Sure you're just joking

In days gone by, those of us who wanted a high performance vehicle, were in the minority, and as such were 'prepared to suffer' for the joy...

it was almost part of the fun, drivinng in a gokart, because you KNEW WHY you were IN a gokart..

nowadays, with 500bhp cars as common as metros, we are expecting alot more for our bang.. we realised that we dont NEED to accept the stripped bare basic interiors.

Hell, look at a new Elise compared to a Mk1.. even thats got some creature comforts now!

If your oldskool, then I am sure the interior itself carries a certain ... pleasure.. whereas the newer school, want the power and the luxury.

maybe

secondly, can people stop going on about the 'spirit' of the 911 and models dating back to the 11th century as if they're in any way better than the 996. they;re not. give it up. in the same way the 997 is likely to be a better car all round than the 996, so the 996 is better - model for model - than its equivalent predecessor.

and yes i am a philistine.

Philistine indeed ! if it was not for the 'spirit" of the 911 the 996 might as well be mid engined and resembling every other sports car. Its because of the history that they are the way they are ..

I've just sold my 99 model 996 C4. It was alright, but to be honest my old 993 C2 was a much more enjoyable car.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that only a 996 C2 facelift with sports exhaust or a GT3 is more fun than an old 993...

(Turbos excepted)

And a 993 RS 3.8 is probably the ultimate Porsche for driving fun, latest GT3 RS probably excepted.

I have yet to drive a GT3-RS but the GT3 Mk2 I drove around Donington is arguably LESS FUN on a track than a 964RS.

It may be the 'better car' technically but it doesn't give you a wider grin. And I'm sure a 968CS with M030 could give it a run for the money in the fun stakes.

If you want fun and character/charisma out of a car, not cupholders, the older 911s may - in some cases - be at an advantage.

I have even heard reports that a GT3-RS owner is thinking of switching back to his 993RS. So I'm not expecting that to be the holy grail to put 996s top of the driver's Porsche tree.

And Paul (Burzel) - who could probably afford any Porsche on the planet - made reference to knocking the idea of a Carrera GT on the head in a previous post. His current steed of choice? A 993 RS that's been breathed on by the engine tuning gods (oh, and some bloke called Colin)

talking of carrera gt's, i was in afn in reading today (i have a few niggles on my week old 996c4s - i'm sure you air cooled nerds will love that), and low and behold there was such a gt being fired up for lord march (the goodwood bloke i understand). paid the paltry sum of £325k and allegedly has already been offered £1m for it.

glad to see my earlier comments ignited some passion!

Everyone knows my passion for the eradication of all badgers and cupholders from the planet. But you 996 chaps simply must be told the truth, rather than believing this water cooled nonsense that Porsche feed you. You'll be buying a Cayenne next

Sorry to hear about your niggles. I promise not to smirk much.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Gentlemen, having one, if not the, most inspired, genius interiors of any motor vehicle created or yet to be created for a long time to come, I feel for you I really do.

I dont even have a dashboard

Dashboard. Dash-board. Even the word seems old, outdated and so last millenium.

that monstrosity of a division 2 footballers car on your profile 'swilly' is the height of automotive vulgarity. it looks like a design students doodle that should never have made it passed the scrap of paper he doodled it on in a desperate measure to pass his micky mouse 'poly-versity' degree...

you should not be allowed to offer an opinion on this fine forum until you have a car made from a different material to a boats hull...

I dunno. Swilly's car looks quite mean in grey. Kind of like a big metallic woodlouse

Ahhh Mr 911Nutter, you have hit the proverbail nail on its head.

The TVR is the subject of an individuals passion at the peak of their unbridled design imagination thrashed on to paper and into production without a hint of corporate censure, accountants red pen, or focus-group appraisal.

Thus every TVR has the magic that accompanies most concept cars, but which, alas never reach the road.

The 911, by contrast, and whilst a fine car, is the product of 30 years of grey men's lack of imagination.

swilly..... if the design of your big metallic woodlouse (as has been so accurately described) lasts 40 years like the 911 has, then i will eat my words. the test of true brilliance in design is its ability to be timeless.... i fear your car may be viewed with the same 'but why?' comments people currently use for most aspects designs / fashions etc of the 1970's. s'pose you wear crusched velvet suits too.

In 40 years time the woodlouse will still look ahead of its time, and people will still go "gwooarrrrrr look at that....its a ferrari"

As for timelessness, the 996 is a bit larger around the hips, and carrying more weight around the waste than the first 911 models.
In another 40 years time, it may find itself bed-bound.

Ahhhh - TVR - the glue-sniffer's dream. No wonder their drivers go around looking as though they're stoned.

As a 993-owner, I made the decision despite being offered a similarly priced 996 - there's really no other choice than the air-cooled cars if you're a 911-Porscheholic. If you want a water-pumper, go buy a 928 or 944! A fraction of the price and three times the fun!

And I thought this thread was all about some poor chap's concern about the interior of a 993 - if that's all he's got to worry about, what's his problem. The 993's interior is purpose-built for looking out of, not for lounging around in.

In response to interior improvements on a 993. I had a LHD car that was originally owned by the factory. The interior was amazing as eveything (and I mean everything was covered in leather). All switches, heater controls, indicators, roof lining etc etc. There was not one sign of plastic. It was amazing. The process requires that the leather is "thinnned down" to make it 10th of standard thickness and then carefully applied by stretching. Most Porsche garages etc who saw it could not believe it. To cap it all it was in flamenco red. As one person put it-" so this is who it would feel being sat in a vagina" another said "was the previous owner of this car called lusefur"

I have recently sold a 996 and was very happy with the interior and having seen spy pics of the new 997 interior, feel a bit disappointed as it looks very "ordinary"

My wife is thinking of getting a 993, so we had a look at our first one today, not what she was looking for as it turned out to be LHD.

The thing that struck me tho' was how agricultural the interior is.

Can anything be done about this?

(I believe the 996's are better but would still prefer to point the wife at a 993 if poss.)

Brian

Brian, try getting Mrs V to look beyond the purely visual. Form follows function in the 993 cockpit and everything is actually extremely logical and easy to use

Just to bring it back to the 993 interior, its simply about quality and not quantity.A 993 interior is agriculteral!,may be go to a john deer showroom and buy a tractor then!
All cars have some small niggles, but i thought porsche ownership was about ,engineering perfection, and driving perfection etc
And as to bringing in a tvr to the discussion, what ever next, they are c--p!The only people pleased to see them are the recovery industry, who,s shares have rocketed since the re berth of such cars.
As to the the lord with his gt,he should sell it for a cool million. And go and pick another car up,they have still not sold all the allocated production yet.
