RE: Ruf RK Coupé
Discussion
Talk about missing the point.
You've got 140K to spend on a car; you want to be different, but still mighty fast. You buy this. When you're spending 140K it's a buy with the heart not of the head.
Its purchase someone will make who has 5 cars in the garage already and will only be driven a few times a year or when the owner wants to make an impression on his rich friends etc.
It’s a bespoke car, a rare thing.

What a load of tripe, it's a really gay car and all your friends must be gay if you try and impress them with this.
Youve got 140k to spend on car, then buy something that doesnt look like an overturned crab shell!
For me the point is you have spent the best part of 90k turning an already great car into something better. If you want something to turn heads and sit in the garage get a super car, not a budget sports that has been breathed on by RUF.
It's like having a buying a bedsit with a bang & olufsen home cinema. Its great but you might have thought more about where you spent your cash

Driving it on country roads with a few fun corners, and some interview with Alois Ruf - video is in German though so I couldn't pick up much of what he was saying. Refers to the Porsche 904 GTS and Ferrari Dino as design influences I think at one stage...

I love what RUF do with Porsche cars, but this project seem a waste of money to me. Just get a Porsche 911 Turbo.
I think that misses the point. This car is designed for people with the money to burn, who want to stand out from the crowd instead of buying something mass-produced.
I think it looks gorgeous, and I'm working out what body parts to sell so i can buy one

lol, got out of the wrong side of bed did we?
What's with the gay ref, don't knock it until you've tried it.
You must be a real man to drive a TVR

Presumably you can get Ruf to build you a car with the uprated oily bits and keep the std. body?
Good question - a large chunk of that extra cost must be on the bodywork. For those who aren't so concerned about near-unique looks, but do want serious power and the sublime handling which (I imagine) the Cayman S offers, an engine-only RUF package would be quite appealing. Oli.

Hmm. Would have to disagree about the pricing.
Yes, the bodywork will be expensive, but RUF are more than just a German Halfrauds, so I would imagine the vast majority of the money goes towards making sure that the exquisite chassis is complemented with suspension, brakes and the engine to match. A complete package..

Sure, and when I ask about the price of the engine I am referring to the suspension, brakes and whatnot as well. But if (as the article says) over 400 man-hours goes into the bodywork, that will cost a fair chunk - and for those who see smart and unusual bodywork as merely cosmetic, it is a fair chunk to be saved. Point taken, but I've always thought that most RUF changes were function over form. This thing is too gorgeous to be purely utilitarian, but doesnt the (factory fit)GT3 bodykit only affect stability over 130mph? But yes, 400 man-hours is going to cost a bundle. While I might begrudge £140K for his, £215k for the RT12 seems positively benevolent of Alois...

Not to knock it but for £140k can you really go for an overpriced modded Cayman over the following?
997 GT3 RS
997 Turbo
996 GT2
996 Ruf R Turbo
993 GT2
Good point, but I think that the point of the RUF Cayman is that it is NOT a 911, and also has the better balance of the Cayman drivechain layout (namely, not the 911 all-the-weight-in-the-boot characteristics.) It will probably appeal to the odd-ball more, on account of the fact that everyone wants a 911, and to popularise is to debase. Kind of like Bristol cars (which I also very much like.) 997 GT3 RS
997 Turbo
996 GT2
996 Ruf R Turbo
993 GT2
