My previous car has now gone, as it was costing far too much in fuel for a student, and has been replaced with this:

Cost me £250 from a family member. Has 105,000 miles on it. It's a 1.6 petrol, which is glacially slow, but wonderfully frugal (averaging 41mpg at the moment). It's got a dent on the wing which was done about three years ago, which makes the drivers door squeak every time you open it.

Last service was at 97,000 miles. The front and rear brakes were overhauled, along with all fluid changes (oil, brake and coolant) as well as various oddities, bulbs etc...

It's a "W" reg so 12 years old, but is quiet, very comfortable, plenty of space and no issues (apart from the bodywork mentioned). It has electric heated mirrors, windows, (working) air con etc... so not devoid of toys. Oh and a nice sound system.

I know it's not very 'PH' but there does seem to be a bangernomics following on here smile

Well, first problem has arisen. Readjusting my driver's side mirror and the knob fell back into the door. 40mins with a screwdriver and some adhesive / duct tape and it's back where it should be smile

My MIL has a Megane of the same vintage, 1.6. That thing pretty much runs on air, how I'll never know. Driven in lots of stop-start and doing some fag-packet calculations gets high 30's.
It is incredibly frugal for what it is. Very impressed. It's not the sort of car you could enjoy if you tried to drive it sportily (is that a word?) though. I have a dual carriageway most days and it just wafts along at 60-70 very nicely indeed. Covered 100 miles in it last night (driving from home back to uni) with no hiccups smile

Covered 200 miles over it at the weekend. Again, no problems. And I've got the driver's seat set up a little more comfortably now. I didn't realise it was height adjustable. Does anyone know the service intervals for these? Mileage wise it looks like it might needs an oil and fiter in the next few thousand? (done approx 8000 since last service). If so I'll do it when I get home for the easter break - I'm not paying a garage man for that.

Been flicking through all the paperwork. Got till July for the MOT which is better than I thought! Tax is due soon though, due to previous owner only putting 6 months on, so that'll be £200 odd.

I needs a damn good clean inside and out though. The inside is filthy. Carpets covered in little stones and st.

honest enough motor and very frugal by the sound of it
:L the previous owner didn't do that though. It just came back from it's last MOT with them tied on?!

I've found a problem. Well it's not really a problem per se... but some hidden history. It's had 30k miles shaved off it at some point - looks to be just before it was sold to my uncle at 18k miles. Or rather, 48k miles.

That'll make no odds now as it sounds like a good runner, just lose no opportunity to remind your uncle that he's a numpty..
My thoughts. Does explain why the steering wheel looks a little tired.

Right - I've given it a good going over inside today. Well sort of. I did the front (which was filthy) and then I got bored and got on with fitting some replacement instrument bulbs that needed doing.

The result:

Sorry about the rubbish image quality. But there we go.

Cost me less than £1 for the replacement dash bulbs. So bangernomics is still go!

Hi,

I don't think I could have gone from your Lexus to this. No offence. I just couldn't, maybe it is my inner snob! I see the reasons for doing it though..

I like the idea of bangers. I doubt I could ever buy one though for some reason! I hope it serves you well mate.

Enjoy! (?) thumbup
It isn't actually any worse to drive to be honest. Different, yes, but not worse.

Infact I'd say the Renault is a fair bit comfier for cruising. Would like a bit extra poke though.

Yeah that's really the only blemish on the whole car. Apart from a stone chipped front bumper. Would be nice to do something about it but not worth paying. Will have a look and see if I can bash it out a bit smile

Just got the MOT ultimatum. I have never had.

She needs two tyres, a ball joint and track rod end, exhaust (inc cat), two rear wheel bearings, welding on the crossmember that holds the radiator in, new front number plate and two bulbs.

Shhhh - It's an excuse to get a new banger.

Anyway the Laguna has gone to the big scrapyard in the sky.

Cartakeback.co.uk took it - very good service indeed.

Got £260 for it.

Not bad.

smile

On the hunt for my next banger now!
