It’s been busy at work recently so I’ve been doing a lot of overtime. What does any self respecting PH’er do when they have some spare cash? Buy a car they don’t need of course!

I had a budget of around £1000 so plenty of sheds to choose from. As my current car is a Skoda Fabia with various bits to make it suitable for track days I decided a barge would be nice to go with it. I looked at various mercs(too rusty), BMW’s (knackered), Rovers (not that much choice other than 75’s) and Lexus LS400’s (too expensive to insure).

Eventually I decided to go and look at this;



It’s a Peugeot 607 2.0 HDI. Never in a million years did I think I’d buy one but it caught my attention for a few reasons. It was cheap, it hadn’t done millions of miles, it is loaded with kit and had seemingly been looked after by the single previous owner. Reviews on the internet were surprisingly positive and google searches of common problems didn’t turn anything disastrous up.

A quick inspection on Tuesday morning showed it to be a decent car. It drives as it should, the bodywork whilst not perfect is pretty decent and a lot of marks will polish out with the DA. A full service history with the cam belt done less than 8,000 miles ago. 4 matching Michelin tyres and decent life left in the brakes.

Downsides were, a chipped windscreen but it went through the MOT, it needs a good clean, missing mats and a broken fog light lens. It sounds like a transit van which isn’t surprising but it’s not my favourite noise either.

Now for the kit in this thing. Previously I’ve never taken any notice of the 607 other than the car chase in the first transporter film. I was surprised to find out how much they put in these cars.

Sat nav
Electric rear blind
Cruise control
Climate control (a/c doesn’t work currently)
Electric boot lid
6 cd changer
JBL Sound system with loads of speakers. I think 8 but possibly more.

I’m sure there’s more it’s hard to remember how much stuff there is.

After looking at it I decided it was worth a punt so bought it for £950 and after a few days I’m happy with it for the money. There’s a bit of tidying up to do but nothing major so I’ll have some fun doing that. As for using it I think it’ll become the daily driver and mainly be used for giving lifts home from work after the aforementioned overtime.

I’ll do a full update later when I get time. Unfortunately I haven’t got anymore pictures at the moment but will get some more.

So far I’ve bought a few things for it.

Oil
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Pollen Filter
Brake fluid
Windscreen wipers
Mats
Replacement fog lamp (surprisingly just £38.99 for an OE Valeo item)

To be fair it only really needed the fog lamp but I’d rather have the piece of mind knowing it is all ok. I pulled the old pollen filter out this morning, it was absolutely rammed full of leaves and other bits of tree. The inlet in the trim under the windscreen was all full of tree too. I’ve cleaned it all out and the new filter is now in. Unsurprisingly the fans work a lot better now!

Windscreen wipers were an easy fit and although the old ones weren’t knackered, these are much better.

The brake fluid was pretty dark so although I haven’t had time to do a full flush, I have sucked all the fluid out of the reservoir and replaced it with new fluid. I also flushed the clutch line out which has given the clutch and gearbox much better feel. I’m hoping to change the gearbox oil with the engine oil.

Tomorrow sees it go for an air con regas at kwik fit. I’m hoping it just needs gassing as there’s no obvious problems but we’ll see.

To drive it’s very soft! It just floats along nicely, although it’s a manual it’s still very relaxed and although I was initially looking for an auto I’m glad I got the manual. The seats are really comfortable although the black leather does get very hot in the sun! The engine sounds like an old transit at idle but once you’re on the move it’s pretty quiet. I like the engine, it’s not fast with just 136bhp but it has enough torque to waft along and is currently returning 42mpg with about 80 miles of stop start driving round Leeds. I expect this to climb over the weekend when it’s going to spend a lot more time over 30mph. It’s much more relaxing to get in at midnight when I’m going home than my Skoda which is a bit to stiff for some of the roads I go down. Wind and tyre noise is very quiet most of the time although this does highlight some of the squeaks and rattles coming from the circa 2006 phone holder wedged down the side of the radio controls. YouTube shows this should be an easy fix.

I believe it’s the executive trim level but I’m not sure what the differences are.

Today has been a good day. I got the air con regassed this morning at kwik fit. I was surprised for 2 reasons, firstly the service from kwik fit was good and secondly it works! Lovely cold air makes it much more refined than driving around with the windows open.

Firstly some pics of the interior;

I took the old handsfree kit out. It took a bit more work than I expected but the car seems to come apart in a logical way. The air con controls just pop out then various torx screws hold the rest of the trim in place.







My googling found it’s a common issue that doors can drop on their hinges. Mine was fine but I found one of the bolts was back out so I tightened it back up.



I should have got more pictures of the outside but I forgot. I’ll get some at some point probably when I’ve given it a wash and polish.

I don’t know much about them having only taken an interest a few days ago.

They were sold 2000-2008 with a facelift in 2004.

Comparing it to the Skoda it’s much quieter apart from the engine although once moving it’s not that noisy. You don’t feel every little bump and it’s much more composed over bad roads as you’d expect.

Yesterday it did about 140 miles over a mixture of roads with no issue. The headlights are good and the rear blind is pretty handy on dark motorways making looking in the mirror bearable. It actually handles reasonably well. Let the body roll then get on the throttle and it’s pretty amusing to throw around. Steering wheel is a better size than the massive wheel in the Fabia.

Last night I had a go in a new Volvo S90. I’d say the Peugeot is probably as quiet inside which surprised me. Unsurprisingly the Volvo is the better car.

Overall I’m enjoying it so far.

More work done yesterday and it seemed to go reasonably well other than I look like I’ve been self harming due to the amount of time with my hand in the front bumper.

First off was an oil and filter change.



This went pretty smoothly. Everything came apart nicely which was good. There’s a big bracket over the top of the oil filter housing which needed to be removed but that was easy enough once I worked out how. It took the whole 5 litres to fill back up. The old oil was black but nothing of any concern.

Next up was to investigate why the headlamp washers don’t work. I can hear the pump but nothing was wet. A look around the car revealed this;



Bearing in mind it was dry yesterday a wet wheel arch wasn’t a good thing. I needed to take the liner out to get to the fog light anyway so I got it out and found this;



Which should have been attached to where the other end of this pipe still is just above the rusty metal part;



After a long time cutting, pulling, undoing one of those stupid crimp on clips I got the broken piece off and reconnected it up. Now I’ve not tested them yet but I expect them to work unless there is an electrical connection to the washers that I don’t know about. Can anyone tell me how they work?

Whilst the arch was out I managed to pull all this out from behind the wing;



Don’t worry the car was on jack stands as well as the jack. I’m amazed I didn’t find any rust behind the wing with all that in there but there wasn’t so I’m happy.

The other job was the front foglight which was what I first noticed when I looked at the car.



That wasn’t as hard to do as I was expecting but access isn’t great.



Again after much swearing dropping the screws that hold it in, it’s in and working.

That was it for yesterday’s work. Surprisingly the Skoda hasn’t been driven since picking this up. For normal daily driving it’s nice not having to worry about going over speed bumps, getting close to kerbs or getting doors dinged, it’s just always relaxing.

Got a bit more done in the morning. First was replacing some of the missing/broken clips around the car.

The clips were cheap at £6 for 200 of them in different sizes and aren’t that far off the original ones.

I’ve been dying to clean the interior since I got the car last week. Although most people get in the car and can’t believe how clean it is, I know it can be better. It didn’t come with floor mats and the ones I ordered got lost in the post so I’m still waiting for them. As I’m still waiting I thought I’d give the leather a clean as there’s quite a bit of it.

I think you’ll agree that they don’t look very dirty. After doing the drivers seat the cloth told a different story!



It’s not as noticeable in the pictures but after the seats aren’t as shiny.



Other jobs included putting some valve caps on all the wheels, cleaning the mucky fingerprints I put on the headlining when removing the handsfree kit and pulling mud out of the left hand inner arch as I had a feeling it would be the same as the other side, which it was...



I’ve done just under 500 miles in the car since last Tuesday which has shown how much mileage I end up doing that I don’t really take much notice of. My commute is 5 miles each way however I’ve done several miles picking up and dropping people off so they can help out at work. It’s done 42.8mpg at an average speed of 26mph so far which I think is pretty good given it’s spent most of its time doing town driving. I’m sure 50+mpg would be easy enough on the motorway.

Finally does anyone know of any parts fiche websites that do Peugeot’s? The wheel centres are all warped and the paint has gone crusty but I can’t seem to find them for sale anywhere.

I also wonder who would have bought a new one! Interestingly my dad bought a Honda Civic in 2007. The Peugeot was twice the price of the Civic! 12 years later and the Civic is worth more than the Peugeot, that’s how bad the depreciation must have been.

Add to that by 2006 it was a 6 year old design based on an even older Chassis. A 2006 Audi, BMW or Merc was definitely a way better car!

I do like the car but I couldn’t imagine paying a lot of money for it!

Yeah that’s the one. With VAT though it’s about £130 and it looks like they all do the same thing as I suspect they are hard to get off.

I have a couple of ideas;

Leave it as is although I don’t like the wheels looking scruffy.
Buy the centre caps and have the same issues plus my wheels will need refurbing.
Get some different second hand Peugeot wheels to put on without the silly centre cap. There’s a few I like and they’re not expensive but I’ll probably get them refurbed if I do buy some.

This era of Peugeot chassis would be significantly more inspiring to drive than the equivalent Audi or Mercedes.
To be fair to it, it does handle pretty well for what it is. Brake pedal feels much better than my 2016 Skoda even if it hasn’t got as much ultimate power.

Another update on the car. I’ve been doing odd jobs on a morning to slowly get the car back up to standard. First was vacuuming and cleaning the carpets. The drivers side as expected was the worst.

Before;



Once cleaned I put the new mats in I ordered off eBay.



The floor looks much nicer for some mats and the car smells fresher with the carpet being cleaned.

Whilst I was servicing the car at the weekend I noticed the rubber grommets that hold the engine cover on were all perished and falling to bits causing the cover to rattle.I ordered replacement grommets and fitted them this morning.



The drivers seat belt was slow to return. I googled it and there was a suggestion to spray them with furniture polish. I decided to use silicone shine as it smells nicer and it has done the job nicely.

Now I’m waiting for a day off work and some nice weather so I can give the outside a good clean and machine polish.

A quick question for those of you that have owned diesels. When cold, as in just started, it’s a bit hesitant at low revs and very light throttle. Not for long, maybe 30 seconds max. Give it more throttle and it pulls as normal. Is this normal given the engine is cold or is it indicative of an issue?

Not good, I’ll investigate that then. As I say, it’s only very slight for a few seconds but it is there. The rest of the time it drives fine with no issues.

I’ve been impressed with both the heating and cooling on this car. It’s miles better than my Skoda. The air con is cold almost instantly and it takes seconds to warm up. It also doesn’t mist the screen up for no reason like the Skoda which is a well known issue.

A bit of googling shows the hesitation to be caused by the EGR valve and is common across all the cars with this engine. I’ll work out the best solution.

I'd say that'll be ignoring it, they are a major pain to get to!
Seems that way given the videos I’ve seen! It’s not clogged completely as the engine runs fine other than those few seconds after starting it up. I don’t usually believe in all these sprays etc but it seems many have had positive results with Wynn’s egr cleaner, may be worth a go.

I’ve looked at the blanking plate and decided for not it’s not for me as it throws a check engine light. I am considering a remap so if I do then I’ll get the blanking plate then. Dave search for the blanking plate on eBay, there’s one seller that shows you where it goes and it looks simple.

In other news I’ve decided that I’m going to keep this car. I bought it for a bit of a laugh but I’ve decided that I prefer it to the Skoda as a road car, it’s much more comfortable in comparison. I’m going to get rid of the Skoda as it seems silly paying every month for a car when I’ve managed to get something that does all the same stuff for less than 4 months payments.

I’m going to pack in doing car track days for a bit. I enjoy them but it’s much harder on the car than I expected compared to tracking a bike. I’ll don’t think I’ll get a car to the right level on track that I’d be happy driving on the road and I don’t have the space to keep a track car that won’t move either.

I’m considering getting back into bike trackdays as although they’re more hassle, they’re more fun. I’ve now got a tow car too!

I opted to use wynns diesel egr extreme cleaner on the egr. It’s a bit of weird thing to use as you stand there for ages spraying it in the intake. Part of the instructions are to leave the car idling 10 minutes so I gave the engine bay a bit of a clean whilst I waited.

The results are positive. It certainly feels more responsive and is less hesitant when cold. I went out for a drive in it earlier and it felt good. Returned 49mpg compared to the 42mpg I was getting on the last tank.

Unfortunately the air con is leaking which I suspected when I got it regassed. Kwik fit reckoned it was all fine but clearly not. I’ll use the local air con guy I’ve used before to get it sorted as he really does know his stuff.

It’s booked in for a wheel alignment on Wednesday and I’m going to get the wheels balanced whilst I’m there as every so often the steering vibrates.

Not a great weekend for the car, after finding that the air con was knackered again on Friday, the interior fan stopped altogether. Fortunately it’s a well known issue on Peugeot’s it seems and will most likely be the motor resistor. I’ve ordered a replacement which is due today at £27 including next day delivery. I thought I’d give the local Peugeot dealer a chance as I’d have paid a bit of a premium if they had one in stock. They didn’t but they could get me one for £156! Mental!

The windscreen washer fluid bottle is still leaking. It appears to be leaking from the hole for the filler funnel and from the headlight washer hose. I think I’m going to try and use sealant around the filler funnel as that should solve any issues. The headlight washer hose looks like a piece of hosepipe cut to length so I’m going to buy some appropriate hose from the motor factors which should seal better. Once I’ve done that I’m going to unplug the motor for the headlight washers as they go through absolutely loads of water and make no difference to anything.

To be fair although these issues are a bit annoying they’re hardly disastrous and so far everything that I’ve wanted to fix has been cheap so I think I’m still doing alright.

In summary, french car lives up to its reputation.
