I keep my old cars in my "garage" on the Vehicle Smart app and I wonder what's happened to this car....

It is currently registered as sorn, and the MOT expires in 2 days. Being registered as sorn could mean the car is for sale, has been taken off the road (it's not really a car to store and save for the summer!) or whatever.... However, it's not even on the insurance database. Which seems very odd. I wonder if it's been scrapped or written off or something but still registered as sorn.

Weird, what think you lot?

Broken for parts is one option. Complex cars, very expensive new bits, people now running them without wanting the running costs of a super-barge means there is a decent market for used parts.

Might find bits of it on eBay.

Seems odd, it was a good solid example (at least when I sold it) aside from it needing a track rod end (for which it was actually booked in for, but then I decided to sell). I don't think it wanted for anything else! Although you never know.....if the steering rack went, or some suspension went it could soon cost several £k.

I've sold plenty of solid cars that have never passes another MOT.

Sad but most owners of older cars give up at the first bill.

Be a shame if that is the case. Hey ho!

Not really, being a solid car doesn't necessarily mean it's not going to get stripped - it's just a matter of cost for the breakers. I fear that's what happened to a car I sold to someone who owns a garage, but truly we'll never know unless there is somewhere you can check for certificates of destruction (and assuming that these have actually been done!)

Considering the LS460, a quick look on eBay shows knackered wheels for £150 each, used calipers for £170 each, steering rack £500, engine £2k, gearbox £700. Just that lot is more than half of what some LS460s are selling for now. Add the bare doors plus the door trims, glass etc and you are probably at the full value of the car, everything else is a bonus. Sure, you have to add the labour to dismantle and put it all up for sale, but they absolutely pick it to the bare shell.

Most of us wouldn't entertain the idea of breaking cars on the drive so it is irrelevant for us, but I know a house that always has a car being disassembled for bits. They only seem to take a week or two until it's an empty shell on the back of their truck, then I see a different car on the truck, rinse and repeat. Neighbours probably love him.

Alternatively, he's gone to a farm to live with other Lexuses and chase IS200s about. hehe

Thing is it was sold to a dealer that had it up for £7500, so seems odd to break it if you spent that on it, no?

Depends. If you're at the behest of the garage to maintain a car then one bill for something like a steering rack, major suspension work, gearbox fault etc will quickly add up to a significant percentage of the cars value.

Only really works if you DIY or have deep pockets.

Guess I'll never know what happened to it. Just find it strange that someone may have paid £7500 for it under 1 year ago /last V5 was April last year apparently) and then scrap it. Likewise, I can't think of any other reason why it's be not insured.

Wouldn't be registered as sorn though, would it?

Could it have been put on a private plate? The owner might have SORNed it for all sorts of reasons.

That's a fair point, to be fair.
