There are 2 downfalls though:
1. Your insurance may still classify this as an import - mine did when asked.
2. If its a young car but out of warranty and there is a problem, porsche GB will not offer a goodwill payment whereas on a UK sourced car they might (why should they, there was no profit in this car for them).

You are right there is no physical difference in the car, but it is still not a UK car.

The rip-off UK dealers love people like you spreading this stuff

Actually, thinking about it now, I didn't need RAC cover since the warranty came with European wide breakdown cover anyway, known as Porsche Assist. Why on earth would you be offered RAC cover when the Porsche recovery is included?

These were the answers I got when I was on the verge of buying a C16 from holland brand new. My insurance co (Norwich Union Direct) called the car an import no matter what I said and the 2nd answer was pretty much (in not quite so direct terms) the answer I got from Porsche Customer Services in reading. If you think its BS then I suggest you give em a ring and ask - if you get a different answer then ask them to put it in writing for the rest of us.

Interesting, NU direct didn't have a problem with mine when I told them I bought my UK car in Germany and it had C16 spec. That was in 2000 when buying cars abroad was much more popular than it is today due to exchange rates.

C16 is supplied for the UK whether it's an OPC or an individual....

Not strictly true unfortunately, there are sometimes (for whatever reason!) the odd specification variations with C16 imports, I have been told of one without top tint screen , another without air-con, early ones lacking full leather interior....

Hmmm. Does this mean that in addition to saving on the cost like for like by importing, you can also spec the car differently to normal UK spec while still getting a C16. i.e. allowing you to delete the 'mandatory option' £975 tracking system (with its associated annual subscription) that you must have if buying a 997 in the UK?

Try emailing one of the OPCs in Germany, they'll tell you if it's possible.

Is there a way to tell if a 996 was a UK build car? By looking at chassis number for example? If so, what does one look for?

Thanks

Not really, RHD are also for the following countries:

Japan
Australia
New Zealand
India
Malaysia
South Africa
Malta

Probably others that I'm not aware of.

However, if it has a C16 code, you'll be fine
