I'm fairly sure what was meant is that road legislation prevents you being able to contact the tyre from the wing, so the mesh is fitted underneath the grilles to prevent that happening. That at least is my understanding...Edited by 993AL on Sunday 8th March 19:31

My original reply was to the posters who thought that the rear side vents could be removed on track.
