RE: Porsche launches 911 Turbo
Discussion
The faster tip is primarily due to the Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG); they have also introduced the equivalent of a launch control system - and the different electronic components of the car are optimally harmonised with the tip 'box.
A very good technical explanation can be found here:

Whilst a Tip 'box may be quicker to 60, in reality the 0-60 chase is rarely done (and will hammer your engine components if it is) - and the manual will undoubtedly provide a purer and more involved driving experience. Porsche are the first to admit this - and advise on their site that driving enthusiasts stick with manual. Should you buying a Turbo if you are not a driving enthusiast? No - stick to a Carrera. So, the only tiptronic 'boxes out there will be driven by posers. Ouch.
The DSG 'box will come within the first 12 months of launch - and whilst it will far better than the 'tip it is coming under a bit of flack on other VAG cars, so a manual will always be the enthusiasts choice.
FYI the sunroof is standard - as is metallic paint and just about everything else on the Turbo, so there is no need to spend six figures (!).

996 TT manuals are far easier to sell than tips - and you will notice that the premium paid for tip is completely wiped (+ some) when it comes to resale. MANUAL.
The case becomes less clear with something like a 430 or an M3 - which both have great clutchless manual gearboxes which appeal to enthusiasts (though some will always swear by manual), but the Porsche tip box is very different technology and an enthusiast will always want to maintain control.

yes but surely when DSG becomes available on the Turbo, the Tiptronics will take a price hit and be more difficult to shift surely? IMO the manual won't be affected since the DSG will cost noticeably more in the first place so there will always be a price differential between the DSG and the Man version.
silver993tt - totally agree. Anyone who needs help shifting gears is definitely going to want the DSG when it comes out - so the tips will not be desireable - whilst those who feel they can change their own gears will always want manual.
SO - getting an early tip is the wrong thing to do.

Saying that, in the last few days ive screwed by back and developed sciatica... tip is looking nice at the current time :-)
Issues I'm struggling with are mainly whether to wait for the second trench of cars and hope to score for the DSG and X50, aerokit and sports exhaust options or to simply take one of the first cars.
If I do go for an early car it will be manual and I can't decide whether to get Basalt Black with BLACK wheels or Speed Yellow with BLACK wheels.

dealmaker - get an early car and take the manual, even the VAG DSG 'boxes are not quite living up to expectations and it's likely to be at least 12 months before the DSG box emerges.
A lot of spec decisions depend on which camp you belong to:
1) You're spending £100k so just go for the spec which the little boy in you is telling you to go for. Keep the car for a few years, really enjoy it and then take the depreciation hit on the chin like a real man when the time comes.
2) You're not that loaded and only intend to hold onto the car for a year or so (whilst values remain very strong) - and however long you want to hold onto it for you want to maximise resale. Go for a sensible spec which is easy to sell - which equates to Basalt, Meteor, Slate, Arctic (not Speed Yellow!) on the outside, black on the inside (not ruffled as it shows age), MANUAL, not too many options (as their cost is never recovered at resale and the base car is well specced). NO MODIFICATIONS - a standard car and IMHO this includes standard wheels.
Each one of us knows whether we are a (1) or a (2). Enjoy!

OK - I did not see half the options on the online configurator for the TT. I was using the beta release of Microsoft's new IE and it does not display the menu on the bottom right which contains 90% of the options. BEWARE if anyone is in the same position! This made me feel a little hastey in my earlier comment that there is no need to spend >£100k, so I put it to the test and specced my dream car:
Meteor Grey Metallic £ 0.00
Leather interior in black £ 0.00
ParkAssist £ 325.00
Sport Chrono Package Plus £ 1,015.00
Sport shifter £ 380.00
Stainless steel tailpipes £ 175.00
Sports seats £ 0.00
Floor mats £ 112.00
Thicker three-spoke sports steering wheel in smooth leather £ 138.00
This includes standard spec such as tracking system, Bose, PCM (nav) etc.
...AND by sheer coincidence this price out at £99,985 OTR. This is a well specced car - the only option that I couldn't find which I would like is a Bluetooth phone module (NOT the annoying SIM-swap system).
