicane, but it didn’t make it all the way off and so was in a dangerous position.

I radioed to the pits to say there may be another safety car and sure enough a couple of corners later all the signs were out and I dived into the pitlane.

It’s quite tricky to get 40ltrs of fuel into a car to strict regulations and do a driver change in under three minutes but we’d been practicing and we did it just under the line and the pace of the safety car meant we had been able to get in and out again without losing a lap; Paul got back out on track just before the SC train passed along the start/finish.

The final result of all this was that we restarted with around a 50s lead in our class and Paul kept it clean and safe for his stint. The only final drama was a car putting a lot of oil down a few minutes from the end causing multiple cars to go off but luckily we were not amongst them and they very sensibly put out red and chequered flags at the same time to avoid any risk in the last couple of laps.

Which left us first in class B and eighth overall!

This is most likely my last race of the season so a great way to finish it all off. The car has been getting better as we’ve developed it and this result means we’ve had four podiums, two class wins and an overall win on our first season which I’m really pleased with!

There’s a few plans in place of some tweaks and improvements over the winter and I’m really looking forward to sorting out what we will be doing next year!

Thanks, the car does get plenty of attention and it’s nice that we got a share of the streaming as well.

We got a bit lucky with the final Safety Car, I knew we were vulnerable for that time window and it’s an issue that will be fixed for next year.

By the way, who was Darren Ball Remove (up near the top of the qualifying list)?
Is that form of weight saving allowed under the rules?
I rather assumed you needed them in place to be a racing driver whistle

Julian posting up reminds me that I have been a bit quiet on here since the final race paperbag

Nature of the season ending to some extent but racing at this level doesn’t allow for a few quiet months in the villa in Monaco; instead there has been a huge amount of planning for next season and a certain amount of car tweaking going on so there will be updates coming in the next few weeks beer

There will be live streamed coverage and possibly some opportunities to get a bit involved and come along and see some club endurance racing.

May be worth a new 2022 IMR Cayman thread, to cover next years plans and exploits scratchchin

Hi Dan

That was a great race but I was getting frustrated there just watching that sequence and knowing we could both go faster laughlaugh

I’m hoping to do some of the MSVR stuff again this year although I think some will clash with other plans, the season is nearly here though and I can’t wait to get started!

What is your race calendar for the year.
I’m with a new teammate and going back into the 750 Enduro Championship. I won class C and the overall title with Mattnoss in 18 and took the class B win in the Cayman at the last round of last year so hoping to be competitive but there’s some serious kit in there, mostly run by pro teams so we’re expecting a battle.

That green and white TCR car was a pain wasn't he? Knew just how to back you up on corner entry, then outdrag you on the straights, good work getting past him finally.
Yea, a very quick car but not much good at Cadwell, passing in the pits was the only way I could see of making it happen without doing anything daft. If he’d come right out behind me he might have been a problem as he could follow round there but couldn’t lead, but I was pretty sure that so long as he didn’t have a tow after the stops there was no way he was catching up.
