1966 Shelby Cobra 427 tool room recreation (DB427)
Discussion
Having an aluminium bodied recreation of a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 built by Dave Brookes.
https://db427.com/db427sc
I'm basing it on CX3049 below.
I've gone for the higher spec 580 bhp Southern Automotive 427 cubic inch side oiler.
Its now a few months off. It should go to the paintshop at the start of the year and then off for a tune/ set up.
Some pics below from today.

Some people are just plain greedy
Owned three Cobra replica's, a AK and two Rams along with a C Type , D Type and Lotus 11
all with serious running gear but nothing close what you are building.
That's what a Cobra should look like and the attention to detail,
I'm excited and it's not even mine

Thats interesting about your Cobra history. I owned an AK too which is what really developed my interest. Pic below. I bought it like that.

Having eclectic taste my interest are all over the place from Austin Seven's ,hot rods and yanks too Italian stuff,
Like you i find it difficult to be content with one type of car,it's like having a incurable desease
That's one good looking AK, Has that no nonesense period serious race look about it with it's low stance, black side pipes and wheels,
and what looks like a black interior, that and the 1966 plate and painted cam covers could be mistaken for the real
deal, More pit lane than wine bar, Nice change from the powder puff glitzy replica's i see about.
Its good I think to have well chosen variety. Like you i find it difficult to be content with one type of car,it's like having a incurable desease

I can't take any credit with the way the AK looked, the previous owner Lee Marshall spent a lot of time, money and energy getting it right ... even the oil stained engine

Superb effort, look forward to more updates!
Even cooler because of the period 'side oiler', i've wanted a 63 1/2 Galaxie Fastback for years so appreciate the costs involved in getting a side-oiler outputting >500bhp vs. a custom build on a small block. Will have a Galaxie with a 427 Cammer lump in it one day... Best of luck with the Cobra!

I don't know about that, you seem to have a free hand so far but better not push your luck.
Having accumulated two ex's i don't have that trouble anymore but since my daughter has moved
back in i do get that look every time i screw a American hub cap or number plate on the wall.
She says the house is looking more like a American dinner every day.

Oh you mean princess blue! I have a picture of a 427 in that colour on my garage wall. I wanted to get mine done in that colour but changed my mind to guardsman blue as that's original to the 427. My e-type is painted in a similar looking colour. Done brookes does 289s as well you know!

Thanks Jonny. I always wanted a black 427 and that was the original plan, but it looks so good as bare aluminium, I’ve decided to keep it as is for the moment.
I’m the second owner of the car, having acquired it from JZM Porsche. I went in to get an exhaust fitted and had a few hours kicking around whilst they fitted it and RAK1T was for sale having been part exchanged - the rest, as they say, is history.
Looking at the first owner history, there wasn’t really much to do once it came back from Dave’s. In my ownership I had a plumbed in Fire Extinguisher and electrical cut off fitted and would recommend you do that before it all comes together - bit if a pig of a job if not. The only thing that has gone wrong was a distributor cap failing but I managed to limp home - just carry a few spares on the electrics side now and all is good. I also got mine serviced and the carbs sorted at Thunder Road and the car has run like a dream since - I’d use either them or Uniclip Automotive/Bill Shepherd Mustang for any servicing.
There’s nothing really quite like these cars - given everything is interchangeable with the originals, I look it as I’ve managed to get an exact copy of a Cobra for about a 10th of the price.

Thank you for all the good points. On the plumbed in fire extinguisher is there a reason you decided to do this? I spoke to Dave and he hasn't been asked to do one yet. It does look good in bare aluminium .. I may try it for a while.

Yes that's the colour, think it suits the 289 narrower shape ,add the yellow stripe across the arches and period decals
and your back in the 60's,
The one i missed belonged to Alex Buncombe the Bentley GT works driver and Blancpain endurance pro-champion.
Garage had the Cobra on sale or return for months and he was getting fed up with them messing him about,
Redline gave me his tel no to deal direct , we arranged for me to go to his house to view and on the day he was collecting it
they took a deposit, then took weeks to pay him, after a month he had no money or car and it was in the new owners garage
somewhere up north so neither of us were happy, There is video's and photo's on his face book or instergram but not the
pale blue car of DK's. no 21 Was a while ago so not sure if still on there.
What E Type have you got , owned E Types since i was 19 , lost count how many i had ,first 3.8 cost me £480 ,mot'd and taxed,
went well but didn't stop but it was my first E Type..
Just sold my Coombes MK2 resto-mod with a 4.2 engine with all the right bits as run out of room under cover,
Even toyed with the idea to demolish the house replacing it with aircraft hanger but that may be a step to far even for me.
Thats very interesting RR and what a nightmare on the 289 for all.and your back in the 60's,

My e-type is a series 1.5 FHC. Originally from the sunshine state and fully restored a few years ago. Early in its life it had a series 1 bonnet added. Its been upgraded with ..
Adjustable alloy dampers
Vented front disks & 4 piston front callipers
Uprated rear brake callipers
5 speed gearbox
Electronic ignition system
High torque starter motor
Aluminium radiator
It drives and stops well. In the recent trip in Barcelona it cruised happily at 80 to 90.

The only thing that spoilt the 1.5 was those open headlights, looks like
you've taken care of that, Good to here you use your cars ,just deciding which one
One of the best colours for a early E Type , never liked gold but quite partial to
golden sand with the dark tan or red interior, very period.
Funny enough my MK2 was the same colour as your E Type with similar uprades ,
There was a series 1 4.2 F,H.C in Historics auction in the same silver blue ,
looked in lovely condition with fitted luggage ,a nice touch i thought,
Not sure if it sold or not,
P5BNij has put a couple of photo's of the 289 FIA Cobra i missed on the American forum
"Why so high" thread if any interested to you.
