I've decided to start a bit of a thread on my XJR. It's the third one I've had, I always regretted getting rid of the others so a couple of weeks ago when my wife told me I needed to buy the "sensible car for us to run about in" I wasted no time getting on eBay.

Now, I'm not made of money so it was a case of selecting 'price lowest first' and crossing my fingers. Much bidding/being outbid later and I won one! So....This is my £1800 XJR V8 -

To be honest for £1800 as you can imagine I wasn't expecting much. We drove down to Reading to collect the car, 2 hours to think about what I'd done. I needn't have worried though as the car is spot on. Everything works apart from the sunroof and the key fob, it drives, brakes and stops exactly as you'd want it too and there are hardly any rust bubbles or blemishes.

After driving the car home I love it. I even spotted one of my all time favourite cars being trailered down the motorway which made my day -

There are a few issues with the car which I'll go into in a later post but nothing serious. On the whole it's lovely, I even found the book pack with full stamped service history up to 3k ago under the seat! I treated it to a wash and wax, and took it for a 'get to know it' drive in the Peak District.

So that's it, a sensible everyday car just as I was asked to get. What could possibly go wrong?

These actually sell at £1800?! Seriously? I've never even considered an XJR thinking they were in the £10k plus range!

Very much looking forward to this!

So...the problems.

The first couple became apparent almost immediately after buying the car, on the way home in fact. I wanted to check the tyre pressures before driving home, but the BBS wheels have a hidden valve behind one of the split rims bolts and you need an adaptor and predictably I didn't have it. A quick call to Jaguar and £23 later I had the adaptor and all was good.

You can see the screw covering the valve in the bottom left of the picture, this picture also highlights how much the wheels need a refurb.

The second problem was as you accelerated up to motorway speeds it flashed "restricted performance" for around 30 seconds. It felt no different but obviously something was wrong. Having since plugged the car in it had 5 fault codes, both Lambdas, both Cat emmisons and EGR flow. Reading up on it everyone seemed to point the finger at a partially blocked EGR valve so this was removed, cleaned (it was filthy) and refitted and it's been fine since so fingers crossed for an easy fix.

Since then several hundred miles in the space of 3 days before the lockdown and it was faultless. I love this car.

Next up...more problems/fixes!

Looks like a good buy for the money.

Is there a bolt missing out of that wheel ?

Yes there is! I only took that photo this morning, one of the other issues was that the car had locking wheel nuts, but didn't come with a key! I managed to remove all 4 lockers this morning, and order 4 new standard nuts.

Its high at 192k, although for a 20 year old car not too bad and I'm trying to convince myself that means most of its issues are behind it.

Lovely car and Bookmarked! So far so good though.

Was it bought private or a dealer 'getting rid' ?

half decent branded tyres and pads suggests its not been maintained on a shoestring.

It was a company on eBay that buys cars at auction and then immediately sells them online without prepping them or really doing anything. I guess it's pot luck if you get a good or bad car but so far so good.

I wish they'd done the discs at the same time as the pads. They're quite badly warped so a new set is on its way along with new pads.

A Reading based company? I've seen them / follow them on eBay. They look to have a good spread of cars. Good luck though, keep the updates coming!
