my 996 engine blew up.
Discussion
my 2002 996 engine blew up a few days ago... don't know what to do exactly. just angry. dealership techs say i need a new engine. just over the warranty limit, so... i didn't expect the engine to quit this early. four years and less than 60k miles! what a joke. performed all the necessary maintenances at 15k, 30k, 45k and never raced or anything like that. babied the car but this happened. porsche rep says nothing they are going to do. they are telling me to buy the same engine to put in. i am afraid of having the same problem again... made few calls around and was told this 996 engines are having a lot of problems. and that most owners are going into 4.0liter cyliner instead. should i???
My mates went at 16 thousand, camshaft failure on a o3 plate and its just cost him 12k to fix at jct in leeds, porsches contribution was a grand.
because he bought it privately and it was out of warranty needless to say they told him where to go.
I'm sure you can get it fixed for a lot less but then he did'nt really have much choice at the time.

I am not touting for business (we are booked up until the end of August), but it may help you or be useful for others to know that we have several spare good used 996 engines, rebuild options for a reconditioning an engine if a liner has cracked, new intermediate shaft bearings (not available from Porsche) and full rebuild facilities and a transporter for collection - but we are based in the North West.
We are undergoing road trials with an engine with a replacement liner to be made available shortly.
This gives our customers a great variety of options if and when a dissaster happens - but we obviously need to know what went wrong first. If we end up replacing an engine then we do not charge for us stripping down the old one to find out what was wrong.
Prices for minor options start around £2,500 + Vat and an average would be around £4,500 to £5,000 Plus Vat for a rebuild and parts. We will also consider buying a car with a damaged engine.
It may of course not be that serious as we have had a number of engines that were condemned "to need new replacement" which we managed to rebuild - for which our stock of good used spares is a great help.
We have not developed bigger bore kits because at the moment we have a serious concern about the capability of the big end shells and con rods to manage the extra power delivery long term - and replacing them as well adds up to serious costs again. We are more into simply returning the car to it's original pre-dissaster condition fo a reasonable cost.
You can contact me on 01204 302809 or auto@hartech.org or visit our web site www.hartech.org to find out more.
Good luck,
Baz Hartech

Surely you have to have a warranty with a Porsche? It's madness not to ?
Sorry dont agree, if you have a £45k car then yes, but the early 996's are now getting to the stage where they wont be able to get one & as baz had said indys can do full engine for £4500.
So unless 16.66% of engines go, spend the money on serviceing or even the hartech deal. £60pm.
hi and thanks for the replies. sure, one post by me but i just had this problem. no need to find out before this happened but now i am very interested about the porsche engines. i'm trying to learn as much as i can... yes. i am in us. and, the us porsche maintenance is 15k intervals...
i need some advice on rebuild vs. buying a new one!!! which way should i go??? rebuild to 4.0 L with steel lining and performance piston parts etc. vs. a new engine??? the cost i am looking at to do is the same. but, rebuild is still the old engine with old block and sensors but i gain 60 horse power and upgrade in parts and the numbers match etc. new engine may have the same problem in future but all new and much better warranty comes with it... i'd appreciate a constructive and informative advice. thanks.

sorry, i didn't know how to write the response to the quote... anyway, according to the techs, metal in oil. big chunks they say. they think bearings are all but destroyed. however, the engine is not opened to examine for the source. they are asking about 1500 bucks just to do that. and, i didn't want to spend money on the blown engine. i don't know what to do with this engine if i get a new one also...
