VERY QUICK ADVICE ON PURCHASE OF 928S4

HI THERE
JUST NEED SOME ADVICE ON THE PURCHASE OF A 1988 928 S4
IT SEEMS IN GOOD CONDITION GOOD BODY WORK... LOW MILAGE 78K... 3 OWNERS {ONE A FEMALE!!!}
BUT WHEN I DROVE IT THE ACCELERATION WAS NOT THAT IMPRESSIVE...
SOME HISTORY BUT HAS BEEN SITTING AROUND FOR A FEW YEARS AND ALL THE BIG BILLS ARE NOW YEARS OLD.
THERE WAS NO SIGN OF DAMP UNDER THE PASSENGERS SEAT SO I GUESS THE ELECTRICS ARE NOT DAMP!!
BUT THE WINDOW SWITCHES DO NOT WORK
BUT THE SUN ROOF DOES
THE WARNING LIGHT FOR THE BRAKES TURNS ON THE DASH WHILE DRIVING???
THE PORSCHE ALARM WAS REMOVED
AND FINALLY FOR SOME REASON THE BACK SEATS DO NOT FOLD DOWN??
BY THE WAY IT WAS MY FIRST TIME DRIVING A 928 SO ARE THEY IMPRESSIVE OFF THE MARK AS THIS ONE WAS NOT...
I DROVE MY BMW 635 AFTER AND IT SEEMED QUICKER??
HELP AS I WANT IT BUT DO NOT WANT IT SITTING ON MY DRIVEWAY....
AND IF I BUY IT AND IT GOES WRONG WILL THE BILLS BE HUGE!!
IM TEMPTED BUT MY GUT FEELING SAID WAIT AND TALK TO THE EXPERTS (IE YOU)... ALSO THE CAR WAS SOLD TO THE DEALERS FRIEND IN THE SUMMER AND WAS NOW BACK WITH THE DEALER??? AND HE SEEMED TO ALOOF AND KNEW THE PRICE WAS GOOD AT £5500??

First, www.928.org.uk
Second, it should go like a train. Find someone via the website local to you and see if they will take out out in theirs.
Thirdly, with some S4 cars available for under £4k, why spend £5.5k on one? Angus's site (as per url above) has an '87 S4 for £3750. Buy it and use the nearly £2k saving to pay for any work that needs doing!!!

A 928 S2 was not particularly quick of the line but an S4 should be. GT's and GTS's are quick cars. Bare in mind that they are 52 eletric motors inside the 928 cabin so be careful. Good luck but steer clear unless you are sure. Lastly and no offence intended but don't post in capital letters as often it offends people.

If it is underwhelming, there is probably a reason.
the achilles heel of 928s is the electrics, they are partially hardwired, phenomenally complicated, and somewhat temperamental. If the electrics are dodgy you are DOOMED. proceed with enormous caution.
Buy a 944S2. half the price. alomst all the fun

i've got a 635 and my old boy has a 928 S2, 928 eats the 6 for brekkies, sounds like a bit of a lame one. If it's been standing for ages it might just need a service or it might be a heap of trouble - they're not cheap or easy to renovate, lot more complex & difficult to work on than the 6. Guess if you get it silly cheap and don't mind plowing cash into it - it might be worth a gamble. They're great cars, pretty damn good at everything & hugely underrated. If you like the 6 you'll probably love a good 928.
well thanks to you all for your advice i think this car is not for me ... he reduced it by £500 yesterday... hope he is not reading this!!! but hummm...maybe he is and if we keep it going the car will eventually be worth buying ...

I used to have a BMW 635CSI 5spd in top condition. My first 928S2 4spd Auto absolutely murdered it performance wise. My current 928GT, which has been slightly played with kills E46M3s for breakfast, whilst my 928S2 5spd keeps up with them no problem, thus I think your example of an S4 is a lame one. Never buy the first one that you see - could be a very expensive proposition. On the other hand if you get a good S4/GT, there is nothing out there which can touch it for the money...
Hi. I have what I believe to be a rather good 928 for sale. It's about as late as they come for an S4 (1993) with just 61,000 miles (full history, old MOTs etc), drives very nicely (and quick too of course), all the electrics work fine and it flew through the MOT. Belts were last done at 54,000 miles too.
Given all the scare stories you're reading here, probably better to spend your money getting the best one you can rather than a "cheap" one and have to spend loads on it, which takes the joy out of it, means time off the road too and costs can spiral!

At a quick scan through it seemed to be a costly resurrection of an unused car needing a couple of control modules as well as new brakes (caliper, discs, pads etc), ignition, keys, full service inc transmission oil change, new oil pressure switch, HT leads, fuel lines, new rear tyres etc etc In total £3974.15 "worth"....

It is indeed Horizon blue. First sold by Merlin Nottingham and registered 1st Jan 1993.
Sounds like it may be of special provenance as it could be (one of) the last ever registered. I'll check it out when I get chance (may have to put the price up )
