A certain 'pearly' acquaintance of mine is on the cusp of securing a last-gen SL500 from one of PHer's eminent Overlords.

Hewn from the traditional material in the time honoured fashion, this car exuded a contemporary charm and quality that defined and established a Germanic order that permeated the psychology of a generation or three and today, alienates the unwashed with an equal effect.

Duly inspired by the concept of this punt, I was moved to contemplate my long time GT honey, the venerable 928, particularly the last of line GTS.

There are myriad reasons to own one of these but what I'm interested in, not having paroused things for some time, is what one might expect to fork out for a good example?

Also, could eminent members furnish this miserable thread with a plethora of appropriate pictorial joy?

Humble Oinkitude.

I do recall seeing a 40k miles late '94 car, dark metallic blue in recent months up for 23k pounds....I really think this is about as high as you see them priced.

I would be tempted by a 1990/92 GT which fall in the 10-13 grand range......saw a metallic black one last night.....it just looked menacing in a subtle way..if that makes sense?

They're lovely them 928s. However I agree with Paul and DeR, you need a nice late example that has been pampered. The GTS would be lovely to own, as long as it never broke or anything.

Who has some pics then?

Just noticed in the June edition of Porky Post..

928 GTS (auto) 1996 model year, slate grey metallic, marble leather and walnut. 64k miles immaculate condition. FSH with recent p-zeros, discs & pads + cambelt change. GBP 22k.

That is similar money one might pay for an E39 M5 ...
surely that almost deserves it's own thread

There is also a 95k miles '89G 928 S4 Gt for GBP 8.5k

Now that is extremely good value - RHD?????

The word is spreading about the quality of the GTS - it is indeed a truly fabulous machine IMHO. Good ones will always command strong money in the future and the GT has got to be a good alternative at half the money. Again, that model should hold at the £10k level.

The E39 M5 - looking massively good value for money. A lot of these seem to be coming onto the market at the moment and are heading towards the £15k bracket.

Der,

If I were you I would be looking at the 928 CS/SE or GT and not the GTS. True, the GTS was the last, most sophisticated, powerful and rubenesque 928, but a CS / SE or GT are rarer and would outsprint it in any situation.

The 928 CS / SE although rated at "mere" 320bhp hits the rev limiter at 6800rpm in 5th (180mph) according to Derek Bell, who used one from 1987 until 2005 as his daily driver. The CS comes with lighter exhaust system, lighter aircon, lighter seats, sound deadening and forged alloys. You also benefit from the stiffer springs and bilsteins combo. Currently there is one for sale at £15,000 on www.928.org.uk Only 20 odd have survived from the original run of 42.

The 928 GT is a development of the CS/SE, aimed at the UK market - all the CS/SE performance features, including the 330Bhp rev happy engine, and standart goodies like memory seats, sunroof etc... I have seen 181 on mine between Koln and Bonn in Ze Fazerland. Only around 1000 were made from 1989 to 1991. Expect to pay around £10k, but as much as £15k for an absolute minter.

The GTS is great, but it is just a touch to heavy for my liking...

Didn't Talacrest sell Bell's car recently? I remember it in 1987 at Le Mans parked next to Stuck's identical one when I blagged my way into the paddock to enjoy my one and only hot shower of the weekend!

Spot on - it sold for a rather large sum of money, but it was unique. Glad it went to an enthusiast too. It gets driven as hard as Porsche intended it for Stuck and Bell

As a matter of interest, how do 928s drive/handle in comparison to 911s and also 944s and 968s?

Also, how do they compare on running costs?

Faster

On a serious note - the 928 is very neutral in its handling. It is a heavy car, but once you get used to it, the car tends to shrink around you and feels agile and easy to chuck around. The manuals are a joy on a country road, the automatics less so, but still very tractable.

Of course it is not a 964RS or 968CS, but it was never intended to be a weekend play thing. It is almost schizophrenic in nature - a symphony of leather and woolen carpets mated to fully adjustable double wishbone suspension all round, transaxle, dogleg gearbox and a glorious V8...

Speed wise - I can keep up with most 911 (non-turbos) on A-roads without any problems. Over the ton, the 928 can show most of them a clean pair of heels - it was claimed at the time that only the 959 had more grunt than the 928CS.

Running costs are about the same as on a 911 and more expensive than 944/968.

I have been looking, 928 SE has the right description

www.928.org.uk/mambo/content/view/129/49/

but I don't want Guards Red, and bare metal respray on top of GBP 15,995 asking price would put the total bill into E39 M5 range

I agree that perhaps 23K is about as high as you're likely to get for a GTS.
A more usual figure is around the 18K mark.
Watch for high oil consumption issues- that only seems to afflict the 928 GTS. I don't know why this is, as AFAIK it shares the same bore size to the smaller 5 litre variants. May be the ring pack design is different...?
I sold my low milleage pampered if aging (1987) 928 S4 manual for around 8 K last year. It had the benefit of not having Cats so being better on fuel economy and sounding rorty!
