My E36 328 Track Toy Build
Discussion
My task for today was to refit the standard ARB i removed previously as i've noticed alot of rear sway in corners. Unfortunately the day didnt go as planned.
For some reason when i woke up i decided to fit the Powerflex front bushes i've had lying around for ages. It turns out this are a real PITA to fit!
I had some spare 'lollipops' in the shed so i got them out and bashed the inner metal rings out with a hammer and screw driver, no problems there. Pressing the new bush into place wasnt the easiest of tasks but i do have a tip for anyone who is going to be doing it. Jack up the car with the bush & lollipop inbetween, its enough weight to press the start of the bush in, then you can use a rubber mallet to get it the rest of the way.
The hardest part is trying to get the lollipop bolted back in with the new bush in place. I spent a good 2 hours leavering, prying and hammering with no success.
The secret is to take a blow torch to the outer bush before you put it on, once it has some heat in it there is just enought flexability to get the lollipop holes lined up. It may need a bit of beating with a hammer but it will go into place eventually.
Once i found the heating method it only took around 45 minutes to finish the first side and repeat the process on the other side
I took the car for a little spin on the road and it does seem to have sharpened up the turn in a bit, but its also caused understeer in low speed corners which is what i was afraid of.
Next dry day activity is to refit the ARB.

Have you ever suffered top end rattling when it's out on track?
Mine seems to develop a rattle but once it's cooled down it's sweat as a nut again, it's proving a bit tricky to find as once I've got it home I can't replicate the fault.
Not to worried as it's done two days like it and never got any worse just a bit annoying.
You also mentioned that your clutch was on it's way out, did you replace it? what did you go for. I've just removed mine as it was starting to slip and was in two minds weather to go for a std one or to upgrade.
Cheers

I've not suffered it, but i have read about it! i thought it was just an M3 thing?
Apparently its a slight oil starvation and the tappets start to clatter, alot of people seemed to suggest slightly overfilling the oil. Apparently there is a second line on the dipstick to indicate the absolute max level? i cant say i've seen it but others suggested once you top it up to there it no longer stuffers the starvation.
The clutch isnt something i've got around to yet as its not a dire issue. I'm thinking about a lightweight flywheel and paddle clutch. there are a few different kits around so not sure what to go for.
The americans seem to rate the F1 brand thats about £350. From a quick look it seemed to be a cheapo clutch that didnt look like it would last long...
I've read that too with regard the oil starvation and I guess it makes sense given that it's only an issue on track but fine on the road.
I'm thinking of going for a Black Diamond Kevlar clutch at £300 ish, should do the trick fingers crossed.

D

Are you ditching the DM flywheel at the same time in favour of a solid lightened flywheel? this is my intention, should be able to shave 10kg's!I'm thinking of going for a Black Diamond Kevlar clutch at £300 ish, should do the trick fingers crossed.

Not too much been going on today. Earlier in the week i removed some of the disused wiring which came to 1.2kg's.
I also removed the airbox in favour of a cone filter, the standard airbox came in at 1.6kg's! i extimate the cone filter was only around 500grams so a good saving there aswell.
Today i grabbed some pipe insulation from B&Q to cover part of the cage around the driver area as i was finding my elbow bashing the door bar. I've used it to cover the potential impact area's in a crash. The head/helmet at the top, arm/elbow on the doorbar and ankle on the lower front of the cage.
Heres a quick snap
Had a day out at Llandown circuit in the wet (very wet!) yesterday.
It was a good day all round, the car ran well all day and over than an off into the infield causing a tyre to catch on the wing bending it a little, nothing a hammer couldnt fix
I filmed all of my sessions so if you are bored you can see a few entertaining spins and my progression through the day as this was the first time i'd been to llandow.
