I have been meaning to do one of these for a while however over my 4 years of driving i didn't have anything of note that could be included. This changed yesterday when i picked up my 07 plate BMW 335i M-Sport.

My first car was this 206, all 60bhp of it!

It served me well over the 18 months and 20k that i put on it and allowed me to get over some of the things that happen to all 17 year olds. I got rear ended twice....oh-er! (£3k a time in repairs!)

In my first year of university i bought myself an Astra Sporthatch. I ideally wanted the 1.9 SRi with the exterior pack however the insurance quotes i was getting at 18 were laughable (4k!) which lead me to get the 1.7 SRi (non-bodykitted) with the still astronomical insurance cost of £1500. I picked it up with 6k miles on the clock. It was all going well.

  • sorry only photo's i have were when selling it

The astra cost me buttons to run over the 3 years i had it, taking the mileage up to 85k. all it ever needed was diesel, tyres and routine servicing. At the end of last year i gave it to my dad to use for business and ended up using his racing green Jaguar S-type 2.5 V6 sport plus to run around in. I loved it (although i did get some odd looks at 21). The correct wheels are driven and it felt so much better put together than the astra i had before.

  • pic's of the Jag coming ASAP

However earlier this month the astra was experiencing warm starting problems (suspected crank sensor) in addition to this it seemed the injectors were on the way out and all of the brakes (all original even after 85k) were shot. With a rather annoyed dad i took the astra back and had to replace it.

When looking for the replacement i was considering the 120d, octavia VRS and a diesel s-type however the problems with the diesel system in the astra and the exhaust tone of the Jag made me want a petrol. My dream cars at the moment are either a VXR8 or M3 however they wouldn't work due to running costs. I took the 335i out with the premise of 30mpg and LPG able and it really shifted. it had more than enough power whilst remaining relatively discreet. It was the perfect compromise and i told myself i had to have it.

Its a 335i E92 M-Sport with a few options. metallic silver with the black leather interior. The running costs aren't too bad either: i am averaging 30mpg and insurance for me at 21 is £850....the tyres and tax on the other hand are appalling!

The car

Some proper photo's will be taken in the next week by a friend with a good SLR however here is one from this morning

Only plans for the future are a LPG kit, although i am considering changing the wheel colour to gunmetal (once my dad has kerbed them sufficiently which wont be too long, judging by his car)

£850 insurance at 21 years old on an 07 335i? That's very cheap.

How have you managed that?
I just added it to my multi-car to replace the astra and they only wanted an extra £250 for the next 10 months cover 9the astra was £540 for the year...i was surprised as anybody as i expected £1k+

You still at uni?
And a new Astra when at uni, I thought you were all supposed to be skint wink . When I went all I could afford (working at the weekends and one evening) was a mark 1 Fiesta 1.1.. This is going back a bit and the insurance was 200 quid.

Apart from that congrats on the new car, and that insurance is cheapo (dads company?)
I graduated last summer and am now working, very hard. I payed for it all myself and the insurance is through my multi-car policy and in my own name

i got the astra as i worked all my way through uni, 24 hours a week term time and 40+ hours over all holidays. It helped as the job was very good and i was a supervisor and not just a body. As i'm into my cars they are my extravagance, at uni i lived of strongbow black, tennants super and value voddy...save in some areas spend in others!

Nice car, but if I was you there is no way I would give it an LPG conversion, what you save in fuel costs will be far outweighed by what you would lose on the resale of it!
fair point, i bought it to run for quite a while, the other problem is the mileage i do (looking like +20k a year) it would really help with the fuel costs as i doubt they are going to go down any time soon

Who're you insured with? I'm paying just shy of £1200 on an 18 year old 325i!

ETA: At 22, with five years NCB and living in a good postcode.

Also, your car looks lovely.
Thanks, as i said above i have it added to my multi-car policy with admiral. I have had no fault accidents but living a decent post code and having both parents added as named drivers (one is a driving instructor) definitely helps. The other thing is that i have been using the Jag for the past 6 months, a decently powerful RWD saloon must mitigate the risk some what as well. The strange this is i am additional driver on that (my dad's car) and the premium is more than the 335i (£900 pa.) - some things just don't add up some times

Lovely car. If my dad curbed my M Sport rims, I'd give him a slap and tell him to pay more attention.

Well done on insurance. Proper result. I'm 30 and paying £1050 for my 330i M Sport Saloon. Mine does include business use, so I'm guessing that must push it up a bit. Oh, and I live about 3 miles from Peckham...

Also good work on the MPG, I'm getting about 20MPG out of mine. London commuting isn't brilliant.

I bet all of your pals are envious as fook at your age!
Enjoy!
They are indeed....i have to laugh at the above post as i did a tiny bit of kerbing in the work car park earlier....oops....anybody know of a good re-furber in the orpington/NW kent area?

Nice car, but why did you not go for a 335d/330d if your worried about fuel costs?

Can you even lpg a direct injection engine?
The astra i had before was a nighmare, sounded like a tractor and the injectors and EGR gasve up the ghost at 85k negating all fuel savings so am wary of diesels now (i have also grown fond of the V6 in the jag i was using for the past 3 months)

I have spoken to a load of LPG converters and they say its perfectly possible and fine to do.

Any more specific info please ? Would they still need some petrol flowing through all the time, increasing the payback time? Would appreciate it if you could PM me contact info the said converters too and info on prices that you have been quoted/ballparked. Everything I have seen mentions that it is not possible to convert a direct injection engine as yet.

It is only worthwhile doing it if you are going to keep it for a fairly long time, or it is already a high mileage vehicle.

I am considering getting a new car and haven't quite decided which model to go for. I do about 1300 miles per month, so it might be worthwhile for me to consider a conversion.
Arun autogas (would link but the imac has decided it won't copy and paste anymore) quoted around the £1800 mark although i had quote from others that were slightly lower at £1600 odd...the companies name escapes me though. I did double check over the model as its is the 335i and they said it would be fine.

From talking to my dad now it seems to be likely that it won't be converted but instead his S-type will be as he was the one doing the mileage.

Are you sure they meant the E9x 335i ? There are E30 (I think) 335i cars which are easily converted - I only ask again because having been round a few Google searches, I still have not found a direct injection BMW converted.

OK - Found some evidence of some direct injection engines which can be converted, but not the BMW 335i

i think it would be, i gave them the model and age of the car and they said it was ok, weather it was sales staff as opposed to actual fitters that said this i'm not too sure
