unfreindly porsche owners

ok, i'll admit, i don't tend to bother with boxsters/996s/cayennes. Used to wave at 986/996 but never got a response.
What shocks me is how many 924/968/964 drivers don't wave or flash back! Funnily enough 944 & 928 drivers always seem to have a smile and a wave, as do most 993 drivers and all pre-89 911 drivers.
Sorry if this is a sweeping generalisation, all just my experiences around Berkshire...
VS
I'll go along with that, never bother with 996s, but from 993s and below I always have a quick flash....nurse the screens!!
Do you know what really annoys me though...Those ignoramuses that assume that because you are driving a porsche you may have mental issues/size of penis issues/ early onset or inability to accept being middle age...
Must be my choice of cars, the other is a BMW where people assume that I am a tw@...
Had to get that off my chest...I will still wave at fellow porkers.
And breathe....

I have always said that I will explore the griff/chim route, then when I can eventually afford it a 993.
Lovely lovely cars all of them. It does get a bit tiresome in the BMW, not that I drive like an idiot, but being a 540 at least it has poke a plenty when someone is behaving like a neanderthal.
Funny old world though isn't it.

Mike,
Sell everything else, buy a 993. Cheap to maintain (seriously) and glorious.
Having had 28 cars in 11 years, i can honestly say that getting into my second 993 was like coming home. If i drive a 993 every day for the rest of my life i won't be disappointed if i never buy another car again.
Strange but true.

Would you say that I need to try a griff, or dive headlong into 993 ownership.
I have always loved both cars, but are obviously poles apart and fit into different categories.
I think because I haven't actually tried a 993, and have tried a griff, I need to get the feel of them. Mind you if they are built as well as my 944 then I will be pretty smitten. I know mine is pretty far down the ladder in terms of porsche ownership, but I love it, and must admit have always been a porsche fan despite what the general herd that follow the bandwagon thing....Thanks for the insight vs, I will look into it and maybe get a drive.

Down here cautiousness towards speed controls has reached such a level that flashing is now limited to warn other drivers of plod's presence. There has always been a relatively low number of Porsches on the roads so the first thing you may wonder when being flashed by some other porkerman is if you'll be going through a speedtrap within the next few miles.
I happily wave at all kind of eighties cars wether it's a now very rare R5 Alpine turbo or an Audi Coupé Quattro. I find those more "moving" than the usual 3.2 as there are much fewer left in unmolested, well-cared for original condition.

I've found the same thing with Civic Type-R's.
Own an Integra Type-R, and as there're <1,500 in the country, most owners flash or wave...very friendly, great feeling etc... With the Accord Type R, less so, but many owners still felt in something different, so waved/flashed if they recognised the ITR, or if flashed first
But with the CTR, and it's popularity, a lot of image-conscious numpties have bought them, who couldn't care less about Honda's heritage or the Type-R brand. And who give you funny looks if you flash them. So I've given up.
I'm guessing it's the same with Porkers, only more so - a very good sports car with an impeccable heritage, but has turned into a status symbol and consequently is one of the biggest examples of conspicuous consumption going.
On the plus side, saw a GT3RS on the M6 yesterday...boy do they stand out, lovely machines...last saw one at Donny...think it was overtaking me every 3rd lap!!!![](http://www.pistonheads.com/include/images/redface.gif)

Boxster owner here.
I flash at other Porsche all the time but rarely get a response. It is a pity to read all the posts above bascially saying that unless you drive a 993 down (or a TT/GT3) you are not a true Porsche owner. I have found a great way into a great marque at 27.
The problem is that Porsche are loosing their exclusivity (over production) which dilutes the die hards from the die hairdressers.
Cayanne owners are the worst IMHO.

I know what you mean where people get categorised due to their car.
I drive a busy commuter route each day, and see some truly awful driving where people are repeatedly overtaking dangerously only to arrive at the next roundabout a few cars in front

The vast majority of them however, do seem to drive Beemers - one of the key reasons I haven't bothered buying one.
Got to be careful what I say now though as my brother-in-law has just bought a very nice dark blue 318is!!

I always wave for non-mainstream Porsches e.g. other 996TT's, RS’s, 993's etc. Gratifyingly the majority reciprocate. Abundance of 996's and Boxsters driven by non-enthusiasts does not inspire me as much. The girlfriend just laughs when I do it and finds it “quite amusing” but I have noticed she now does it in her Nissan Figaro so certainly not just for Porsches !
I've only just started driving the 928 in daylight (long story) and so far have had the drivers of a 944 and a 993 wave and flash the lights.
I also had a lovely guards red 911 SC (I think) stop at the lights to have a chat with me.
But today I flashed and waved to the driver of a black 996 who completely blanked me and looked at me as if I was on another planet.

I find that flashing in urban environments and large cities is a waste of time (Too many Pcars, too much distraction to react in time, etc....).
On B roads and in the country side, I always flash and get mostly flashed back (Which is satisfying I have to say...).
PS London Irish, are you coming over Mondello for the Porsche track days ?
I find that most if not all 996 and boxter owners(who I never flash or wave at because there not real porsche's)
Never flash or wave back at you because as you say they have bought the car as a status symbol or the firm has boughtn it for them and they know nothing about the car;history and are not usually PCGB members so don't get what its like to want one of these cars for years and then be lucky enough to be able to buy one and drive it even though it costs you the kids shoe and coat money to run it.
I gave up waving cause you look such a prat when they just ignore you.
I did see a guy in an identical car to mine at a roundabout when I first got my car and we went round and round so we could both see the backs of each others cars...
sad sods arn't we but what other chance do you get to saee the back of a 911993 turbo bodied beaut????

Is inverted snobbery now the fashion on pistonheads, and can't we just judge people on their merits, not just appearances. I am a flash git with a SY 996C4S, having been through 964, 968, 993 in the past. Not only will I happily acknowledge owners of other "Pork" I have even been known to initiate a wave or flash at 924, 944, 968, etc etc. Interestingly I have been "blanked" by some of these as often as you have by 996's. Not everyone driving a newer Porsche is a total prat - unless that is judged by spending far too much time reading gassing station instead of working!
