My wife’s got a Polo too, more than does the job.

Does take a while before you realise you don’t need to take everything, you can either make do or buy whatever your missing from a shop when you’re out.

I've already made it pretty clear that we won't be taking the kitchen sink out with us. I refuse to believe that you need 15 of everything.

Just managed to get our travel cot behind the rear seats.

I have 20 month old twins and they fit nicely in the back of the 993 (see below) but only if we are going out and dont need a pram. I couldn't take them out before they were 9 months old as they can only both go in the back and the seat had to be forward facing. I also have a Polo and all the gear fits in fine (including the buggy's). As what everyone else has said, keep the 911 for weekend blasts by yourself and as the kids get bigger, you will use it more as a family.

That slumped over the prince car seat is a familiar site, doesn't look at all comfortable. Glad I only had one though!

Once the nipper arrives , you'll find that your opinion goes low on the totem pole ... Fight it at your peril!!...

Keep the Porsche to maintain some sanity, but in my experience (we've got 10 month twins) forget the weekend hoons, you're just too sleep deprived and bloody busy. Sadly I'm only really using mine at present for the commute to work.

Then one of these for when you need lots of room when going on a longer break.
You are not suggesting he carries the baby in one of those, are you?

No the baby gets the best seat!

But you could put the wife in it.

Congratulations Adam - hope all goes well.

Mine is now 14 weeks old - plan is to sell the S3 and get a Jalopy for commuting and the 993 (hopefully) for some fun.

We got married in Nov last year and babys are now a hot topic. I got my 996 as forward planning thinking that I can keep it for ages as its got room in the back for the wee uns.

Thanks for all the tips, ill start scouring ebay for baby seats and prams!

SO pleased to see this thread, as we have our first arriving in August and I was on the brink of a 996 C2 purchase, but it would be only car and I would be busting the bank to do it, which doesn't seem like the best idea with a new one arriving and the wife not earning.

My plan at the moment is to keep the S2000 for fun and get a big heap to look after the little one. That way I can always upgrade one of them in the future e.g S2000. If I spend everything on an Audi S4 or something I can't see me ever getting the 911 and a run around to replace it.

Congrats by the way and glad to see people think kiddies are as much fun as 911's - I won't mind waiting to get one that way!

I think this must be the third most popular subject for a thread on the Porsche forum (after "M3 vs some 911 or other" and "How can I get my alloys re-furb'd" ).

I have a 993 (C2) and two small boys (nearly 3 and nearly 18 months and no I don't get a lot of sleep). Consequently I can't comment on the 996 situation or the C4 but anyway ...

As well as the 993 we have a Passat estate.

The Quinny Zapp will fit comfortably in the front of a 993, however, it is not really suitable for a newborn baby as it does not recline - 9 months and older is OK. It is btw a brilliant little buggy though - highly recommended.

The Quinny Zapp can also be used with a Maxi Cosi (rear facing) car seat which is suitable for a new born. But this introduces another problem in that the Maxi Cosi is not recommended for more than 2 hours at a time.

I could not fit the Maxi Cosi onto the back of the 993, though I'm told that if you fit the longer seat belt it will fit. I bet you'd have to put the front seat well forward, though. NB if you want to put in the front, you MUST disable the airbag.

We have two Porsche Prince seats and both boys now fit very happily in the back - the youngest in particular loves the high level brake light, which he can see from the back. These are officially suitable from 9 months and up, though I would say 12 and up is more realistic, as the baby needs to be able to sit up and hold its head up very comfortably.

Regarding having a small/sports car as your only car and "not taking much stuff" -

But seriously some things are a real problem - if you haven't taken a high chair or a cot because you can't fit it in the car, buying one is hardly going to be a solution.

Finally loading a baby into a car is actually quite an effort and 5 doors makes a huge difference. Before our second was born we had a 5-dr Mk 3 Golf GTi which was perfect. Two kids, however, and all bets were off ...

Dan

Edited to fix smiley/close bracket bug

Edited further to add: 911 vs small child? - small child any day of the week, it would start by dropping the keys down the nearest storm drain, and then vomit in the drivers footwell.

Well, I did it.

Just managed an ovenight stay with two kids in tow with a carefully packed C2.

Even managed my daughter's doll's toy travel cot, the 101 back-up nappies, and some Mother's Day presents.

Didn't even use the rear footwells.

It's a Mamas & Papas pro-tec car seat, it was about £130.

It's amazing what you can get behind the seats of a practical sports car

Or buy a 968 Sport instead . They are cheap as and chips , much fun , and you can get 2 kids in the back (mine are 2 and 4), a buggy, a bag, a picnic basket AND the boys bicycle in the boot! The rear seats are a little more roomy than the 993 too.

Any they are so rare that no-one actually know what your driving. I see several 911's every time I'm out for a spin. And a couple of 968's per year max.

p.s. If the 968 is not fast enough, it's about 5K to get it blown to 340BHP. It'll be fast enough then.

Must be something in the water!!

Our first is due in 8 weeks so I made sure i got the 996 purchase in first (bought in January) because I thought once the baby had arrived there would be NO persuading the Mrs. As it is she now loves the Porker so no chance of that going!

But as everyone says, you need another big car (especially if you have a dog AS WELL). We have an X-Trail and I'm not sure that is going to be big enough!?

My 21month is in a Porsche Prince and he lolls around a lot when he is a sleep. I have to brake early and take it easy around the bends. Haven't found a solution other than poking regularly to keep him a wake.

When out in the family car, the 5 point harness keeps him rock solid and we can almost anything without him moving.
