I don't usually post links but this looks decent, 200MY narrow C4 manual (says auto), that's dual row IMSB & good liners territory even though I thought the 4 started 2001(?) Face lift bumper front bumper looks ok, easy swap back if required, (is it a 4S bumper?) nice colour, 100k and manual. Bin the wheels though...

I think cars like this are getting tempting to buy just to break for bits. If you need an engine rebuild then you can buy this engine and you get the rest of the car for a few grand. If you can sell off some bits then you get a cheap engine which has just been through Hartech at a cost of 9000. Cars like this are just too cheap - if you ask me.

Found an invoice for recent Pagid discs and pads from a specialist. No further info. New fluid too and they work well on road and the bit of track done so far, but yes the fronts get annoyingly dusty!

Likely to be DS2500s or are there other Pagids commonly used?

No. They are finished the same as from the factory, in the case of Porsche and some other marques, arguably better.


As long as you take the old cracked paint off the seats, and do all the processes they will look like brand new and act like new as well.

It will take you a day to do a car if you have never done it before, in the case of a Boxster or Cayman you can be done in 4-5 hours and then leave them to cure overnight.

I have performance friction I think from looking through the receipts in history file. Mine squeak a bit and are super super dusty.

DS2500 are ferodo, so definitely not them.

Pagid produce a full range from economy discs/pads you can buy on Eurocarparts to full racing-spec stuff. The price on the invoice would give you an idea at what end of that range they came from. Race-spec stuff tends to squeal like buggery on the road, so not likely to be that.

My comment was actually about the OE Textars, which I think are pretty damn good.

The ABS threshold was <0.8 leptons on "st" tyres. Am quite happy with the ones currently on the car.

OE pads are perfectly good in nearly all road situations. They do overheat under long consistent hard and repeated braking. I've melted the pad sensors and had the pads go off in Europe.

With many uprated pads there is no slot for a wear sensor.

Lots of good thoughts about the brakes, thank you all. You're right that the 986 requires more pedal force than most any modern car due to the servo and MC/piston sizing, but mine is poor in feel and travel as well as requiring excessive force compared to others I've driven. If it was firm, precise and responsive I wouldn't care how hard I had to tread on it - a good pedal should be a force response, not a displacement one!

Corrosion on the discs is an interesting point and I did plan to replace them when doing the pads, as they look a little tired. I forgot to mention that my car does have braided hoses already.

Consensus on pads is harder to come by! It's nice to hear that the OEM Textar are perfectly passable for road use. I may fit a set with new discs, see how the pedal ends up, and if satisfactory run them on track for an hour or so and see how they behave. If they aren't fading or wearing away too quickly, great. If so, I'll research further..

Good to know that the DS2500 and Brembo Sport have performed well for some of you. Dust isn't too big a problem as I've found my wheels (the broad five-spoke 18"s, I believe 996 Turbo?) very easy to keep clean. I can only find Performance Friction's race compounds when really, I'd like their very good Z-Rated. Where available, that's less than half the cost and much more roadable. Any other contenders to speak of?

That's interesting. I booked my car in for service with Zuffenhaus and mentioned the remote issue - they told me they can source and code a key for a total of £220, better than the £300+VAT the dealer was talking about but still a lot of dough.

Was yours the same - key functioning, buttons OK, but remote not talking to the car despite pairing attempts?

Zuffenhaus sounded excellent on the phone, by the way. I'll report back next week!

FWIW re: key, managed to buy a genuine head of eBay.de for my old 986, for around £120. My independent coded it for free. Adding on the cost of a blade, and getting it cut, the quote you have doesn't seem too unreasonable.

Coming back to the brakes - need to do the rears on mine. There's still meat on the pads, but the inner disc faces are corroded - probably due to it only doing 1,500 miles or so under the PO's 18 month tenure. Went with a slightly left-field choice of discs on the front from Meyle. Couldn't really find much info on these in the UK on any car. Some reports on stateside BMW forums. Very happy with them, in combination with Textar pads.

They're Meyle Platinum PD discs, or something like that. They have some sort of anti-corrosion coating and seem to fair better than the rears after being stood for a week or so. About £100 for a pair (986 S). Will use the same type on the rear when I get round to replacing them.

There are obviously many other options, but 2p from someone who's used the Meyle hardware.

The reality is you won't find many Boxster owners on PH who have modified their car or done any real upgrades to brakes. Stating the obvious but those who use the OE pads find them ok for the type of driving they do and the limits to which they use their car and others look for a bit more performance. You won't know how you drive your car compared to other users. There's no right or wrong answer.

McSam, you probably have an issue rather than it just being discs and pads. Maybe have a look at the vacuum at the servo end, with the engine running, remove the pipe on the servo and see if it's pulling a vacuum when you cover it with your hand.

Thanks all, good intel. Those Meyle discs sound good value. Brembo are £62 per front on Design911 and that's also much cheaper than I had expected. I also spied the Brembo HP2000 front pads for £114.

The pedal doesn't sink when stationary, and it doesn't have the softness I felt in my E36 when its booster was getting leaky so I'm not sure about a vacuum problem - but it's easy to check as you suggest and I can ask Zuffenhaus to pay particular attention to it when they drive it. I'm reasonably good at feeling a pedal but not an expert in these cars.

I've found the same with Boxster wisdom in general, edc - there's very little in between road-standard and full race cars, the latter of which I do know a few (horribly tempting) examples! I'll start building my own knowledge base smile

On another note, I'd cause to go down to Bristol from home in Stratford-upon-Avon yesterday. The Cotswolds route was thoroughly rewarding, especially on the way back in lower temperatures with less traffic. The car felt fantastic. Enough performance to be entertaining on fast sweeping sections, beautifully communicative and just bloody good fun. The only gripe is a real dislike for broken surfaces, something later cars seem far more adept at soaking up.

I was impressed with the cooling system. Regular overtaking, sticking to third and fourth on interesting bits of road, and ultimately hilly city driving in 31°C ambient with the air con at full chat. Only a couple of degrees' movement on the gauge in the worst cases. It turns out my engine bay fan works fine and the front left one, discovered inop in low mode when I was changing the condensers, works in high mode. Good to know for any journeys to the continent.

I used to drive my old 986 on track reasonably regularly and expiremented with OEM pads and then more track biased pads.

I found the OEM pads (I just used to buy Textar rather than "Porsche" pads) perfectly adequate for road and track BUT found that they wore/glazed very quickly on track (I'd get about 2 track days from a set). In terms of brake performance, I found that mine only really worked well once they had heated up a bit. I just used to stamp on them as soon as safe and then they were fine from that point on (I could make the tyres squeak on a warm road under braking) - The first stop was always a bit worrying though

Obviously, do your own research on pads. For 'fast road' stuff, am very happy with the Textars.

Once the suspension's been refreshed on mine, would like to get some driver tuition and some track time. My opinion may change then, in which case I'll investigate other options. In the interim though, whilst you're in the 'getting to know me' phase and need to replace worn out stuff, you won't go far wrong with them. They're cheap enough at circa £40 from Frazerpart, even as a stopgap, should you be contemplating something more exotic further down the line.

I have found D911 a bit hit and miss - i have had to chase them up for half my orders; been told stock showing as in stock was out of stock so unavailable and had to pay more as the price from their suppliers had gone up (bet I wouldn't have been given a discount if the supplier price reduced...) so I tend to look other places now.
