My wife blamed the Land Rover! It had a 'big lump of metal sticking out of it!' Apparently not a tow bar. She drew a picture which looked like some fence panels attached to a wheely bin so God only knows what caused it but it WAS NOT driver error...

The 996 might be the better daily, though few now are used as such.

We (996 owners included) all know a Boxster is the better sports car, and better "weekend" car.

Without doubt a bargain right now if you buy a sorted car, but buying one and fixing it up did not stack up vs a 996 for me - they cost the same to maintain, but going by previous history the 911 will always outstrip others in value (both depreciation or appreciation) over say 10 years.

However I did manage to buy my 996 at rock bottom a few years back, I may well be in a boxster today if I was looking simply because of the price of entry. I wanted to buy car in need of work, refresh everything (my labour is free) and then enjoy in a car like new for 5-10 years, rather than pay extra for a car that will wear out on me landing the same bills later in ownership when I might be minded to sell and not get the benefit.

Just picked up my 996 from the menders. Met a car trader there who told me they had a nice 986 for sale. Same colour scheme as my 996...

Lowish mileage 69000
Litronics
Seats not too shabby

Pics look nice and recent maintenance sounds good but it is - £8500

Do we? Why do almost all motoring journos prefer the 911 then?

Agree with most of your comments though.

Probably not brave enough to say anything negative about the legend which is the 911.

I was in a similar boat, I had the 986 last year but maintenance and parts, labour etc is the same as a 996 so wasn't working out. I managed to sell it for what I bought it for and got into a pretty well sorted 996. I do feel that the boxster was more of an event to drive in many ways, the handling and overall fun factor was certainly bigger.

Overall though i love both, if I had the room and a few extra quid I would have both for sure. Many don't like this 'style' of the 996 911 but for me this is what I lusted after growing up and was effectively the 911 that was for sale when I passed my test. I still remember Gone In 60 Seconds at the beginning and thought that one day I would love one of those!

Not sure about that. I much prefer my 996.1 to my dad's old 986 2.5. The power, noise, feel, looks.
Boxster S might be more appealing. But the non-S feels underpowered.

My OH is tempted to buy an early Boxster as a 2nd car for her, would probably replace my Clio 172 TBH & I'd keep my 996 so I'm not anti Boxster, hell I've never even driven one!

They feel quite similar - well I've not driven a 986 for almost 15 years - except for the weight swinging around at the back on the 996.

If you're over 6 foot then they are very cramped. The cabin is identical except the seat wont go as far back. You lose 3 or 4 clicks off the runner I'd say compared to a 996.

Porsche deliberately hamstrung the boxster to make them different to the 911. If they had given the 986 996 power, then 996 buyers would have been rightly questioning why they were buying the 911.

But on UK roads I think really the power difference 986S vs 996 is almost immaterial - the 996 is a little more challenging and hence rewarding when you get it right, but the boxster has more balance and maybe faster through the corners when accounting for the power deficit. But the 996 is a 911 if that matters (and it clearly does).

The 996 is more practical as a daily, metal roof, back seats, roof rack etc.

The 996 is still a bargain .... but the 986 is even more of a bargain now.

There is an entertaining video, comparing two old air-cooled to 986 2.5 and 996.1.

Partial service history, but well specced facelift 2.7. Litronics, 18" Sport Design rims, Boxster Red / extended leather, Bose.

MOT history suggests it has been well cared for. I quite like it for £4.4k

I'd be crying if I did, although I'm not sure if that'd be too far of market value.

On the face of it, it's a similar spec. Different exterior and interior colours, but I too have litronics and extended leather. 18" Turbo Twists, no Bose. Do have heated seats though.

But, clutch, DMF, suspension arms all round and front springs in the last 10k. Air con condensers and dryer fitted in the last two weeks and both air con pipes and 12k series carried out yesterday.

Wonder how the black 2.7 compares in terms of mechanicals / history.

His is facelift though. Jury is out on which i prefer. Cup holders are a must have when you dont have them like in my 996.

If the guy knew anything about these cars he'd mention some recent work surely. It looks lower than standard to me. What do you boys reckon?

Too many miles imho, if the engine did not have a refresh. I sold mine less than that last year (nearly 70k mileage).
