Maida Vale was always exotic friendly when I lived there. I do recall one or two instances where alloys had been targetted though and some muppet parking.
Ahem..... smile

Wrong part of town for Waterloo but apparently there is an underground thingy that goes straight there? My stop is Warwick Avenue and they cheerily say hello in the newstand (in stantion) when they see me smile I got quizzed the other day as to why I was on the tube on a Tuesday! I replied 'Olympics' smile

It is a nice part of town and you are as likely to find a note on your car saying 'sorry' for a parking ding as you are to get problems. (I had a small issue and left a note on the windscreen of teh offending car - or so I though - young girl calls me 3 days later or so and apologises. I get a quote and it is just stupid so dont follow up; after all, its just a small scuff on one corner of teh bumper etc etc

As I say, parking dings are your biggest issue in most of LOndon; especially the nice parts!

Lots of good suggestions here, however, I think any nice area of London (I'm assuming you would want that anyway) will be safe enough to leave a 996 (is it a £10k Carrera or a £60k GT2?). The biggest worry won't be vandalism, it'll be poor parking by yummy mummys in 4x4s and other big cars they can't park and you won't really be able to escape that unless you have offroad parking (which will be house specific).

I was in the same position a couple of years ago and bought a flat in Woolwich Arsenal. About 25mins into town, secure underground CCTV parking and easy drive out of town (spits you out towards the Dartford crossing) or through the Blackwall tunnell and onto the M11 (not bad on a weekend). Suits me perfectly to be honest.

Would never leave a car on the street that I remotely cared for, irrespective of where it is.

My house in Eltham will be for sale shortly. 25 minutes on train to Waterloo, garage for 996 (my C4S is in there now), plus offstreet parking for 4 more cars, 15 minutes drive to Brands Hatch.
Excellent suggestion, A2 and A20 just minutes away, a multitude of train stations running to Waterloo, commutable by pedal bike, blackheath and Greenwich nearby, lots of easy access out to the country and back into town, nightlife a cab ride away to bromley, blackheath, beckenham etc depending on what you want, excellent value for money too, I have a flat there and have had the last ten years, worth a look, very under rated.
Yeah, Coldharbour, Middle Park, Progress and Kidbrooke estates all within easy reach. For those that don't know the area, think New Addington.
Greenwich council have had a wonderful scorched earth policy over the past 15 years for integrating the dregs of society into the area. If you can afford a house in somewhere like the top end of Court Rd or North Park where you can get the car well off the road and under lock and key or behind a high fence you'll be OK, other than that I'd think seriously about the area.

I'm in Court Road, as it happens............

North West.....Jubilee Line will have you to Waterloo in 20 mins.

That means St John's Wood, and parts of Hampstead, Belsize Park and Primrose Hill that are within a 10min walk of the Jubilee Line. A 996 would not attract any attention parked on the streets around those areas.

You can get to Heathrow in 35 mins be outside the M25 in 20 mins and the commute on a bike to Waterloo is very easy....you can even take in the Outer Circle of Regent's Park and do a few laps of that on the way home with everyone else that uses it as a cycle track if you want.

As for life it's got loads of great pubs and restaurants or you can be in the middle of the West End in 10 mins.

It's not cheap but that's because it's the best part of London....yes I am biased.....but that's because I live there wink
+1 and you have someone plenty of good Porsche specialists on your doorstep (Jaz/JZ Machtech etc)

Everybody parks their supercars in the street here and nothing ever happens.
Unless you have a 993 and it gets spotted by the mirror scrotes!

Clapham/Balham?
There's 2 997 convertibles, a C63 (albeit debadged), 2 Astons and a 360 that live in my immediate vicinity on the road. 6 mile cycle commute to the city, quick enough to get out of the city and Gatwick isn't too far away. Plenty of nice pubs and bars and 10 minutes by train into Waterloo when needed.
Likewise, 993 Turbo and other 996/997s, V8 Vantage, RS4s etc along with all the big SUVs in my vicinity in Clapham/Balham.

The area between Clapham common and Wandsworth Common, stretching down to Balham is quite residential and with no big council estates. Plenty of quiet streets to have nice cars parked on, while still being close to public transport, decent nightlife and the A3 out of London.

ETA - not to forget the quality/quantity of the fairer sex, particularly in Balham. smile

How times change. When I was living in Battersea and Camden in the 80s, Balham was the last place I would have looked for totty...

Another vote here. Had alsorts including a gallardo parked on the street over the last 10 years. I really would not be worried about a 996 - they are 2 a penny and plenty of newer/ more expensive metal around.

Yeah, wish i'd bought down here then.

That said, I would have been 8 years old in 1989 so a mortgage may have been somewhat difficult to arrange.

Sorry about digging up this thread again but, I just moved to Balham and I'm shopping for a 3.2 986, and my insurance quote comes out as £1800! 3y ncb, 8k business miles, £500 excess.

Up slightly from £500 in the west midlands.. And I haven't seen one gangster here since I moved in last week.

I may use a different home address because that is just ridiculous.

There are TWO 996's on my road also!

Biscuit,

I live in Eltham - and agree with all ^

I also used to Live in Twickenham (which is great for all things West out of London) and that's 35 minutes to Waterloo too.

What happens when you do put in a different address as a test? How much does it come down? It would be interesting to see how much it is the postcode causing it to be so high and how much is the business mileage.

I am out in Surbiton (KT6) and insure a 987S for £200 a year with full NCB, but limited to SD&P and 10k miles.

I would think the business miles are what is killing that. Mine is under 700, Garaged, <5000k miles a year, social only with ZERO no claims bonus - 3.8 C2s

£500 parking on the street in North London for a Cayman GTS until I sold it last year. I can't recall how many years no claims though. It was with Aviva.

I moved 400 metres down the road recently and my premium on my wife's old Renault went up by £200!

I had that a few years ago. I lived on the border of three different postcodes got quotes based on all of them to see how much difference it made. The most expensive was almost double the cost of the cheapest IIRC.
