Still don't like it and agree that the 996 turbo looked better

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I don't like it, but that front valance with splitter integrated indicators and bulbous little excrescences for the fog lights does look rather over-stylised. The piccie on the germancarfans link is a better - since when was the petrol cap on the right hand side of the car? Was that the same on the 996? It's on the left hand side on my 993, I wonder why they changed it.

Petrol cap is on the right hand side of my 996. ie same side as the driver on a RHD car.

Probably some daft Euromorm that took consultants a few million €s of our money to propose, define, eat lunches, screw mistresses and so on prior to implementation.

nel, remember that whether a 993 was lhd or rhd, the releases for boot, engine lid, and fuel cap were always on the left hand side of the car... maybe with the 996 they figured put the filler on the right for RHD and on the left for LHD, so you get a nice short fuel flap release cable in either case?

Yeah but in the photo of the 997 the car is LHD, i.e. european, but with the filler on the RH side, so your theory don't float matie. Nice try, but I still think it's the fault of the EU!

What are all these porker haters doing on the forum dissing the latest turbo? Do the porker owners come to the Lotus or jap-import forums to rubbish your sewing machines

Sewing machines? I wouldn't exactly call a Tubi decatted 360M that...
Anybody say Hoover? Ah.. that'll be a 911 then

Seriously though guys.. just having a bit of fun. No harm intended. Rather like the 996TT.
Just a bit too quiet for me sadly.

Well, 911 engineered to drive and perform, 360 designed for sound and bling

I cant see it being a big seller on looks alone, maybe its just me but apart from one or two vents it looks the same as a C2.
The 997 is a beautifull car imo, power apart not much more to tell you where your xtra 40k has gone.
I think where going to have to wait for the panamerica to see some fresh ideas,a bit of a dissapointment for me.

I would never have called your car a sewing machine - my snidey little jibe was aimed at skint driver!

And yes I agree, if there is one aspect of my TT that is a let down it's the noise - those turbos are just too good at taking the energy out of the exhaust gases! But zis ist funktion over form mein herr, ze bosch approach to ze engineering.

I wasn't aware of a forum rule saying you must own/drive a car to form an opinion. Yeah, I drive an elise these days. It's noisy, underpowered, and brilliant. Until last month I drove an MR2, and for the 3 grand it cost me I probably got more smiles per pound than anyone could from a 911.

For the record, I'd love a porsche. I think they are great and I'd have one on my drive tomorrow if I could. It's just a shame that while their engineering department burn the midnight oil making miracles happen, the styling division work a 2 day week. My mum could spot the difference between an elise S1 and S2, or an MR2 Mk1, 2 or 3. She couldn't do that with any porker. And before you just say 'form over function' take a look at the VX220 and the elise - you can make the same car look different without changing much about what's underneath.

Nel - sorry. Didn't realize.

I hear what you're saying and there's no doubt the 996TT is an awesome piece of kit
Was pondering about a 996TT myself to replace the 360.
I just can't quite bring myself around to it - no offense to Porker owners.
Have owned a few cars (never a 911 tho) and the sense of occassion in the 360 every single time I open that door is imense. 3 years ownership, 50,000 miles and no real trouble apart from usual wear and tear. Who said F cars had to be garage queens?
Mine certainly isn't. Rain or shine she's out and about doin what she does best.. going round corners with poise and ballerina precision

Mind you, never have been in a 911 giving it some. Was always a boyhood dream car but when it came to the leap I went from TVRs to Fezza.
Oh well, one day. Perhaps one of you good Sirs could show me the pleasures of Porker ownership?? I'd gladly return the favour in the 360 - if you can bear it.

and BTW, sorry to hijack thread - was just interested in the 993TS v 996GT2 thread and got stuck here with you guys!

Lastly, we all enjoy so have a good weekend all

As you're an occasional VMAXer I'm gob smacked you haven't been out in a 911 being put through it's paces. Give me a shout next time you see me at Brunters.

DAZ

Edited to say I'll also have a word with MOD500 and DER, to get you out in a 993TT so you can see the differences.

Thanks Daz
Not been on here before and didn't mean to cause offense.. just jibing away.. lazy day in office and all that.

I'd appreciate a spin in a 911T. My best boy hood memory is of a German registered early 3.3T sitting in a car park in Denmark (My native country) I was only 15 I think but still recall that car..
BTW, for those of you that don't know - a 996TT on Danish numberplates is £300,000
(no wonder I'm keen on motas having come from that country)

Daz - what happened to you at BTaP ??

Anyone else fancy taking me out (in their 911T !) not for dinner ?
I'll happily recipricate..

I started earlier than most, pub lunch at 12.30, in the hotel bar by 2pm. A few hours earlier than the Cityboy Drinking Games Militia...... Left proceedings at about 1.15am barely capable of standing up due to a few special measure vodka redbulls in the preceeding hour.

Well, I couldn't tell the difference between Elise S1, S2, S99 or whatever yet I can tell the difference between any 911 that's made in the last 16 years. That's because you own a Lotus and I own a Porsche. I like the subtle visual changes Porsche make because if I keep my car for many years it doesn't look out of date after 3 years like most other manufacturers efforts. The engineering on a Porsche is fantastic compared to almost any other manufacturer around, even for the older models. Can't say that about most other car manufacturers.

I'm all for slow evolution, especially of a proven design and engineering. Revolutionary change justs dates what is already there and the revolution of today is an antique in 2-3 years time.

Indeed. Whatsmore, I'd argue that long term porker residuals are testimony to the value of this "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach.

Having said that, the one vehicle for which I'd really agree with skint driver is the Cayenne. I feel that they tried too hard to hang onto a 911 look to the nose and produced a dog's dinner. Still, if selling this bastard child allows funding of other activities I suppose that I shouldn't moan - rather admire the niche-filling acumen of the Porsche marketers.
