John Reeves wasn't it? Left a lap ticket in the car too for when the hire company got it back

Classic bit of parking at Aremberg there Ben. Looks like the armco escaped so probably wan't too trouser decorating for you. Previous corner would have been more 'exciting'

Dom - it *WAS* a crash from the previous corner and the armo *DIDN'T* escape!!! Doing 120 and turning in early at Swiss Cross caused the back to brake away, spin, BANG, bounce, bounce, bounce, mud, mud, mud, kitty litter... <swearing>

Fortunately the marshalls didn't realise that was the resting point from a f**k up at the previous corner either. Thus there was no Armco charge! Not only that but the driver convinced the marshalls to let him call his mate to tow him out, so no ADAC charge either.

PS. I had it all on video too - well up to the point it started to spin and I dropped the camera. The last thing you saw was my shoe, some mud splatters and could hear "FUUUUUUUUUCK"

Yep. They "charged him accordingly". Ouch!

I'm sure I saw a video from that crash on the net a while ago. Did you post it somewhere?

I crashed my 2.7 Hartge BMW Convertible at the Ring in 2003 - took about 20m of Armco with me at Hocheichen. I was insured fully comp with Direct Line at the time. Even though they excluded "de-restricted toll roads" in the policy I got paid out for the following:

1. Full agreed value of the car
2. 20m of triple height armco and 2 armco posts
3. Recovery from the Ring to the Bongard Compound
4. Storage for the car at Bongard's for 21 days
5. Repatriation of the car to the UK...

I argued successfully that the Ring was restricted - showed them pictures of Breidscheid and Dottinger Hoche. I also added a letter from Nurburgring GmBH stating that the Ring is a public road, governed by the StVO and that I was not racing at the time, but rather participating in a Tourist Drive. It was enough.

Did I take the p!ss? You bet... Did Direct Line load up my premium when I bough a Porsche afterwards? You bet... Do I still drive the Ring? 250 laps since last year and counting...

Interesting.

I never thought "derestricted" would hold out much and knew there must be someone out there who tested it.

I actually called my insurance company before the last trip to ask what it meant and despite being put on hold and them asking everyone else, they couldn't tell me but did assure me that if it was a public road then it would be covered.

Mind you, there are insurance companies that specifically state the word "Nurburgring" (even the AA have it in their breakdown policy exclusions) - that would be clear enough!

Rather nice picture of my chariot, Mr Pike!

Utterly undrivable in the wet I have to say with the race suspension and the fat R-compounds...

would be interested to know what take people have on the insurance wording "no cover whilst on a racetrack" technically the ring is a race track ?

given that you can't 'lap' during TF, that it is merely a convenient way to drive from nurburg to adenau and that it is simply a public road of some historical interest to classic race enthusiasts like us, subject to normal german road rules and publicly owned, i'd say the ring is no more a racetrack than the streets of monaco or lemans. ahem

No it's great fun when it's torrential....hardly anyone goes out on track then...just make sure you do your braking in a straight line...and as we did, give the 20+ cars from Scoobynet some stick for not driving in the rain as you pass in your 2wd lightweight pork
