Mercedes 190e 2.0 1992
Discussion
Morning all. I'm a prolific PH reader, but rare poster. My Dad recently gave me his car, so I thought I'd share it on here.
It's a 1992 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.0, which we've had since new. It was used as a daily until around 2005, after which it was retired and left on the driveway with around 60,000 miles on the clock. The car has been used very sporadically over the past 14 years, but has mainly spent long periods of time untouched. Safe to say, it was in a pretty sad state when Dad gave it to me last month.
The car is a base spec 190e, and may not be worth a lot, but it means a huge amount to me as it was the car that I effectively grew up in. I've spent more time on the back seat than I have behind the wheel.
I really wanted the car to play a part in my wedding at the beginning of July, so I sent it off to be partially restored/detailed. The results were amazing, so I thought I'd share them here.
Before:
During:
After:
Original first aid kit:
There are quite a few bits to still sort out, but I'm really happy with how the car is now looking. Safe to say, it now lives in a garage, under a cover.
On the to do list:
Remove tow bar
Replace front seat storage nets
Replace front grille plastic
Replace/fix sun-warped door cards
Cheers!

how is it mechanically?
Pretty sound. Started first time after being sat for four years (with a bit of a charge). Clutch was stuck and a brake was binding, but that's it. It still is a very nice place to be, especially on the motorway. It's quiet, and wafts along gently without feeling hurried.I need to sort out the throttle body as I had to replace one of the springs a few years back (they snapped, causing the throttle to stay open). The spring tension isn't right, so the car surges under acceleration. I might need some specialist help for that one.
The bonnet soundproofing has also disintegrated (common problem), but you can pick up new proofing quite reasonably.

You're a lucky guy (or gal of course!) being gifted such an honest, timeless car OP. And evidence of a cracking detailing done there!
Thank you. I'm looking forward to keeping the car for many years. My detailer did a fantastic job. He treated the car in the same way as the £1m+ cars that he also works on. He is Winchester based - DM if you'd like to know his company name.

Great stuff OP. They are brilliant cars. I too was taken to school in a 190 on alternate days - in this case a white 2.5D. The smoothness of it all just seemed so advanced of anything that my family could afford at the time!
Just got back from Portugal. Lots of battered 190Ds over there.Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
