993 Engine failures ?
Discussion
Any meaningful discussion of engine failure rate HAS to involve some proper number and some real hard facts backed up with real life evidence.
So on that note ....
total 993 production, 68,000
total 996 production, 176,000
total 997 production, 216,000
997 engine failures, one a week reported on the forums
996 engine failures, one a fortnight reported on the forums
993 engine failures, one a year reported on the forums
So even accounting for the build numbers, its plainly obvious that the 993 is far far more reliable

Well if we're getting into semantics, what do you term a failure ? So on that note ....

An IMS failure on a 997 is a very different kettle of fish to a through bolt seal failure on a 993 . . . . .
Sure someone having a stir , as we have run a standard 993 engine in our GT2R without knowledge of its history although we used RSR cams and thus a top end rebuild , in the 24 hours last year as well as a 3 and 4 hour race this year with no issues. This included a few recorded visita to 8,200 RPM which were not ideal.
Air cooled Porsche engines bulletproof PERIOD.

Experience has taught me otherwise -sadly. But take the best bits from the air and water cooled engines and add them together as in the Mezger units and you do get bullet proof. Air cooled Porsche engines bulletproof PERIOD.

My Datsun GTR has now completed 15.5k miles without an engine failure despite the much higher power output. Porsche eat your heart out!
I did have to buy 4 new tyres the other day - only 1200gbp fitted though - its almost like Datsun ownership is becoming semi-affordable double whammy......haha
I am looking forward to new discs and pads already. Now that it will only cost 2.5k though - it will just devalue the car making it affordable for the Porsche-driving masses.... damn.
But seriously - engine failures are quite rare on the aircooleds - but rebuilds are not. There is a difference you know!
