Cars not selling?
Discussion
This makes me wonder if there will be an increase in business for those firms that are replacing engines with electric power trains eg the e-type etc.
In a few years time they will be lighter and smaller and more powerful and charge quicker etc etc, could the trend (or even an obligation in some areas...!) in 10+ years time be to put your 993 engine on the shelf and run the car electrically?

Cars all go down in value if you've been buying and selling cars privately over the last 30 years?I was pleasantly surprised on my last couple of air cooled with capital appreciation but thats certainly not the norm.
I've already spent £5k on some pretty run of the mill minor work on the 993 and haven't even driven her in anger yet. I expect I'll have to fork out significantly more over the next 3-5 years. I adjusted my offer for the car accordingly and still paid a few grand more than we thought the car was worth just to get the deal done. Inspect a car and if significant work is required adjust offer and agree a fair price. If you like the car and at inspection even if the chassis rails, scuttle, major service and suspension all need repair/replacement if underneath its a sound car no biggy just price into the offer.
I was certainly not going to wait 5 years to see what happens to the air cooled market when I found a car which suited me - get it bought! You only live once - best to make the most of it in my book as you never know whats around the corner.
Reading some of this just makes me want to roll over and put all four in the air!
I prefer to take a more positive view of the future. Possibly in 20 years time most cars will be electric or alternative propulsion of some kind. There's an awful lot of hurdles to overcome first before we can be sure which way this goes. However, wrt our beloved classics I'm guessing (hoping) there will be some kind of historic vehicle status which exempts them from many of the restrictions discussed above. We have a rolling road Tax exemption at present and looser MOT rules coming for historic vehicles so there is some recognition from the centre of the historic importance of these vehicles. Things can change of course. Eg it's disturbing how our freedom of speech and expression has eroded over the last 20 years as government becomes ever more controlling. How many of us saw that coming 20 years ago? On the current trajectory it's entirely possible we'll be living in a Marxist state where both freedom of movement and expression are viewed as quaint things of the past.
Maybe we should start defending the things/values we hold dear. Or lose it for good.

Plus it’s a positive thing- get pollution out of town centres and free up the roads a little.
The only time that driving in London is tolerable is between midnight and 5am due to the place being a permanent traffic jam the rest of the time. I can literally run faster than I can drive in London during the day.
Anything that begins to shift people out of cars can only make it better for those that choose to remain in them.
I’m never going to drive to work, but being able to drive through town without wanting to kill myself would be good.
If it costs £20 to take the 911 out then that’s fine with me.

I agree that there is far too much negativity on here. I think we will be driving our cars for a long time yet. First of all if their is a huge changeover to electric......where is the electricity going to come from! I also couldn't care less if I never have to take my car into a city again, I don't see that as a loss. As to values if I had bought a new golf gtd 5 years ago instead of a 993 ,what would the golf be worth today? If my 993 is worthless in 10 years time I will park it in the garden and enjoy looking at it.

I agree, however I was adding the potential for an exemption of historic vehicles. In 20 years the 993 will very much be a vintage car and it may be that following a blanket ban the curiosity value of such museum pieces will mean an exemption. Afterall I'm not talking about mass daily use here, merely a few people making a negligible environmental impact but adding a little colour too people's lives. stichill99 said:

He he, me too. The only way I'm parting with my 993 is if they confiscate the gas guzzling brute at gun point! Dammit said:

Holy moly, my mans math says this could be good value ???
Take an average C2 man coupe, for £40k .....address all known issues, upgrade suspension, rebuild & upgrade engine (to as good as it can be) and you would over the price of this.....

If you’ve spent £45k on a 993 in 27 months I’d seek therapy and get someone else to manage
your finances.
DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted.Still seems a lot of money though. I've spent a small fraction of that on my C4S in the last 3 years and that's with an OPC. And I'm not skimping. If it needs doing I do it.
Regulations, especially in London getting quite strict. I was not even paying attention but they were implementing the new bans quite fast. I almost got a fine recently, in Bank junction (no car allowed!).
Now they are planning to give a trial of new ban;

It is funny because (being a former city resident), just a 4-5 years ago, I used to drive in the city, with very minimum congestion charge (10p?). Now I would not be able to even drive during weekdays, or maybe even more? The rumour has, London will implement this rule on other highly wealthy areas such as Marylebone and Kensington. (Anyone remember the locals who was complaining about revving chaps?)..
If you are local londoner, and can't drive your classic -pork or non-pork- as you pelase, I guess the potential owners would drop eventually... What if they would start putting new regulations on smart motorways too such as no more non start/stop cars or older cars since they have no extra safety gadgets. I was driving to Cornwall a few weeks ago, I stopped counting old broken land rovers and jaguars on the way back..
