Late in 2024 I turned 40. On the approach to this most auspicious occasion I happened to be car shopping, Mrs geeks had given authorisation for a second car purchase, I had been talking a special Golf of some sort or maybe an M4 when I happened upon a PH auction.... https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/auction/17169834 I spent a few hours day dreaming and moved on, but not before I sent the link to Mrs geeks and casually mentioned how it was just about in budget for what I was going to spend and thought nothing else of it.

Or at least that's what I thought had happened. What actually happened was I spent more and more time looking at R8's on the internet wondering if I could actually own a dream car, it was just about in reach in terms of what I was looking to spend.

Enter an ad for an R8 in Bury St Edmands, give or take an hours drive. I went over the Ad, emailed the dealer back and forth a bit and on a drizzly overcast Saturday morning we jumped into Mrs geeks car and set off to have a look. On arrival the dealer handed me the keys, popped the trade plates on the dash and sent us both out for a test drive with a suggested route and to take our time. We spent 30 minutes giggling and very much deciding it was the one. On return we did a deal and it was set for delivery mid October.

The night before I was like a child awaiting Santa, the next day it arrived....

I even got to drive it off the trailer smile

Once off the trailer I took a few snaps and then sadly had to go back to work.

So what we have here is an 08 Type 42 V8 manual, mag rides (quiet at the back), B&O and in Mugello Blue with Silver Blades (there is a name for it, I can't remember what it is).

I was admiring a blue R8 V10 at the PHSS, but it wasn't a manual.

I must resist!

I’m going to say this so I’m in the loop “What could possibly go wrong”? I genuinely hope ownership is completely uneventful other than many smiles.

I’m going to comment so I can see how this goes.

As a side note I love watch Ricky from REPerformance on his youtube channel. It always amazes me how knowledgable someone can be about a brand of car.

Was loooking at TTRS and Goliath Quads myself over the last few months. Must resist now adding an R8 to my search list.

Congrats on the car, and starting the thread - subscribed! There's very few OC threads on R8s so great to have you join the club.

Stunning, I love these. I can't get my head around that being a 17 year old car, looks so modern.

Considering it was delivered in October and the OP's thread title I can only guess that major financial meltdown is imminent!

Hoping for thread content (but not the OP's wallet) that Ricky at RE was involved, either way book marked for further reading!

Brilliant, and a lovely colour.

Are these relatively bomb-proof? Didn't realise they were so "cheap".

They seem to be popular with most the American YouTuber types, when I say popular they produce lots and lots of content……..and repairs.

Thanks for all the comments so far, apologies for the delay in this next post I actually wrote it up the same evening as the opening post but just didn't get time to post it.

So where were we...

Well this is where it all starts to get a bit wobbly.

Mrs geeks and I finished work that day and of course it was time to go for a drive, it might have been October but dammit I had bought myself a supercar and I was going to drive it, fortunately the weather was good so off we went,

20 miles in as I was slowing down for some traffic lights, the unthinkable happened. The EML came on.

fk!

Alongside this the aircon wasn't working

fk part duex!

Fortunately the car was driving just fine but to be on the safe side we decided to head home, we returned via the fish and chip shop, where upon Mrs geeks declared she wanted a drive so we swapped for the 5 mile run home and she declared the experience a positive one.

Once I got home I messaged the dealer I had purchased it from about the EML and the lack of aircon and wondered what would come next, suddenly Ricky from REperformance YouTube guides were replaying in my head. I had checked it on the test drive and all the other items he had mentioned. It had a good service history, just 2 owners etc.

Fortunately the dealer came back to me quickly and apologised for the issues and promised to get it sorted, he collected it the next day and took it straight to Audi in Bury. So I watched it leave the same way it had arrived just 24 hours into ownership.

A couple of days later Tom called me, the diagnosis for the EML was the coil pack on cylinder 4, this would be fixed for me FoC, while it was in at Audi he had taken the decision to have them run a health check to see if anything else was lurking that he should know about before bringing it back to me, the oil cooler pipes were showing signs of perishing (a well known issue on these) so they would also be replaced and the oil cooler too, all very positive.

The aircon would also be an issue Audi had diagnosed a dead compressor and quoted £7k to replace it as it is considered an engine out operation, in Toms words "I am happy to have this sorted for you but I am not having my pants pulled down for it, that's a disgusting price and even if you were footing the bill I would advise you to get a second opinion" we had a chat about options, he had a specialist that he used from time to time when they were unable to get certain repairs done by a dealer for a sensible price, he wanted to take it there to have them look at it and see if the compressor was really dead and if so was there a more economical way of getting it sorted.

These have aged so incredibly well and represent such good value for money.

I'm glad to see the dealer has been so accomodating on the issues - I spent 4 years in used prestige and pressing an air conditioning button in a vehicle when buying privately or through premium auction was one of the first things I/we did as a dealer, I'm surprised at this price point it wasn't picked up on at any stage in the process from prep to handover. But as ever, the measure of a good dealer is in the after sales.

I wish you many happy miles.
