I had a peugeot 206 on an 2004 54 plate as my first car and i have to say its cheap to run, i easily got 40mpg around town and 50mpg on a run, insurance group is low - 3. road tax is £110 a year which is average and if you crash it... they are very cheap to repair as there are thousands of the buggers around ( for parts etc )

The only downside is that the 1.1 'sport' version i had was quite nippy around town but on the run doing 60mph in 5th gear is very noisy. If insurance allows go for a 1.4 16v version ( insurance group 6 i think )

And have you tried Adrian Flux for insurance? in my first year i paid £1250 fully comp (age19) but in my 2nd year with a years NCB i got it down to £705 fully comp or £485 TPFT (age20). The 206 has now gone and I have a lovely Fiesta ST.

Point im making is go for something like insurance group 3 or under, get a years NCB and a years exp on your driving License and then go for something better, My friend whos 19 -has a Clio 172 as his first car and is paying £370 a month a month to insure it frown he paid £3k for the car and around 3.2k on insurance, then of course next years which will go down to around £2k im guessing so he's easily going to spend £7-8k on the car over 3 years ands thats not including petrol servicing and MOT'S etc.

the mini is very appealing but its the saftey aspect that worries me
Insurance is well under a grand aged 17 I know people who pay 5/600 on one
Footman James offer classic insurance for 17 year olds and even on my modified example I still pay 1/2 as much as i was quoted on a 1.0 corsa life. I did have a low speed crash and it held up pretty well.
If want a newer car I would say get a mk 5 1.25 fiesta zetec is a real fun drive and they are quite nippy for the size of engine which imo is one of the best small engines evver made.

the corsa appeals to be because it is easy to style in the way i want
That sounds ominous. Please avoid bolting stick-on tat to a first car if you want to keep your insurance premiums low (and not get laughed at).

Some of the older volvo estates are pretty cheap to buy and insure, quite powerful and RWD (if you're after performance not looks!). Good for going camping or road trips with your mates aswell.

FTR, I had a 1.6 306 as my first car insured on provisional with quinn when 17 - £900 but i gather its gone up ALOT since then lol.
Ive been stuck with a rover 45 for the last few months as I had zero finances and a family friend gave it to me, I was about to get an omega 2.5 V6 on finance, yep the insurance was cheaper on the omega than the scensoredt that is my 1.6 45 frown
