New motor time!

Following the sale of my Dodge Charger SRT....

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=14...

...... I fancied something along similar lines but with a bit more heritage and (slightly) more luxury. So after a relatively short hut and testing a few different cars (M5, RS3, RS5 and 2 C63's) I settled on this one.

The car has most options ticked, but most importantly 471 (LSD). It's pretty bad Merc changed their options to not include this as default, but I'm glad I found one that had it.

The car is 2014 model in Opal Fire Red (very rare in my part of the world). With the 507 black trinkets, I think it looks great.

It's a 1 owner motor and has covered just 48k km (just under 30k miles). Condition is very pleasing and it's been extremely well cared for.

Coming from a 470bhp 6.4 Hemi, on the test drives I wasn't completely blown away to be honest. However now it's in my hands, I am seeing a much bigger difference then first thought. Low down the two are quite similar but once above 5k, the Merc flies (sounds better too, but that's a given).

No real plans for the car. Debating what to do with the wheel colour. Seen a few online with black wheels and they set it off nicely. Not sure if that's a bit last year now though??

Anyway some pics

Oh, that’s nice. Love the red lick
Thanks.

I'm not usually a massive fan of red cars and almost ruled it out before viewing. Glad I did though and made up with it!

Very nice!

Love the red & keep the wheels silver IMO, too many black wheels these days & usually the preserve of the chav set.

They are also quite rare I think, so keep them original, I like them. Ha Ha at TSW venoms! Ironically the multi spoke AMG wheels on these are like the TSW Imola’s!

Great that you have the LSD. Please let us know how you get on with it.
Thanks for the comments.

Yeah I'm undecided on changing the wheel colour. Some look good (imo) but I'm not ready to go full on gangster!

The mileage and condition was always going to be enough for me, but when I checked the VIN and options, seeing it had LSD sealed the deal. I know a lot of those who have this car without it, wish they had it (or retro fit one).

Early Update

Car is bloody awesome, still looking for excuses to go in it!

With only slightly more power than the Dodge Charger SRT I had previously, I wasn't expecting much but in the real world it does feel a fair chunk quicker. Could be just new car syndrome and noise, but it certainly seems that way. The charger felt a tad better lower down though.

The noise is additive, I have to say. Any excuse to use the S+ or manual mode is usually taken, along with a massive childish grin. On this note, I have been pleasantly surprised by the MCT box in this car. I had read some stories that it wasn't the best, but to be frank its a massive upgrade on the old 5 speed auto in the charger. Shifts are smooth, fast and happen when I ask them and during these early days I haven't had any negative thoughts. Our other car has a DSG box (albeit on an older car) and I wouldn't say that's any better or worse.

Minor drawbacks?

Being a last of the line W204, it doesn't have the latest interior or tech but its still a nice place to be. The seats are immense, as is the whole driving environment. The infotainment is definitely where the design age can be felt, but the HK logic 7 sound system sounds great. I've read stories about the poor build quality / fitment quality of interior parts but in the most part I am all good. The main issue I found was electric window switches rattling on the drivers side door when listening to a bass heavy track....need to sort that one.

Fuel economy is at dodge levels, so no issue there, but the tiny fuel tank is a joke.

I'll swing by with some more pics and hopefully a video once I get my new camera.

Matt

Spent some time giving the car a good clean.

I was really happy with the way the paintwork looked anyway, but as with all new cars its always good to get your hands dirty and give it a good clean.

So it was rinsed and snow foamed twice (because my 4yr old son wanted some more bubbles on the car!). After the second snow foam, I was happy enough to take a new wash mitt to it and my son gladly helped out. After that a rinse, dry, polish, wax and seal!

Pretty happy with the results, but as I say, it was already pretty clean. I will at some stage take it for a machine polish and further paint protection.

Getting close and personal with the car uncovers some minor things you wouldn't usually see and I counted 2 scratches, 1 dent and 1 of the 507 decals is very slightly pulling away. Not too bad for a 4/5 yr old car.

We all love some pics, so here goes!

Gotta love a golden disc! On this note, all discs and pads were changed over in April 2018 so have loads of life in them (not a cheap job!).

Interior is a nice place to be!

My sons bucket seat!

So a week in doing the day to day stuff and all is well. As you can see I use it for the school run, and despite being a coupe, the rear space ain't all that bad and more than comfortable for my son. The boot is of a decent size, and overall despite being a much smaller car than the Dodge Charger, the usable space actually isn't bad at all. Someone did comment on my charger thread about how badly american cars are packaged, and I completely agree. That thing should have had much more space than it actually did!

Other plans are just to get tyres swapped over. I factored this into account when I bought the car, so got some discount. The continental sportcontact 5p are OEM fitment (as per my understanding), and Evo rated them top place in 2015. I know the game has moved on now however, so will be checking out my options. Tyres are 255/30/19 rear and 235/35/19 front, but some people play with the size options. To be honest I'll probably stick with the default for now, I have no complaints with how the car handles (its alot firmer than the charger was in track mode though!).

Other than that, I need to get handy at cleaning an alcantara wheel which is lovely I must add, and one of the wheels (in the pic above) has some light scuffs that ideally need sorting.

Thanks for looking!

Small status report!

It's been a while that I've had a car that continues to make a big impression on me after a few months of ownership. Usually by the, things settle down and it becomes the normal daily. Sure that's the case with this, but I still look for excuses to go out in in.

Recently shod the car with 4 new Continental Contisportcontact 5p. These are of OEM flavour and I can't fault them. My others were 2016's and were starting to become noisy and brittle. Wasn't cheap, but it's clearly made a massive improvement not only to the grip and handling, but also the comfort.

I also had a window switch replaced by Merc at no cost. It was rattling like a good one at any moderate volume levels, which was very annoying. All sorted after a 2 min swap over, and I'm enjoying limo levels of quietness when the mood wants it.

Have a service booked in about 4 weeks time which will be a normal Merc A service along with diff oil replacement. Not going to enjoy paying almost £1k for the privilege, but needs must.

Couple of shiny car park pics :-)

Small update!

I'm about 8 months into ownership and all is going well. I had a minor wobble and thought I wanted to sell it for something a little more casual, but then quickly realised I was being stupid. Baby number 2 arrived this month, and I thought perhaps being a bit more sensible with the motor of choice was in need.

In reality, we already had a family motor which my wife used (Audi Q5). We'd all use that during the weekend, so no real need to be too sensible with my own choice. Added to that, the C63 is more than adequate in the back for the school run for my 4yr old (in fact he loves it).

After becoming a family of 4, we soon decided that the Q5 wasn't the best size for all the crap we cart around, so I sold that and bought the Mrs a 2015 Ford Explorer Sport. It's actually a really decent motor with all the bells and whistles. It's a 7 seater but in 5 seat mode as you can imagine it's huge in the back. I wouldn't call it fast but with a twin turbo 3.5l V6 pulling its heft around, it's not so bad. I'm on the lookout for some oem side steps for the car as I think these complement the look whilst also being useful.

Back to the merc, it's had a service quite recently and all is looking well, no dramas. There appears to be a bit of a panel gap on the rear bumper which I'll ask them to check next time around. It's not drastic, but my eyes nearly always land there. I've read it's relatively common on this era of merc.

I recently gave the race start a go (Merc Launch Control), and I'm happy to report it works really well. I had a similar system in my old dodge charger srt8 and it was utterly useless, spinning the wheels all the time. In the merc, it just seems to work and I'd hazard a guess its almost as quick as those figures suggest (0-60 4.1-4.3 depending where you read).

Anyway some fresh and clean snaps!

Just to update.

I recently had to shell out on some new rubber on the front. I was particularly annoyed about this, given the existing tires were only 8 months old at the time. Turns out my trusted garage failed to do the alignment on them when it was last in, and thus they became noisy and were wearing unevenly.

In any case, the tires were still perfectly ok but ok isn't good enough. I set to and had the two fronts again replaced with Continentals, along with alignment. I also replaced the two front stabilizer bars replaced which were looking a bit tired.

The garage admitted that they usually would wait for the customer to ask for alignment to be done, but given I was a long term customer should have known that after spending a fair chunk of cash on new rubber that I would have done the alignment too. Anyway, they did the alignment FOC and also knocked me off some labor costs.

One thing that became apparent though was just how awkward it seemed to get this car properly aligned! On their first attempt, the computer was completely happy, the correct car and settings were used but somehow the steering wheel was still off center. Few attempts later and they nailed it!

In new news! The car is likely to be moved on soon as we plan to move on from the UAE within the next year to go to Spain. I'm toying with the idea of getting it shipped there but in the interim I have purchased a wee run about.......step up the MK6 GTI!
