Having talked to quite a few people now - I think that I'll need to budget at least £2k per year, which for me , is a lot of money so I'm going to have to choose a car very carefully...

Remember that the Turbos versions are the most over engineered and generally the most reliable model of most of the ranges, just beware of any that may have been abused.
I've owned a 964 for 3.5years and averaging £700 per year maintenance on 7k pa, which according to everything you read is a miracle!!.
If you do your research and buy on history and condition and have it inspected then £2k/pa should be more than enough, barring some very bad luck and an engine rebuild.

A well-known pork specialist who posts on these forums has described the 993 Turbo 4 engine as made out of 'monkey metal' in comparison to the 965. Now think about that, 993 tt engines aren't made of plastic are they, it's a mighty fine car.

The G50 box is used in several high performance cars putting out as much or more torque than a modified 965, and the clutch doesn't have the problems that afflicted the NA car. Inside everything is well screwed together - that same T911 reviewer I mentioned earlier commented that it felt like the car was hewn from a single block of granite, nothing rattles or squeaks (usually). The whole package is tight and very reliable (usually).
In general terms, the 993 generation of 911 saved Porsche financially, to enable it to do so it was partly a bean counter's car not purely an engineer's car, and it began the reduction in over-engineering that has taken place since. The 965 is the last really over-engineered turbo.

I'd say it's totally car dependent not generation dependent, I've test driven two 993tt's one from an OPC and one at an indy and both had more problems - that a non-techie like me could spot - than my 965 has had. Some years will be oil service only for example, but adding it all up and dividing by whatever gives who-knows, I'd say about £800 a year tops as the average for my 965. Even an oil service plus a minor fix isn't that painful. Needless to say you're less likely to get near that if you're addicted to OPCs.
