Thanks for the comments ... I personally don't like the tinted rear windows either but I believe they come from the factory like this and the tints can't be removed?

Yep .... it's just had a bottom end rebuild due to No. 4 Big end failure 2 weeks after entering the country!

I'm aware of the fuelling issues and plan to get it mapped on UK fuel a.s.a.p.

80k and just under £5k ... the mileage was a bit higher than I'd hoped but my theory is the re-built engine should give some confidence!

I have owned 5 Impreza turbo's over the past 10 years and have a far bit of technical knowledge of the fuelling that they need.
In japan they have 100 octane pump fuel, as I assume you know we only get 97-99 octane. The import scoobs dont like running on normal unleaded as it causes pinking/detonation and can destroy engines pretty quickly as I found out!
When using octane booster it brings the octane rating up about 2 points to match the japanese fuel.
I had a knocklink sensor fitted in the type r and when running normal unleaded it used to flash up warning me of pinking under hard use but with the octane booster no warning lights displayed no matter how hard I was pushing it.
This was using proper Millers Oils Octane booster none of the rubbish that halfords churn out.

I think I already know the answer to my question but I'll ask it anyway for piece of mind. I driving my car VERY softly until I get it mapped [under 4k and no full throttle] ... assuming I stick to this its not really possible to get detonation damage is it? My understanding is detonation usually occurs under sustained full load at high revs?

Your right, driving like Miss Daisy will be fine although its a nightmare when its so short geared eh?! Just keep it off boost and short shift unil you get it mapped/run in.
Detonation usually only shows up when your really ragging it.

Yes it is a nightmare … it’s restricting my top speed to about 60 / 65mph!!

I'm using Tesco 99 anyway ... but using octane booster would soon add up to the same price of getting it remapped!
