Is now the time to buy an early 996 or 997 carrera?

All 911s have gone through the doldrums, ask anyone into the marque for long enough & it really isn't that long since a 993 was simply neither classic nor modern, a 964 a leaky old thing, impact bumpers another 80's throwback & even 2.7rs' just old thrashed old race cars.
But an early 996 with the dual row IMS? There are very few mint ones out there & at £15k give or take are they really half a 964?
We all know the engine risks-but look at how many air cooled cars are advertised with engine refreshes & you start to wonder if it's really that much different.

Had a similar thought yesterday.
SC, 3.2 and 964 were all unloved against the 993 when the 996 was the emperor's new clothes.
Now 996 is the unloved car (and 997.1 are coming down).
With the move to PDK, electronic aided and possibly turbo 4 pots the future could be rebuilt 996/997's.
Watch this space.

Almost pulled the trigger recently on a 3.4 996 C2 manual (similar to my very first 911), great cars in my opinion. Think the early 996 on original rims and with ambers is looking good now aesthetically and price wise. RPM just sold a minter for around £17k, Darren's personal car, very nice. I went for a 997.1 C2 (3.6) in the end as have had a few 996s and also have 996.2 GT3 in garage. 997.1 C2 is a lot of car for the money, cheap insurance and loves to rev. Pick her up next Saturday after rims are swapped for Carrera Classics!

I've never seen a really rusty one and at 15 years old you would expect a few?
Perhaps we could hijack this thread into a "post your rusty 996 pictures" theme.
It would be different as I am bored with RMS,IMS, D Chunk bore, burnt Teflon death stories................ even if they are all true?

I don't usually like white cars, nor aero kitted 996s, but it somehow works with the turbo twists-oh & the one lady owner & low miles just needs gingers fitted!

I'm still weighing it all up slodge, no eBay bidding just yet! Thing is, as much as I think a great next car would be a GT3 or a GTS it's a lot of money tied up in one car.
For less money, i can get a 996 or 997 with a large contingency fund, money in the bank & I get to keep the GP.
But.....
Would it be a half measure against the air cooled alternative?

993's - Money Pits. End of. Been there, had four nice ones.
Now looking at early 996 or early 997.
Impartial advice from HONEST Porsche Mechanic mates : "996's (apart for the Turbos) are st. 997 C1's, the same. Both made with inferior parts, all will have engine problems at some time or another and underside, they're all rusty. Both will cost you a fortune. Stay clear unless you have unlimited funds to repair."
Good enough for me. A shame I don't have that sort of dough in reserve.
We all have friends who have 996's and 7's who haven't had a problem.

Not sure but think this car may of been silver as that's what the pistonheads advert states if you scroll down the advert. Possible wrap or respray?? My 2005 997 2S with 60000 on the clock is probably worth £20000 or thereabouts.
It's in perfect condition, has reversing sensors, heated seats and PSE.
Apart from scheduled servicing , road tax, insurance and petrol it has required the following in nearly ten years,
Battery
Clutch
Cooling Fan Motor
It averages around 22mph and costs me less than £250 a year to insure.
Even though it was registered in March 2005 it has the upgraded IMS bearing, something I discovered when I had the new clutch fitted.
I intend to keep it indefinitely so if and when it needs an engine rebuild I won't begrudge spending the money.
It's a fantastic car and it still will be in ten years time so I think it's a great time to buy one of the last 996s or an early 997.

997.1 is a fab car. And mine has cost me a fraction of what my air cooleds have cost me to keep on the road (993 to 70 2.2s, and most in between). 993's - Money Pits. End of. Been there, had four nice ones.

Honest opinion? If you want an event - on a shortish trip - go air cooled. But if you want a great daily driver get a 997 (996 doesn't look right to me). And buy post 2006 . Potential 997 owners spend too much time worrying about stuff that will probably never happen, while air cooled guys conveniently forget the fortune they spend on annual up keep.

You drive you pay for your pleasure, either way cars need money spent on them. Your money your call find a car, you are happy with and makes you smile.
I am happy to spend it on the upkeep on my car.

The comments about rust are laughable really.
And I doubt the 996.2 has much further to fall, £10-12k for a decent one with a few miles, though a lot more for a low mileage Carrera 4S.
Been saying for a long time that these are a bargain and will rise in value, or at least hold steady. Turbo models already seen some rises.
