I would go onto https://www.design911.co.uk and price up the following front and rear....

Top mounts
Bearings
Bump stops
Dampers
Track control arms
Drop links.
I wouldn't! Design911 prices tend to be a little inflated and the same parts are usually cheaper elsewhere. I'm not knocking them but you are definitely paying a premium (even OPC tend to be cheaper).

Unless, you can see receipts for the work done on suspension or you can take it for a proper drive, spending £10k on a 986 could see it owing your £15k very quickly.
Yep, I've done just that spending £11k on a 986 6 years ago and then a further £7.5 k on sorting it!

Those dealer 986s are all several k too expensive unless they've had work done - and I'd wager they won't have...!
They have gad rads, condensers, suspension sorted as required. Full inspection & repair as required carried out by North Devon Porsche prior to sale
The ads describe them as serviced and note some additional work carried out which is a positive. But that doesn't mean there aren't other things required now or in the near future to have 17-20 year old Boxsters running and driving properly. Mine was 11 years old when purchased and it's needed most of the suspension renewing to get it handling and driving well. Plus corroded brake lines renewed and an exhaust back box replacement, window regulators, coil packs and a couple of other bits.

Tyres are a good point too. Mine is being sold very shortly - it's on Michelins with plenty of tread but they are now over 6 years old and even if they look ok they will be harder and less grippy than newer rubber.

So there might be some good cars there and the ads seem positive - I'm not trying to be negative about the dealer, apologies if it seemed that way - but anyone new to 986s should go in with their eyes open and be prepared to spend money on keeping one in good order.

Please give me a heads up if selling. I'm still hankering after one of these and I'd prefer to buy from a like minded enthusiast.

Lots of 986 will look and appear to drive fine with no clonks or knocks, no issues on the MOT. But in my experience I have changed the dampers and springs and arms/bushes on both my 986 now. The first was bought as a 58k 12 year old car and the second a 105k 9 year old car. Both times it made a big difference. There was no need as such to do it but to enjoy these cars as they were intended then you need a good chassis and suspension underneath you.

100% as above.

When I bought my high mileage 986 it had a totally clean MOT. No leaks, no knocks or bangs, and the odd droplink or coil spring etc that had been replaced as usual over its life.

Because of my previous experience with other cars, I still did a complete front to back overhaul.
Springs, dampers, droplink, top mounts, track rod ends, control arms, wishbones, gearbox and engine mounts, the full gamut.

The difference was remarkable. It was utterly superb.

Not sure if this quite falls into "poverty" category...but we took the plunge.

After much looking around, over probably 10years on & off we decided to ditch the 2017 Yaris Hybrid that Mrs CallMeLegend drives (about 2000miles a year) & get a decent car.

Bought from a specialist, the price was possibly a little toppy, but I have never seen a better condition after 17 year old car, no evidence of paint having been done, both boots looked like they had never been used.

The compromise was that Mrs could not get on with the manual, she is very petite & with the seat fully FWD her leg was hitting the dash panels, so it was a Tiptronic or nothing!!! I'll be honest, for what we want it for it's perfect. Relaxed in town & lovely on a run, she's no a speed freak so the few 10ths lost on the traffic light grand prix is meaningless.

Enjoy.....

I was walking round a car show in Skipton a couple of years back. I came across a car that was a very unusual metallic green. I asked the chap, politely “ what colour is that ?” The Pr!ck replied “green”. I could of punched him. He wasn’t even trying to be comical, just tried his best to make me feel like a tw@t. If you’re reading this by any chance, you know who you are..... PR!CK ! mad

03 is the penultimate year for the 986. Zenith was available for only a short run too around 2000.

Cobalt not listed as a 986 colour unless that’s just the U.S. Spec. confused

That is just an individual website. Did you click the part that shows the rest of the web page? Search for cobalt blue 986 and you will find lots of examples.

Mrs CML fell in love with the colour before she'd even driven it. I have to admit I was uncertain from the photo's, but it does look good. The Navy hood sets it off well too.
