Thought they only insured Horses

Seriously, they used to insure my fathers cars and surgeries etc as he is a Vet but they became really uncompetitive. I am amazed that they will insure a 24 year old on a 996.

Anyway good luck with your search..perhaps I'll see you on one of those "dot com millionaire" before 30 shows..

You live in a district 6 area which in insurance terms is the worst i live in district 1 area which they consider to be the best, Low Risk.

Similar things go for house insurance, That why i moved up north.

There are other factord they consider, how many cars in household Points on license, Area, Age. Are the main ones.

I also am a member of the institute of advanced motorists and have a advanced and ARDS License.

Steve,

I also live in Cumbria and have just sold my C4S. I travelled to Switzerland in it this summer just with my wife and we used all luggage space available with the back seats laid flat.

The C4S handled superbly on the Cumbrian roads, but I found it fairly uninvolving on public roads as it does too much for you. The ride was certainly not too harsh but you do get a lot of tyre noise. The sports exhaust is awesome. I had a Boxster S before and found this more interesting to drive.

I had problems with both vehicles some of which were never rectified. Problems included: seat base collapsing, discoloured paintwork, faulty fuel gauges (on both vehicles), jumping out of second gear under heavy breaking, incorrect software loaded into the dashboard computer, faulty roof mechanism.

Found the OPC and Porsche GB unsympathetic and unhelpful, including Mr Goss himself. This is why I have sold the vehicle.

Cheers for the info still researching the possible problems with them compared to others

Go on..... get the C4S and be done with it..... its the best buy you'll ever make.
I've had mine 9 months and 16K miles later have loved every minute of it..... including a trip to mid France for 7 days with wife and 2 offspring (9 and 6) in the back..... I figured if they were going to make me go to France, least I could do was to take 'em there in style...... and think of the possibilities of your personalised number plate.....!!

Steve... I have to say that my own experience of porsche salesman hasn't been good, but I like the cars & (generally) the service side makes up for the poor sales attitude, so don't be put off.

Kamal... The balance between ride comfort & handling will always be something of a compromise & if you want an excellent GT car the standard 996 set up is fine...it is a fantastic car. But if you want a more focused sports car then..it's not just me ALL the road testers (Autocar, Evo, Car etc.)agree that the sports suspension is a must. Yes it's firmer than standard, but not by that much & you GAIN more than you loose. Name me one sports car (rather than a GT) that has more compliant suspension..all these are firmer than a 996 on sports set up... M3,Evo,Sti,360,Noble,Tuscan, elise, etc etc.
I agree with you that you can't judge a set up with a test drive & have to live with a car for a while. Having lived with both set ups on a 996 over long periods on bumpy B roads I can say with 100% certainty that the 10mm sports suspension makes the 996 into a better drivers car(don't confuse this with the 30mm set up..ideal for track days but that IS harsh). Until you have lived with both cars you can't judge & you clearly haven't. You keep bringing the Boxter into the picture, but this is a another animal (& as your OPC salesman said better on standard settings) it is a mid engined soft top & is far better on it's standard set up as it doesn't pitch/roll or understeer as much as the standard 996 . But if we are talking Boxter the "S" comes as standard with uprated suspension over the 2.7/2.5, in a similar way to the C4S & Turbo come with the 10mm lowered set up as standard & the "S" is the better "drivers Boxter" .
1..For a slightly more uncomfortable ride you get FAR better body control..the car doesn't roll, float or pitch & feels all as one, making you feel more part of the action.
2.. It vastly reduces understeer.
3.. I still loved my 996 on the standard set up but didn't bond with it, I was less inclined to take it out for that Sunday blast.

Having said that if you live in London & don't ever push the car hard I agree 100% with you, go for the standard set up, save a few bucks & pamper that rear end a little more. BUT the 996 is a better "drivers car" sports car with 10mm set up.....FACT !

er...obviously...I must have done...

now where is the number for my OPC so that I can instruct them to oder a sports chassis for my car...life has been so misearbale without it....I cannot wait to improve my lap times around the Tesco car park...and those lads in Novas will so admire my car with its "sharked" 10mm drop.

Hmm...better tell them to order some new wheels for when I hit the first pothole as well.

I can't beleive that suspension lark is still going on?

Grant and myself seem to have had a similar view on suspension ever since i have been on the forum.I can relate to this type of porsche.

Kamal you have a completely different car a tiptronic that is used in town,,,,this is exactly how porsche have evolved and marketed the car, you can get a tip regular suspension car as a stylish option to an old model SL...totally horses for courses, and Porsche have worked this out...
Why not discuss cupholders or something, the subject probably has a more definitive solution than the ttre/suspension debate.

all the best for 2004

I am happy to take this critism from a someone who has traded up from a 996 to an RS...its a fair point..and proves the passion you put into motoring..

Me.. .yes..I am a soft petrolhead who does get quite excited at the prospect of cup holders (SAAB MAKE THE BEST) and am less interested in trading my car in for a Cahteram Superlight or an aeiral atom.

You are absloutely right about Porsche's marketing strategy...but as you will be aware, the market has taken to this philosophy and thank god they did or Porsche would not exist at all now. Porsches are unique as everyday supercars..that is their niche.

Still...have you heard of hopsacks and S&M (JUST KIDDING)

Kamal, please don't interpret my response as a criticism. Each to their own and there is no definitive answer.

as for Hopsacks & SnM, strictly for the weekend when i am not driving the car.

Buy My C4S you will love it I will throw in a porsche push chair. www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=17760&s=79

Seriously the C4S is a great all rounder until the kids get to large EVO rated it "the best normaly asperated 911 short of a GT3" . Regarding luggage space the spare tyre is a runflat in the front boot so for long trips ditch it get 25% more boot space and either keep a tyre weld ala GT2 or call porsche assistance that is why you have a warrenty. If you are serious and want a chat about running a C4S even if mine is not the one for you call and I would be delighted to answer any questions on living with a C4S

Bo
PS dont buy a C4S without the sports exhaust you will love the sound(yes mine has one)
