True. I'm thinking along the lines of a GT3 for later on, for the same exact reason. I was going to spend money upgrading a 993tt, but thought I will loose all the cash on extras come trade in time. Was a bit concerned over possible leaking turbo's, !st gear issues, 4wd system & clutch, and all that extra plumbing too. I like the idea of the minimal nature of a GT3 - none of the above to worry about with the same 0-100. Even better with the JZMachtech 400 upgrade too! (Exhaust/chip).Arggh, here I go again....

PAC: Chateau? Bordeaux? Just curious.... I'm off to France with a fellow 964RS owner and crowd of guys soon...

The RS will hop and skip on public roads. Don't treat it like a Scooby. It's too stiffly sprung. Also, your comment about ride quality mystifies me. After three years I have a fused coccyx.

Goodwood guys are a pain in the bum with noise testing. Mine has the Cup exhaust and came in at 98.5db at a recent noise test. They must have innacurate measuring equipment; plus a lot of cars are far noisier than the RS, but guess where the noisiest component is in a 911? Right where they sample noise.

Tip for noise testing: put your foot on the clutch. It's very noisy and close to the metering point, might help lose a few db. Also lie when they ask for what you max revs are! Finally, don't go to Goodwood, or go just the once for nostalgia's sake. I find much to criticise about their arrangements and little to enjoy compared to, say, Donington.

993RS is a great car and so is the GT3. They definitely have a better chassis than the 964RS. However, I believe that the 993RS engine is slightly less exciting to use, albeit more powerful - a bit dull and less responsive compared to the 964.

Ultimately, it's a question of excitement over speed. 993RS, and especially the GT3, are a quicker in most hands, but 964RS is magical in its' responsiveness and generall aura of 911-ness. Difficult to describe unless you've owned one. I suspect you'd "upgrade" to one of those two and find you'd gained some speed and some driving ease at the expense of some of the magic. I know of one owner that went 964RS->993->GT3 and back again to 964RS.

It's cheaper, too!

Mikey T - sorry, didn't spot the smiley! Joke taken...

Peter964RS - interesting stuff, especially as I was thinking about a RHD 993RS for about 36k in Polar Silver (but Category C repaired).

Don't get me wrong, 993RS is a great car. In some respects much, much better than the 964. The chassis is so much more forgiving IMHO; powerslides and oversteer tomfoolery far easier than with the 964. The latter is more snappy and knife-edge; oh-so-satisfying when you get it right, though!

Plus, you can go quicker with less effort in the 993, which is also important if you don't want to be shown up by the lesser Caterhams or even a (sharp indrawn breath) TVR.

In the hands of a better driver than I, the 964 is probably just as quick as the 993, but in "regular" hands I'm sure the 993 is less intimidating and more accessible.

But, so what? Speed is not as important as enjoyment, comfort of lesser value than responsiveness in this kind of car, and I reckon you'd enjoy the challenge of taming the 964RS over the blander (note: everything is relative) feel of the 993.

Peter964rs,
Are you the owner of a yellow RS, black wheels, big rear spoiler, had a bit a spin at Nurburg with Wheeltorque last year. If yes, you may remember me, I've got a Silver 964RS and was also at Nurburg and Spa with Wheeltorque.

Intersting your comments about your noise at Goodward, was this a static reading taken at .5 metre from the exhaust at approx 4000rpm. My RS also has a cup exhaust plus the undertray removed (yours wasn't at spa). I havn't managed to get a reading under 101 on my noise meter using all the tricks (hot engine, clutch in, build revs slowly). Managed to get onto to Bedford with a 101 limit, although I the suspect the guy doing the testing cut me some slack.

Yes, that's me. Didn't have the spoiler at the 'ring, hence lack of rear end grip, also dodgy tyres, which contributed to the accident! Much happier with Goodyear F1s even though they're not N rated; you can go sideways with (relative) ease. Ill be there this year too, possibly also Spa.

Noise testing is so erratic, isn't it? My last test was a "track day" at Bentwaters last weekend where a handheld noise meter was used at the exhaust exit. I had my foot on the clutch and held around 4500rpm. But I remember going to Goodwood once and being told I'd "just scraped in" under their noise limit, whatever it was on the day; apart from that, there were a number of reasons why I'd not want to go back.....
