I think Fuchs-wheeled 944's can't have ABS; the reason the offsets (and hence the wheel selection) changed for 87 was to be compatible with ABS. So as an 86 it won't be a factory 250 bhp 951 with it's bigger turbo but a chipped/modded 217 bhp car.

Hi there,

You guys really know your stuff! I thought the RUF 944 seemed dubious myself...

I am looking a low mileage (under 95k) 944 Turbo. What should I be paying for this? Does anyone have anything outstanding on sale?

Also, what do you guys think about 'chippinh' the engine?

I am here to learn!

Thanks, very helpful guide there.

I have been dying for a 944 for ages - the practical super car!

What do you reckon?

S2 or a Turbo?

If one was to chip an S2, would it be as quick as a Turbo?

Thanks again!

No.

I've owned both and the Turbo always felt miles faster - mainly because it had bags more torque. I had 152 out of the Turbo and 140 out of the S2. Iguana reckons you can wind the S2s up more, and there's maybe 10bhp extra in a chip, but I don't buy it. The Turbos really feel - and are - faster bits of kits (although the S2 would probably be quicker in the wet on a twisty road... the Turbo can be a bit lively).

Just my opinion. I'm sure there are a few S2 owners who've 'smoked' a Turbo in their time

I want a car that has bags of grin factor, its going to be used for weekends and long trips. I have a 650 Suzuki for commuting!

So grin for grin, sounds like its the Turbo for me!

I found a site that does nice bodykits, not cheap looking at all. jacuemond.com (strosek copies, I think)

Any takes on fitting wider arches to a 944? Perhaps its just a matter of taste...

Makes a great looking car into looking like a chav'd up piece of sh*te- well you did ask!

Ref S2 vs Turbo, I dont often say this but :shock horror: I do mainly agree with Dom on this, a chipped 250 turbo- which usually equals 300'ish'bhp all being well with wastegate etc, is a very differnt proposition to an S2, the midrange torque is properly agressive & genuinly 'feck me thats nippy' feel.

S2s are great & terific all rounders & no lag etc etc & has preferable characteristics for many drivers, but a chipped turbo is indeed a significant performance step on- my current 944T is just chipped which equaled 280bhp & then properly set up = 311bhp, so 100 more than an S2 & the same weight, so yes rather obviously a tad brisker but with LSD & huge wedge of torque is not as easy to drive flat out down on a typical b road as an S2, open road or track tho= way way quicker.

What sort of torque figures lb/ft do these standard & modded 944T achieve....just trying to get a perspective on huge wedge.

Iguana,
Just a quick question why does the LSD make them not so friendly on B roads?

Thanks

I quite like the strosek nose that had the tiny little projector headlights to do away with the pop ups, but other than that i have to agree with Ig, bodykits on 944's tend to look a bit "max power".

I suppose it'd be alright if you get some neons as well.

Having read all that I'm so glad I bought an S2. A comparative turbo would have been 'well used', clapped!
