This may be bollox, but would a knackered DME relay not do this? (speaking as someone who carries one around in the usual paranoid fashion but to date has not had a problem!)

yes it would.

can the OP pull the DME relay and smell it for us? a knackered relay has a distinctive pong.

Is this a wind up or how do I get the guy to pull the relay?

no, its not a wind up. the dme is a very likely culprit and a pooped relay will smell, telling you if its fried or not.

failing that, gently tapping it migh free up the sticking switch, and then try it again. if it makes any difference, its a good bet thats your culprit.

You are quite right this is bollox. The man clearly said the engine does not turn over. A faulty DME relay would have the engine spinning but not firing.

Update;

It's probably not the starter motor as the car won't 'jump start' (Assuming the imobiliser isn't gone completely gaga.)

He's put a new battery in with no success .. The alarm went off , he switched it off as you guys described with 'the little key' .. still no joy.

Is there anything special that needs to be done when changing battery , to ensure the imobiliser isn't doing it's thing and preventing the engine from starting anyway??

I recently had the immobiliser control box(Scorpion) on a Subaru go tits up. Only way to get the car started was to bypass the immobiliser. This can be done by an auto-electrician or the AA/RAC. Apparently this is not an uncommon call out.

If it's not that it's looking like the starter motor or earth strap to the starter motor.
