Right, one rule for this thread. Do not mention the F word. Punishable by Um Bongo.

Some of you may know i'm partial to playing with Mr2s. Mk1's and Mk3's with 3.0 V6's in them have been the order of the day for some years now. It's what made me want to be a mechanic and set up my own business.

My heart will always belong to the Mk1.

Anywhos, having said that, i have just agreed to part ex the Mk3 V6 for this :

Now swallow that mouthful of sick and read on.

I'm not a fan of these cars, trying to be something they are not. Proportions wrong, wheels sit wrong, interior wrong, turbo whistles and missing cylinders.

This one will be different. I hope. All badges will be removed. There will not be a well hung animal on this (only in it....laugh ). A schmert interior and some different wheels, proper suspension and appropriate brakes.

So all in it should look like a well sorted wide arch Mr2.

I'm also doing a couple of other mods which include this :

Some of you will understand biggrin

I don't expect it to be the next thing in finesse but i like daft projects and this is going to be just that.

Couple of weeks should have it home and then i can get started with the jobby autosol.

Feel free to mock. Special lightweight rocks available for those caught at the back of the crowd.

Cheers,
Olber

OK what are you mating to that then?? That's the new type of Audi box which allows fitment of pretty much anything right? biggrin
Bingo.

That's the plan. All 414bhp of it biggrin If i can't get one for a decent price i'll settle for a 340 AHC.

We know it bolts up, all the clutch assembly will need to work is a 6/10 bolt spigot adapter made up and it will go in the engine bay with only needing to make a tunnel in the boot floor.

No front firewall mods, no fuel tank shortening, no moving of struts.

Watch this space!

No chance i'll have the time now, sorry!

It's a doddle in a Mk2 though if you can swing a spanner.

You need your suede looking at Olie, love the engine plans but such a shame to put it in a replica. Would be so much better in an unassuming looking rev1 3s-fe lookalike smile

I was thinking where I was going to go for my next project and that gearbox and engine combinations is something I have been considering for some time (Ask Paul smile ). The cheaper RS6 engine was a thought but whooshy boosty stuff just adds complexity and reliability headaches.
2.7 V6TT engine is that? I still quite fancy one of those in a VX220. Same idea as the Lotus Esthi.

This should do for now. As it's been chopped about to get the bodykit on i'm happy to do a bit more chopping on this one to get the engine in.

Think of it as a proof of design, if it works then it will be going into other cars to come.

Not pimping for business here btw, i'm a full time Insurance Broker these days, purely a project.

Like i say, could be good, could be st. Only one way to find out...

You reckon the TTV8's are cheaper than the NA jobs?

Why not rip out the 2GR and buy yourself a welder biggrin What's the worst that can happen?

They'll all pretty much happen at the same time.

Gearbox is coming with the car, then just need to source engine and bolt together initially.

Cut tunnel in boot floor and subframe, make up new engine cradle and gearbox support, check it's all going to fit.

Remove engine and box, weld in tunnel and paint along with cradle and new mounts. It'll be an all black engine bay.

Then i need to get a spigot made up to allow the new fangled clutch to work with the engine.

Then bolt the lot together and put it back in the bay. Route all the pipework for fuel and coolant, hang the exhausts and pipe to them from the fannymoulds, sort the gear selector, the intake, the driveshafts and then it's ECU time.

Shouldn't take me that long but famous last words an all that (See house rebuild thread laugh )

I'll polybush the suspension and get some decent coilovers on there too. Brakes will be upgraded to Rev2+ or better.

Once that lot is done i'll MOT it and source some new wheels, tidy up the bodywork and see about one of Steve's spanking interior re-trims.

Quite fancy some BBS CH's now scratchchin

Fascinating project Olber, I'll watch with great interest! Is the engine coming first or the body bits?

What's the setup with the roof on it by the way? It's a t-bar but the glass panels are body coloured. Are they just painted, or vinyl, or replaced altogether with one of those one-piece fibreglass panels?

Edited by OwenK on Tuesday 3rd April 23:32
Just noticed that 2nd bit.

It's 1 fibreglass panel over the whole T-Bar. I'm unsure on whether to keep it that way or put the glass back in.

Cheers Craig but i'm sticking with the Audi as i know it fits/will work.

Anywhos, let the games begin!

It has arrived.

An hour or so later :

Actually, that's a lie. The previous owner gave me a good deal on keeping the old engine and box so i just had to tidy things up.

Look at the room in there though! Won't be for too long mind you biggrin

Measured up the box and it'll fit in with a little bit of room to spare but not much. Gonna have to relocate the breathers etc from the front firewall there but that's all simple stuff.

Off to buy some cutting discs and get started on the boot floor.

I suppose it makes it to "try hard" again.

May as well stick to the original plan.

"Did you see that? I think that's the point of no return dear."

Tonight we cut holes. Big holes. Ignore the rough edges for now, it will all be boxed in and looking factory fresh by the time i'm finished (see my other builds for the finish i like).

Now this hole is bigger than the finished article will be so i'll be able to have a useable boot. You don't get that on a 355 biggrin

Ales....oop!

Now the eagle eyed among you will notice that the fuel filler pipe is going to cause a slight issue. I should be able to relocate that further down the firewall to avoid the left head bank.

Everything else looks like it will fit.

The subframe is going to require a notch taken out to let the gearbox sit a little lower. This will be strengthened up to make sure it still supports it all. That should allow the driveshafts to miss the subframe. It'll be tight but by jove i think it might just go! thumbup

Unsure on how the kit was fitted tbh, you'd need to check out the Exact 355 replica build threads, sure there will be some online.

Note the side on pic is photoshopped to sit at the right height because without an engine in it looks like a tractor. I'll be fitting it with some decent coilovers anyways but it is possible to get them sitting at the right height and have the suspension still work. All down to the quality and setup of the suspension though.

I'm still engine shopping. Went to look at one local but it wasnt running so I walked. Think we'll be going down the ahc route and keep money back for future mods.

I'll get sum time 2moro afternoon if its dry and get cutting the subframe.

Need to invest in a new welder methinks.

It's oot. Still looking for the right engine/car.

As it's the same block etc then will probably just go basic and upgrade further down the line.

Feel free to come swing some spanners if you're bored of waiting.

None at all. It's sitting on the drive waiting for an engine and time to spend on it. Think the garage will get built before this does.

C'est la vie.
