Downside could be cheap cats which disintegrate prematurely so you could end up paying twice or three times to get the same quality - this is only conjecture but probably worth asking what brand and model of cat your cheap deal is using ?
This ^^^^. I'd also add that nominally identical catalyser 'cans' from different manufacturers will flow very differently (with consequences for power/torque). You also need to look at the diameter of the cats being offered too. Too small and they will flow worse than the factory (600-cell?) cats. HJS seems to be the preferred make of aftermarket catalyser for many reputable tuners.
brand they use is American and the guy buys pallets of them from the state. They do not know name. Apparently, their main market is for catherams, apparently they make most sport cats for them... They are guaranteed 2 years.
Feel free to call them direct on 01233662225

Not knowing the first thing about cat convertors. As per the above link. What I take as the cat thats bolted to the rear of my 911, is just an outer cover with 2 cats somehow bolted within?
So the charge would be for removal from car, opening of outer cover, replacement of cat(s), reseal and refit?
You now have me worried of the quality of the replacements. I had no idea there were differences.
I'm surprised the company that buys pallets of them, have no idea of what make they are.

That advert seems to point at 20-44 USD per cat - that is surely the bottom end of the market, the top seems to be the HJS Motorsport units and the Emitec Motorsport ones and even these seem to vary in spec ie one "motorsport" unit is different to another "motorsport" unit..... it is a veritable minefield for us punters. What I take as the cat thats bolted to the rear of my 911, is just an outer cover with 2 cats somehow bolted within?

What is funny (looking at the "pallets from the US comment" is the "better" American Porsche tuners make big play that the cats they sell are "German made" so it doesn't bode particularly well for domestic USA cats although I would wager that they will originate from China like most cheap stuff now days.....
The link you provide is to a chinese manufacturer, right?
Anyway, plenty of nay sayers as usual on pistonheads but no one with real experience of this outfit?
I am surprised because plenty of 993 owners bought from them on 911uk.com. I would be curious to hear from people who have first hand experience from this shop rather than someone incline to bring them down without knowing the facts.
I am not defending them, I do not know them and it will be my first experience there. The research I have done so far is positive and they seem to have a professional approach when I talk to them.
I am sure there are plenty of reputable exhaust manufacturers in the US and people over here buy from them.
My view is that if I get it wrong with them, I either put my straight pipe back on or the original cat. The cost is not astronomical. I am not even sure that by paying double elsewhere I will get double quality...

Fair point, not exactly expensive! I got mine as part of a very expensive tuning package where the gains were all measured etc, also came direct from a large tuning/ exhaust place who provided all the spec and performance gains.
6 yrs later they still fly through the mot and dyno what was promised etc......... But not cheap. You should go for it its only a few hunner bucks

How am I "bringing them down without knowing the facts" FFS - I am giving you some information so YOU, who is proposing a group buy, can find out and offer some facts and make sure it is an "excellent deal"
They may be perfectly good cats, I just showed the Chinese link to illustrate just how cheap "100 cell" cats can be bought - sorry for trying to educate, you buy what you want.

I called and asked questions subsequent to your post. The chap simply told me they were unbranded. He did not try to oversell them and said they were extremely popular in motorsport circles.
I was one of the guys on 911uk with a 993 that had 200 cell cats fitted. What I can say is that the result appears to be great, marginally better power and much better noise.
As for the quality of the cats, I believe that Powerspeed use decent quality ones, give them a ring, they are a great bunch and happy to talk to you about it if you've got any concerns.
