Well I sold my RX8 PZ

a couple months back and picked up an old E36 to smoke around in while I decided what to get next.
The Beemer obviously wasn't a patch on the PZ as a drivers car, but after running an RX8 I welcomed the simplicity of it. Start it, stop it wherever, whenever you want, 95 Ron fuel and no engine paranoia, you get the picture.
Anyway I'm going German again with this black Audi TT 180 quattro.
Plenty of receipts for recent work including a cambelt service (within last 20k) recon turbo & remap to 204hp.
I know these get a lot of hate, but ive always fancied one, they are a nice capable car imo, good value too.
I will give it a good going over and probably make some subtle improvements.

I'd be really interested to hear your views on the contrast with what represents 'the best of the bunch' RX8. The TT has always intrigued me, as a sort of refined alternative to an Impreza or Evo.
Conventional PH wisdom would tell you that the TT is "much heavier" (actually it's less than 100kg), that the RX8 has a "much better balance", and that the TT "isn't a drivers' car". It would be good to get it from the horse's mouth.

Nice, I've been having a look at ads for these recently, certainly cheap now and they seem like they've quite a lot to offer. Nice small coupe body, decent performance particularly the 225, plus 4WD is interesting.
Some have touted them as a future classic so it might be worth hanging onto a decent one while the numbers left thin out...

I'd say that was pretty optimistic, given how bloody many of them there are. The Quattro Sport 240 will almost certainly appreciate in value, and I can't see how the few manual V6 examples can get any cheaper.However, the bog-standard 1.8T (even in 225 format with all the trimmings) is not a particularly rare or desirable beast, either relative to its competition or the range in general. Given its lukewarm press reception and zero motorsport pedigree, I'd be very doubtful whether an average example appreciates significantly.

Too right. I've only ever been a passenger in a standard 225, driven a remapped 225 (circa 270hp) on eibach springs and have had many goes in mk4 Golf GTIs /Leons Cupra Rs. I can only conclude that people who still refer to TTs as a mk4 golf in a frock have never driven one or were for some reason expecting a standard TT to behave like a track car.
There are a couple of relatively inexpensive mods like anti roll bar and spring upgrades to reduce the bodyroll but without lowering excessively!

There used to be plenty of mk1 xr2s about as well, Astra gte's etc. They will appreciate but only the same as any of the everyday 80s hatch backs have, in my opinion.
Interesting comments on whether the TT will become a future classic or not, if the QS goes up in value, which I think it well, then nice coupes will go up too, but its future value doesn't interest me, the current value to me is £2k, which is what I paid 2 days ago

The TT is sitting a little lower than standard, had a flick through the paperwork and found a receipt for a set of springs fitted in 2014. Also has an air filter and dv, which is thankfully quite quiet, to go along with the map.
The original airbox etc came with the car, as did a full size spare which now lives in the shed.

Is there a consensus on how the TT handles generally? With the extra weight mentioned is it more hot hatch or small GT than a sports car as such? With the 4WD I should think the grip/traction is good...
It doesn't handle great. It is of course safe and everyday everyman useable to push along quite quick but I find it vague.Apparently when Audi added the spiller and traction control they also messed with the front wishbones.
The original wishbones are very rare but there is a fix using a kit designed by a company called defcon which I'm soon to try
That and r32 front and rear arbs and increasing the camber on the front is supposed to transform them into something that does handle well
