I had a V8 Vantage before the 996 and it was a great car but yes the paint/prep quality was shocking. Never heard of wiper issues but there were a few niggling issues. Fantastic looking and sounding car but the 996 is definitely more fun to drive!
I test drove a 4.3 V8V immediately before test driving a 997 C2 (Non S), I bought a 996. As you say, they are just so much better to drive, even if the Aston is much more of an event & so stunning!ooid said:
I know it's way beyond our poverty list here but there is a 2010 guards-red boxster 2.9 (36k on the clock) at 21000 GBP, Porsche Centre Aberdeen! with OPC warranty and Gen2 engine, I believe its bargain
I think that's pricey. But then it is a Porsche Approved used. They usually charge 3 - 4 thousand more than market. No link?ATM said:

really? I think it sounded alrite but again I was not looking at gen 2 market for a while. What is strange, I maybe saw 8-9 cars last year (997 gen1), and so many of them either engine rebuilts or suspicious past with a price tag of more than 24k http://locator.porsche.com/ipl-customer/ipl/detail...
(Hope the link works above)

I like that cracking colour both inside & out. The reason to supercharge is a flat torque curve & rapid throttle response without danger of pre-ignition or needing massive intercoolers.
Yes, but for ~40bhp, why bother with the extra expense / complexity / weight / borkfactor? Strange car.
That Cat D Box is giving me nightmares - could be all mine is worth! Fantastic value for someone that wants to keep one of these long term and really look after it / use as intended - you'd likely spend more in parts and labour to fully optimise it but you'd have a perfect car for under £5-6k shirley?
Considering a standard, 15+ y.o. 996 will put around 225-240 hp at the wheels, I think 340 wheel hp is pretty impressive, if it is true!
That wouldn't put it far off a 996 TT..
But why do you rebuild your engine at Hartech for £8'000 and then only drive drive it for 1'500 miles in 8 years?? That comes to less than 200 miles a year!! Something is not quite right, imho...
ETA:
For 996 dyno runs have a look here

Me too. IF the guy is being truthful, there's about £800 quids worth of stuff to do on that car, assuming you're spannering it yourself & say a bit of contingency for other bits & bobs, arms, bushes, top mounts etc. Could be a decent mini project that thing.Strange car.
