Yeah, don't think that makes sense at all. Planning to keep a car long term isn't necessarily a primarily emotional decision. It could be a largely pragmatic approach to achieving a given end. The fact that you can't absolutely guarantee the future doesn't make it emotional to plan long term, either. That can be a fairly hard nosed and again pragmatic approach based on the balance of probabilities.
Pragmatically speaking, I'd have been far better off financially getting the first car rebuilt. But I moved in on and that was probably an emotional decision, ironically.
I think any Porsche related decision must be emotional in nature. Its hard to put forward a logical argument around a Porsche and say it is not emotionally motivation. A logical car decision would be related to safety, economy, environmental impact maybe etc etc etc. Not about how it makes you feel when you drive it. That's all emotional. But maybe that's just me. I am an emotional animal.Pragmatically speaking, I'd have been far better off financially getting the first car rebuilt. But I moved in on and that was probably an emotional decision, ironically.

Need to make a little space in the garage, Caterham and/or Lotus Excel will be coming up for sale shortly. Boxster incoming. More info in the coming days.
So the constant "what about this one" posts are about to be replaced by the "what's this" and "how do you" and "what tyres" posts.
Brilliant NewsSo the constant "what about this one" posts are about to be replaced by the "what's this" and "how do you" and "what tyres" posts.
Hopefully a good car and a good experience f or you too. When will we get some more details ... you tease?

This still feels like more teasing

He bought it
Thanks for the insight!Interested what he made of it after his first drive. The example obviously passed muster for the transaction. Whether he likes it or not after now having done 500 miles in it would think equally obviously is another matter. But this is the internet, so there's always somebody who wants to be difficult!
Sorry, pics to follow once I get it cleaned. Been raining here again this morning.
Yes do like it.
Few thoughts from the first 500 miles
Seat - (none sports seat) takes a bit of getting right, the wings tending to throw me forward from neck up. There's two levers one is back rake the other doesn't seem to do much on drivers side (passenger side works).
Driving position - wheel pedals seat all slightly offset (a pet hate of mine) but not too obvious. Would have liked the wheel to adjust up and down as well as in/out but knew they didn't before i bought it. The actual seating position is a little more "sitting up saloon" than sports seat where your legs are stretched out forward (TVR, Lotus, Caterham) but no bad thing as I used to roll out the Chimaera it was so low. I'm old.
Performance - Seems to go! Didn't push it beyond 70ish due to weather, old tyres and learning the car. Around 38mpg due to slow speeds and fear of running out of fuel near home with no filling stations open.
Brakes - are good, stop quickly. Handbrake excellent - another first for me.
Car dead stable (has stable thingy switch) but wanders a little on the crappy roads over 70mph. No worse than anything else and suspension thumps into potholes but it's a sports car. Overall impressed. Car likes the sweeping bends nearer home, rather than the M6.
Car is quiet except for a little wind noise. You can hear a whirring behind you rather than intake/exhaust. Might add sound deadening (yes really).
Air con works - first car I've had where it actually works.
Bit of lacquer peel on screen top, rest of car has seen spray gun (for lacquer peel odd scratches etc) Little bit here, little bit there - may a well do the lot.
The rear pop up spoiler has a tiny crack, almost invisible. Hood needs a recolour due to fading.
Was told by Nick that I need to replace the blue coolant cap as they fail - where's the best place to source these.
Will be looking for tyres 18" (sizes to follow) looking for suggestions - car is for road use, maybe possibly a hillclimb or two but living where I do something appropriate for wet roads.,
Right - off to give it a wash....

I'd try your local OPC parts department. I find they tend to be priced the same and usually can get parts (especially obscure ones not that this is) within a day or two.Yeah, the offset seat / pedals / wheel in the 986 is always a niggle when you haven't driven one for a while. But it's minor enough to mostly disappear after a bit, so doubt it will be a major issue long term. Surprised Porsche didn't get that right on the 9x6 cars. It's fixed on the 9x7.
Ditto the high seating position. Always want to be lower in a 986. 987 is a bit better, but 981 basically fixes that.

I have put a deposit on this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225128984724?mkcid=16&a...
Another example of a car where the spend outweighs it's value.
I wanted something interesting and this certainly fits the bill. Can't wait to hear the carbon airbox and full system at full chat

Looks like it has a lot going for it. I was drawn to this in the description though:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225128984724?mkcid=16&a...

'Don’t let any forum make you believe a Gen 1 3.4 litre Cayman/Boxster engine doesn’t need a full rebuild. Bore score is a massive issue with these engines and NO engine escapes undamaged. '
Is that true, does bore scoring affect all engines?

Had a wash.
Roof needs a recolour
There's a triangular "filler piece" on the offside headlight that has been brokene at some point & glued in. Migh replace but if I break the headlight in doing so....
Something I thought of this afternoon is the very narrow spacing between 1-2, 3-4 & 5-6. It's quite a nice change for a remote box but took me a while to get the up changes. The ratios are quite close and I sometimes couldn't decide if I was in 4th or 6th. Got it now OK but a few times tried to go for 7th.
Have to see where the nearest OPC is. Think there's an Indie Specialist in Stirling (86 miles away) but an OPC in Glasgow (98 miles away). Will see if they'll post one out.

Sounds like a nice spec car. If not already done I'd probably add uprated gearbox mounts a fresh engine mount and think about some nice dampers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225128984724?mkcid=16&a...

Odd comment from the advert. It’s well known that gen 1 Cayman / Boxster 3.4 is in the higher risk category.'Don’t let any forum make you believe a Gen 1 3.4 litre Cayman/Boxster engine doesn’t need a full rebuild. Bore score is a massive issue with these engines and NO engine escapes undamaged. '

Looks like this thread is just over 10 years old. I kinda remember 10 years ago, the most discussed car was 986, and still is? The average 986 was 5k 10 years ago, had a quick look at AT and it still seems to be the case
I still believe, irrespective of their flaws, they are great value especially now.
