Dom, why don't you just put a sticky Q&A thread at the top of the porsche forum???

Surely a 964RS is the solution to everyones Porsche owning dilemma?

Q. Best looking Porsche ever?
A. = 964RS.

Q. Most alive Porsche for my money?
A. = 964RS

Q, Which Porsche is the least Gay and will give me the most respect from fellow Porsche enthusiasts even if I can't drive it properly and hot hatches make me look silly?
A. = 964RS

Q. Some say the Cayenne is the best off road Porsche...is this true?
A. A 964RS if often seen off road, especially in the home counties

If you think:

1) that I think a 964RS is the best looking Porsche ever, then you're wrong. I don't.

2) that I think it's the answer to everyone's Porsche buying dilemma, I don't. I'm happy recommending a Boxster S.

3) that I'm absurdly loyal to the 964RS, I'm not. I'm selling mine forthwith.

It's ludicrous for Rich to ask a question of 'what 20-30k Porsche' when he wants something exciting, for the 964RS never to be mentioned. It would be a crime if people shut up just because they'd get snide comments back.

I'm not even going to bother contributing to these threads in the future if all I get is some form of dull echo about Mercedes or badgers. Merry christmas to you too.

Dom, didn't you see the smiley????? All in jest, I thought you had sold the 964RS a long time ago anyhow?

It is all a bit predictable though on the 964Rs front...hence the inevitable reponse..

Have a great Xmas and new year mate

Absolutely likewise. Gotta have a laff ...

Of course you were right to raise the 964RS - but given the original list of possibles it was quite a change in approach (given that they are all lardy, slow and ponderous ... ).

Personally i just figured that since the guy (rich) knew his list already (930, 965, 993) he'd done his bit of research and narrowed it down to those.
964RS is a great car, no question, but it doesn't sound like Rich is a 964RS kinda guy.

More along these lines:

Alternatively, get a decent early 993 with loads of miles but good history, an RS body kit and a supercharger. All the 993 goodness, but earlier Turbo poke, lairy 2wd handling and great fun.

(you didn't say anything about depreciation though did you? never mind eh? )

993 C2 (I've seen a few with RS style rear wings and spoilers and things - i really want a car which looks 'purposeful'),
Pro's: I guess a totally different driving experience to an older 911 - more refined, easier on long journeys, more sedate?
I'd guess not as quick as a 930/964 turbo.
Con's: Potential for occasional big bills.
Depreciation.

Not so, had my first 993 C2 for 18 months and it didn't cost me a penny in depreciation. Just bought something which had big appeal on resale and it had reasonably low miles.

Agree with Ric, made £1k on my C4S after putting 22k miles on it in a year, then lost less than £1k on my 993C2 after putting 16k miles on it in 9 months...

If you want a 993GT2 ultimately and you hate depreciation, the best sub-30k car for you is a 964RS. Simple.

Or a 3.2 Club Sport as you still want a 911. Rarer the a 964RS, better road car, but admitedly not quite as quick on track.

Not that mine's for sale.

Ah sod it!

Get rid of the wife, buy the GT2.

There are a hell of a lot less good 993GT2's out there than good wives. And they don't depreciate - just look at her mum!

Re. the turbo's. The 930 is a classic, but a dog in stock form. Don't need to spend much on it to improve it leaps and bounds (new turbo, intercooler, headers, refresh various parts £5k would sort that lot out). The 964 Turbo is a lot better than the 930, too many reasons to list, some less obvious that others. The 3.3 964T is probably the better choice manly because RHD 3.6's trade at stupid premiums due to limitted numbers, and the engine is a bit of a botch job.

£2.5K - £4k on a 3.3 will get you a much lighter car with close to 400bhp (and around 430bhp on the 3.6)

Running cost are approx. 20% more due to accelerated wear rate, but they are not materially more expensive. If you buy a dog it will cost you as would any Porka.

A 964 Turbo (either 3.3 or 3.6) is much quicker than a 993C2. Top end may be similar but thats about it.

Stock they are a great road car part time track car. However, swap in a light weight interior and change the suspension and you will have a much better time on track.

Hi rich , you CAN get a LHD 964RS for mid 20's , it would be a bit like mine ie has history of being driven on track. The depreciation is not an issue , and to keep it in fine fettle you need a good independent with bosch hammer and a feel for setup. What you get is a race car for the road with minimalist creature comforts and plenty of mechanical whirrings ....pretty much how the brand was built. It has no wings skirts or go faster stripes , and the performance envelope won't cramp your style if you are prepared to lean on the ABS brakes and heave on the (non power assist) wheel.
